I started eating liverwurst sandwiches on board an ore hauler on the Great Lakes in 1967. The third mate in the galley one evening taught me thus: First toast your white bread, Secondly, butter the toast ("you never eat toast without butter" he said), Thirdly, smear on your mayonnaise overtop the buttered toast, Next add on a ring or more of red onion followed by slices of liverwurst. The butter/mayo combination with the liverwurst and onion is an unbeatable flavor unique to this sandwich. A side note: I always mix in about a quarter cup of lemon juice into the jar of mayonnaise to give the mayo a tangy taste. Pour the lemon juice on top, seal the jar tightly and shake the hell out of it! So good! I use Duke's mayonnaise these days.
I like a bit of brown mustard and the old Arbys Horsey sauce on it. When I go to Arbys I take a bit more Horsey sauce than I should I guess. Its good on this sandwich though try it William.
Why the american liverwurst looks so chemical Red? Never seen this before in germany, and why he eat like it were pieces of meat? U put in on the bread like the butter, or Not?
I'm soooo glad my parents introduced me to liverwurst as a child, it is both nostalgic and so tasty and rich. As an adult, I would probably hate it just because of the texture or the fact it's liver. But for real, whenever I'm feeling depressed, I go to the store and pick me up some liverwurst and Dr pepper.
Great video! My dad makes his exactly like this, I personally like mine with onion, mayo, swiss, and just a little German ground mustard on toasted Pane bread. If you're feeling daring, try substituting the mayo for horseradish sauce sometime, it's a real treat. I started eating Liverwurst a few years ago, I was unaware it existed and how insanely nutritious & tasty it is, well besides the saturated fat, but who cares..we are men!
I love my liverwurst on dark rye bread with mustard and a half-sour pickle and cole-slaw on the side....A bottle of ice cold Miller Hi-Life beer too...Yummy.....
Way to much liverwurst on bread wtf. I can make like 5 sandwhiches with a pound maybe more. You can spread it even with none toasted white bread, I literary just made 2 with 8 ounces of liverwurst.
This is beautiful! Never tried it with onions but will soon. My grandfather would give me liver wurst in the eighties and I have bought it ever since I was old enough to start going to the store and buying my own stuff. I love this recipe but I can probly make about 8-10 sandwiches with a pound lol

So I took one of your commenters suggestions and I added some pickle and cheddar cheese. I had it on toasted sour dough. Not bad. Not too bad at all with a side of pretzels added lol. The texture reminded me of spam and definitely had that liver flavor. Thanks for making such a great video and convincing me to try something new. 👍🏻 Looking forward to future videos. 😊
Great stuff, I put a slab of limburger cheese on mine. Sad it's hard to find in my area anymore. Many a day I've sat for lunch in the woods while logging, eating liverworst onion and limburger cheese sandwiches. Now that's fine dinning.
Dad used to always add provolone and cheddar to his liver's worth or braunschweiger sandwich absolutely love it but where I live right now they don't sell it
These were a staple of my young years "68-74 where my dad would make these by mixing the Braunschweiger with mayo. (I love X Mayo -must be Hellmans-on any sandwich!) It was a different brand back then, seemed maybe Oscar Meyer in a smaller roll. Prior to watching your video, I picked up a roll of this same John Morrell and with a couple of experiments unfortunately it didn't spark my memories as a favorite. I had many Bologna and Cheese sandwiches back in that time and still love them made the same way (XXMayo on soft white, 2-3 slices bologna, and 2 slices American cheese) but now only with OM Beef Bologna, The cheap stuff doesn't cut it, no flavor. This my friend is still heaven to me , except that the package of OM Beef Bologna is over $5 bucks now!
Nicely done Sir! Reminds me of the sandwich I made years ago. Almost identical. I sort of got away from it. Sometimes I'd add a slice of American or another kind of cheese and mustard. We used Helman's or Duke's mayo. I'm in the process of making my own liverwurst thus how I found my way here.

This looks great for the heart. Never ate one of these. Been dabbling back into bologna after being gone from it for most of my adult life. Now I gotta find some good liverwurst with onion.
Wheat bread is better for you. We used to do the same thing then my mom started buying wheat bread. I thought it sucked at first but after a while I found out it tasted better.
I haven't had any in many, many years. Just bought a package today, of the same brand. I may make one tonight. I just wanted to see if i was making it right from a long time ago. Will do, but no onions for me!

It grows on you,becomes addictive.I love it on a toasted onion bagel,topped with pickle,onion and caraway seed.Just don't try kissing your significant other after,unless you plan to dump them anyway.
You never, ever want to put mayonnaise on a liverwurst sandwich, and, my God never on white bread; that's revolting! And, you don't make it with hockey puck liverwurst and onion slices. A good braunschweiger is spread heavily with a knife on a German hard-crust bread with mustard and a good helping of raw onion rings. It is then complemented with a cold bottle of Mexican Negra Modelo ale.
