How to Make Tom and Jerry - the Homemade Christmas Brandy & Rum Punch (Alternative to Eggnog)

This Christmas cocktail is a delicious alternative to the usual holiday punch like Eggnog. Tom & Jerry is a hot drink with complex winter spices that's not advocaat or a sweet chai latte or Mexican hot chocolate but somewhere in between. However, it's so richly flavored that it's easy to forget it's got booze in it.
Tom and Jerry is a recipe from the 1800's. There are references to the drink in print before Jerry Thomas' How to Mix Drinks, but Thomas was the first one to write up a recipe for it (that we know of). Tom and Jerry used to be a staple of Christmas parties and dinners, however, like a lot of classic cocktails, it began to fade into obscurity in the later decades of the 20th century. People had porcelain punch bowl and mug sets specifically for serving this drink, which means for 11 months out of the year, they'd store it in a cabinet just so they'd have something in which to serve their favorite punch in December.
This recipe is a descendant of Thomas' recipe. His is three times as large and non-specific about the quantity of sugar. This recipe is much closer to the 12 Bottle Bar recipe. It uses the 12 Bottle Bar proportions. The only real difference is that this recipe uses rum in the batter (as the Thomas' recipe specified).
In the original recipe, Jerry Thomas makes the concession that this drink can also be made solely with brandy. I certainly prefer the version with both rum and brandy, but if you only have brandy on hand, you can still make Tom and Jerry. Just sub in brandy every time it calls for rum.
Despite all appearances, the drink is pretty easy to make. There are a lot of steps to make the batter, but it's easier than you'd think. Like in making Advocaat ( • How to Make Advocaat -... ), you need to separate the yolks from the egg whites. Then you whip them, mix in the spices and put them back together.
Tom and Jerry is a great hot punch. It's sure to be a crowd pleaser. The only caution is that with warm mug of spices and booze, you better be prepared to fall asleep on the couch. Cheers!
Recipe:
half a mug full of Tom and Jerry Batter
0.5 oz Brandy
0.5 oz Rum
top Boiling Water (optionally hot milk)
garnish Nutmeg
Fill your mug half way with Batter. Add Rum and Brandy. Stir. Add boiling water. Stir. Garnish with Nutmeg.
Batter Recipe:
4 Eggs
1 oz Rum
.25 tsp ground Allspice
.25 tsp ground Cinnamon
.25 tsp ground Cloves
0.75 Cup Sugar
pinch Cream of Tartar (optional)
Separate eggs. Put the whites in one bowl, yolks in another.
Beat the yolks until thin. Stir the rum, sugar, allspice, cinnamon, cloves into the yolks.
Add cream of tartar to the egg whites (this is optional). Whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Fold the whites into the yolks until fully mixed.
Yield: 8 Servings

Years ago, I was the member of a Moose Lodge in the suburbs of Chicago. Every Thanksgiving and Christmas morning, they would make Tom & Jerry's in large batches, dispensing them from a 100-cup coffee pot. #FondMemories

Tried this tonight, loved it! I am going to try another batch with 1/2 cup sugar, and just a little bit less clove. This is my new favorite winter drink!

This is a very popular drink during the holidays in north eastern wisconsin. I’d call it hyper regional. We buy our Mrs. Bowen’s Tom & Jerry batter pre-made and I use 2 tablespoons along with 1 oz brandy and 1 oz dark Jamaican rum (Coruba) plus a some OFTD to punch it up. Top with freshly grated nutmeg and enjoy. I need to try this batter recipe out!

I've never done the froth mix using the egg yolks at all before! I'm going to try it because it looks absolutely, simply decadent! I will though continue to use an electric mixer as it makes your froth so much firmer and stiff. Plus, I want to enjoy the visit with my friends and family rather than extra time working in the kitchen!💞💖🎄🍷🥂🍺☕ Another tip that I actually remember from home-ec in high school a gazillion years ago (🤣🤣🤣) put your stainless or glass mixing bowl in the freezer before whipping up your egg whites, nice firm peaks! The "Tom and Jerry" drink I had read, was named after the principal characters in this old English novel called, "Life in London". The characters in question were named, "Jerry Hawthorne, Esq. and his elegant friend, Corinthian Tom."

It may have. That part isn't clear. The drink had long been associated with Jerry Thomas, but there were accounts of it in America right before he was born. Who knows? I don't know if it's been definitively determined where the name or the drink comes from.

As much as I want to try this recipe, the Advocaat that I made last year with your help was such a hit that it would be hard not to make it again. I think I'll do a double batch this year. Damn, that's a lot of eggs.

+gravylookout Haha. Yeah and you'll have plenty of egg whites left over. Glad you liked it. Advocaat is definitely thicker. It's a little also sweeter and served cold. I think you'll dig Tom and Jerry, but if your guests are demanding Advocaat, it'd be best not to disappoint them.

I like giving a little background (which usually includes a justification as to why I changed something or used a different ingredient) and showing all the steps in first person, so it's easy to see and do at home. Whatever you decide to do, make sure it's fun for you. That's the important part. It's not worth it if you don't enjoy it.

Okay did not know about this one? Is it unique to a certain part of country? I never heard of it. We have always made eggnog from scratch and it is similar to the T&J.

Do it! It's really good. I think you'll be able to make it work, but rum and/or brandy will be the best. Those spirits are a little sweeter than bourbon, which pairs better with the baking spices.

+Distinguished Spirits I tried it not too long ago! I tried it two ways -- hot milk and hot coffee. Hot milk was great and made for a great, light alternative to eggnog. Very creamy. With the hot coffee, the flavors off all the spices plus the rum & brandy gave the drink a good omph. It tasted like it had more kick that the amount of booze that was actually in the drink. Its better to whisk side to side to whip the eggs. By far the fastest method because of the shearing back and fourth.
