GREAT ADVICE from a serious PRO. Did this to a Telecaster with maple neck and now feels and plays MUCH better. BTW: Looks-wise you can barely tell it's a tiny bit less shiny than the glossy bits. Grazie Frudua!

To everyone complaining about the speed vs musicality issue: some people, including myself, simply prefer the feel of a satin neck (or whole guitar). It's a lot softer to the touch and it definitely plays faster, even though I'm not a shredder by any means.

@themodernguitarist

Terrance Hill I can. People here don't seem to realize that, even with a lighter grip, a sweaty hand will still be sticky on a glossy guitar neck. I did this mod to several of my guitars (that I don't plan to resell) and it improved the playability and feel drastically. It felt tons, tons smoother and felt a lot faster. That's one of the reasons why people go fo Ibanez necks; for the satin, un-glossed feel they use for their necks. Even companies like Schecter are switching to unfinished/unglossed necks because people have complained about the glossy neck hindering the playability. So, yes, people here are acting rather ignorant because a) They've never actually used an unfinished/satin/oiled neck, b) don't sweat as much as other people, or c) being dumbass youtube trolls.
@themodernguitarist
@themodernguitarist 9 лет назад
Terrance Hill Also, the mod is actually reversable. You can go over it with a few times with lighter grits of sandpaper and polish it down with either wax or a proper polishing compound. Everyone's making such a big fuss about the resale value and... well... reminds me of how hard guitarists are to deal with.

Works great. I've done this to all 3 of my guitars, and it greatly improves my speed of movement, both up and down neck, and also from top to bottom. I found that I wasn't having to bend my wrist (or stretch my fingers) nearly as much because my palm was more readily sliding right into optimal position on the neck. Thanks much.

After months of deliberation since I first saw this video, today I did this to two of my guitars including a Squier CV telecaster (which has a very thick poly coat on neck) . I can say now that the improvement in feel alone makes this very worthwhile indeed. I'm not a shredder at all but it makes it easier to play and just feels delightful.

@jeffdowning4877
@jeffdowning4877 8 лет назад
I think the reason it feels so much better is because with a gloss finish, one's hand tends to feel "slippy" gripping the neck, and therefor makes one clamp down more, whereas a satin finish feels more accurate, less prone to slipping, and therefor results in less of a "clamp" action with the hand. This relaxation allows for more fluid navigation of the neck and less hand fatigue. Some of it is just perception, but if it changes how you are holding it that makes it an important factor.

FYI People. He is not removing the protective finish from the guitar. He is just knocking down the gloss. Big difference. If he wanted the shine back all he would have to do is run 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper over it, and a little rubbing/polishing compound. Voilla instant shine again. If you know how to paint, you would know this.

Hi, I'm interested because I have Nitro cellulose finish on bass.. can this also mean that if I have a nitro finish, and sand it, and apply the compound you mentioned- it can be glossy like other guitars?
@IvanBenkovic

It really works, I have found this method 12 years ago on my second banjo and I use up to now on my last Telecaster. The movement of my left hand is much more free and faster even if I have sweated palm. I know sandpaper is little drastic for new instrument, but I prefer comfort playing to pretty shiny back of the neck.

@TheWordUnSpoken; I have played guitar for 36 years and have broken exactly ZERO necks... The only bolt on neck I have ever owned was my very first Les Paul copy which I still have to this day... WITH its original neck STILL intact and still very much unbroken. It is pure elemental PHYSICS! Bolt on necks DO NOT and CANNOT have more sustain than a neck thru body. Yes there may be certain exceptions to the rule..but those rare "bolt-on" exceptions will never out sustain the same "neck-thru" exceptions... Neck-through solutions WILL deliver a longer sustain, a more defined attack and a higher note definition, especially on the fundamental harmonics! I would MUCH rather have and play a "neck thru body" than a "bolt-on" neck, for the pure feel, playability, increased sustain and tone... If you worry about "breaking the neck" THAT MUCH over the quality of sound coming from your instrument of choice, then I suggest you actually are not careless with it... use a locking stand, a locking strap, don't try to play stupidly drunk, OR fling it about in some acrobatic fashion trying to "look cool" while performing/playing, OR I don't know.. using your guitar as a hammer... The only drawback I notice is simply the price..but then again you get what you pay for.

Some amazing instrument out there with gloss necks. Mainly the old guitars. If you come across a 70's beauty and don't buy it because of glossy necks - the next person with some light abrasive paper is going to be grinning all the way to plugging it in.

Wormweed Do you have to add some sort of oil to the back of the neck after making it satin?
@gvtshorts2024
@gvtshorts2024 6 лет назад
shinglam szeto No don't ever add oil to it or any polishes. You're only sanding the glossy shine off until the finish looks matte, you are not removing the coating completely, so the wood is still sealed. Clean it with a slightly damp cloth every now and then, when it feels dirty, and then wipe it with a dry cloth.

Some guitars came new with that done to the neck some years ago as i recall. It does work as i did it to a guitar back then. For beginners it makes easier movement to reach around the neck. As he mentions, your hand movements eventually polish it back to a gloss but the Urethane is quite thickly built up so can be done many times. Especially if very fine abrasive scotch brite pads of really fine wet & dry sandpaper is used.
@ArkRed1
@ArkRed1 11 лет назад
Benedetto told me to spray lacquer thinner on the neck to make it faster. The folks @ LMI said to use different fine grits of W/D paper, and it would make the poly neck faster. It worked like a charm. After I played it awhile the gloss in the neck came back, but it was still faster than when I got it from the factory. This fellow's idea works well too. Thanks for posting.

I can recommend trying out a satin neck if you have never played one. The difference in the reduction of friction or "stickiness" is amazing. And the improvement stays if you are sweaty handed too. I bought a PRS Bernie Marsden which came with the satin neck finish as standard and was astounded at how much easier I could move my hand up and down. It wasn't just less effort, it meant it was easier to be accurate in going from position to position too. Try one first before you do this to an existing favourite though, going back would be - - well - - more difficult!

A long time ago I completely stripped a bad varnish finish off a set neck guitar and refinished the entire guitar just with oil. The resulting feel was fantastic. Years down the line I own a Wolfgang with an unfinished neck which sort of proves the point of how good a bare or satin finish feels compared to what feels like a gloopy gloss finish. I dabble making bitsa guitars and if its likely to be a good one, I'll strip the neck to bare wood and just refinish with oil.

Thanks so much for your thoughts .. you've really got me thinking ... Something that may be related .. traditional wooden cricket bats .. I just googled 'breaking in a new cricket bat' .. lots of posts, including "How to Oil and Break in a New Cricket Bat: 7 Steps" ( www.wikihow.com/Oil-and-Break-in-a-New-Cricket-Bat ) .. very, very interesting .. playing with a well-seasoned cricket bat is a wonderful joy .. and over time cricket bats develop personalities all their own .. just like guitars .. and just like .. us .. people .. LOL !!! The first mention of a cricket bat is from 1624, and the oldest surviving bat is from 1729 .. so very different to today's bats .. and cricket legend Dennis Lillee once used an aluminium bat .. google Combat cricket bat .. there's even a You Tube clip of him playing with one in a match .. highly amusing !!! But seriously, maybe there's something in cricket bat lore that may help produce the sweetest playing and sounding guitar ever !!! Maybe ...

Agreed. Unfinished as in not even oiled is just asking for warping and dirt impregnation. However, after playing all sorts of finishes, I much prefer oiled over satin or gloss (yuck).

Thank you, Mr. Frudua, for your informative videos. This is a wonderful little mod, I'm doing it to all my gloss finished basses for some time now. Satin necks are so much more comfortable, I'm wondering why do they make them gloss at all. And it's easy to buff the neck back to gloss again if needs be. The comments are fucking unbelievable, though.

i also like them, one of my 2 best guitars has a satin neck. both are schecter, the satin neck is a damien elite, and the other is a hellraiser. i have no trouble soloing with either. with a poly-urethane finish, just keep a little less thumb pressure
