After getting orders from a table, I don't rush to go put that order into the system. I'll first see if there are some other orders I can collect, then start gathering items to pre-bus, run those to dish, THEN put orders into the system.
Then I'll grab food or drink to go out front.
*Getting hot food takes precedence over everything in most restaurants. I typically try to put orders in first, but if I'm in the back and expo is yelling at me to run food, that's what I'll do and that's what you'll do too.
I'm rarely reacting to what happens -- there's a general system I follow and stick to. If I'm darting to action with every thing that comes up, I'll be burning quite a bit of energy and time unnecessarily.
If I am ever overwhelmed: PAUSE. ASSESS. EXECUTE.
Full hands in, full hands out.
Your manager will always appreciate this, but it's not really for them or even for the restaurant. As with most all of our training, it's designed to improve YOUR workflow. Management, your coworkers, the restaurant, and guests are natural beneficiaries of you doing things better -- even if their benefit is not the primary driver of your actions.
So back to full hands in, full hands out: This is to help you from running back to the kitchen to grab a fork, then to the floor to get an order, then to the computer to put in a order, then to the back to grab a drink, then here, there, everywhere. It's exhausting.
Work with mindfulness. While on the floor, try and take care of everything that needs taking care of on the floor. While in the back, try and take care of everything that needs taking care of in the back.
This will save you trips, simplify your workflow, and ultimately allow your to provide better, more efficient service. Better money is a natural by-product of better performance. This won't necessarily hold true for EVERY table, but on a more macro level, this is absolutely the case.

Great advice here. The "flow" was something that took me YEARS to learn and people watching this can learn it in seriously 5 minutes. Would you guys be willing to make a video discussing how to overcome fears and anxieties that a lot of servers have? That was my biggest problem when I started serving/hosting...unnecessary fears and thoughts like my managers, co-workers, cooks, customers, etc getting upset at me...making mistakes, and forgetting to put orders in or take orders. I think a few videos on that would really help a lot of people feel more confident.

Thanks for your comment! Almost all the training we have is aimed to improve server efficiency and workflow. The more volume a server can generate, the more they can earn. It's that simple. Obviously gotta do a good job too but efficiency > salesmanship. Appreciate the suggestion! I'll see if I can come up with something. Most likely, it'll be a blog post here: realservertraining.com/

Thanks for this video! I had a stressful first dinner rush and this really helped. Taking orders from section > putting stuff into the computer right away is a good tip I’ll def be using in the future

Glad this helps! Take orders -> pre-bus -> dish -> put in orders to computer -> grab items for front -> set items -> take orders -> repeat :)

My boss got mad at me for not putting in order right away because it comes out too slow, and more importantly when you get to the POS, you put in multiple orders and slam the bar/kitchen. What do u think?

yeah I try to not to hold orders then put in like 10... I get a few orders, put em in, run food, get some more, put em in, etc. it's more about handling as much as I can while on the floor instead of darting back and forth with each order

How often do you check on your table?

after serving entrees? just once. then every time I see a close to empty drink. Then to pre bus. ideally as few times as possible tho.
