How to MAX the Hand Release Push Up (ARMY ACFT)

The hand release push up is the third event of the #ACFT and tests your upper body endurance.
The Standards:
Gold - 10
Silver - 20
Black - 30
The #HRPU is one of the easiest exercises to improve upon but often times we over complicate it. We look at a bunch of upper body workouts that we find on the internet or on RU-vid that will have us look shredded but it really does not take much.
My technique for HRPU and regular PU which has helped me max this event every time I’ve taken it has been proven to produce results.
My method? Find some time during the week to binge watch your favorite TV show or sports game.
Now find an easy number of HRPU (Or push ups) that you can do without feeling like you’ve actually done work. (Example, 10 HRPU).
Before you allow yourself to watch the next episode or next quarter of the game, knock out those HRPU. You’ll get back up feeling accomplished, and you’re able to repeat this process because the low number that you set for yourself does not give your mind the chance to talk yourself out of it.
If you watch 5 episodes on a Saturday, and 5 on a Sunday, that’s 100 HRPU that you’ve done over the course of the weekend which puts you closer to reaching your goal and makes you stronger in the process.
I hope this helps! Have fun training!

Very good point (by experience) - feels like you didn't get a good workout with such amount of reps, but those reps really matter. As a bonus you always in tone and ready to perform! The fitness will came with frequency, not just all-in (smoke) workout

The only reason why I maxed my push ups is because my NCO was a straight up g and counted all my reps.

Thanks, LT. Old LTC Chaplain here....what exercise has most helped you increase your reps for the HRPU? I always maxed the APFT pushups and find the HRPU at least twice as hard as the old ones. Any additional advice for increasing reps and not just passing?
@AlvintheDirector
@AlvintheDirector 3 года назад
Chaplain, I found that HRPU drills have worked in increasing the amount of reps that I can complete in a short amount of time. At least once a week, I will do the following: 1 min max HRPU, 2 min rest 45 sec Max HRPU, 1:30 rest 30 sec Max HRPU, 1 min rest As many HRPU to failure HRPU is much harder than regular push ups but by building your upper body endurance, you will increase very quickly! I have two female soldiers straight out of AIT who did 8 HRPU in September. And by January both of them did 37 HRPU on the ACFT diag!

Wow!! That’s amazing:-). I remember how I first started maxing my push-ups long ago.....50...rest.....45.....rest....40....rest...etc. same concept! Thanks for the reminder:-)

When you do the SDC, can you demo in a few different shoes? I am considering getting cleats or cross country spikes to make that max score easy and I think footwear can make or break that event

No room for error if trying to max. The whole movement takes about 3 seconds and assuming you stay on track . In 2 min the max you can hope for is 60 and nothing over unless super athlete. IMO 2 min is not enough
@Sacrede1
@Sacrede1 2 года назад
True but its kind of a gray area honestly. I have guys that are doing between 65-75...I have some above 75. I can BARELY make it to the 62 I can do in 2 minutes. I think it mostly depends on the fluidity of your movements to make it LOOK like its done correctly and speeding up that fluidity. It also depends on your grader whether they paying attention or not haha
@bedhprakash
@bedhprakash Год назад
To get 60 in 2 min, you only have 2 seconds per push up..😢

Bro I have been doing one arm hand release push ups for a year and a half now. Feet shoulder width. 3 second eccentrics. I am 85kilo and I can bench 50 kilo dumbbells for 17 non stop reps. My HR OAPU max is 27 per arm. Once they are at 55 reps it will be time to bulk to 100kilo+ while maintaining the same max reps. Most importantly, after i got to 25 reps on these, I maxed out at 85 non stop push ups. So they are building strength endurance and strength at the same time. Perhaps you wanna feature it in a next video.
