HOW TO MODIFY A LOG SPLITTER

This video showcases my Huskee 22 ton log splitter that was converted to have a boom and a hand crank winch for dealing with some massive trees that we had to clean up.
The boom and winch made this rather ordinary, nothing special splitter, into a great machine that allows me to take on stuff alone that used to take 3 people.
Very happy with my set up. Leave me a message in the comments what you think. And come back for the next video where we put it to use and show off the capabilities that it has now.
Thanks for watching.

I like the design of the log tongs. And, they are still available. The log splitter looks in really good shape. I like your log wagons. It's great to repurpose farm equipment that is no longer used for it's intended purpose. Thanks for visiting my channel today. I actually watched this video previously, but did not comment. I watch most of my videos on my iPad after putting them into a playlist. And I am sitting at my desk doing my 40 hour grind. LOL - So, sometimes I can't stop to comment on the videos.

I like the New Idea spreaders. Oak was too valuable for firewood. We had plenty of Elm. It's sad to drive past the grove now. Other than the Hackberry a elder Sister planted It's mostly crap trees. Thank you Gary.

Cool setup with the winch and skidding tongs. I like it. Yes, there's nothing like having a two stage pump for power. The vast majority of our local wood splits with little effort and second stage would seldom come into play. But when you hit the gnarly ones, it sure IS nice to have it. You know, there's a lot of guys that use old manure spreaders for wood haulers. It IS a good idea for sure.

Nice modification Gary, real nice. 22 ton will split almost everything you're right. Slow but mighty splitters are available for a good price. Winston raised his up so we're not bent over as much. Those vertical splitters by eastonmade are beautiful but holy cow, $20,000 to split wood. Thanks for showing Gary.❤ Kenny
@tractortalkwithgary1271
@tractortalkwithgary1271 9 месяцев назад
Totally agree Kenny. My Dad had a 3 pt splitter that went on the back of one of the 520 John Deere’s. That thing killed my back bending over like that. The 2 stage hydraulics are so far superior to the single stage, it isn’t even funny.

The modifications are very cool and boom looks like a great design. Thanks for detailing the modifications. Over here we only have one size of ball which is 50mm which is used for very light weight trailers right through to the max allowed at 3,500kg. The spreaders look perfect for hauling logs

Nice upgrade to that log splitter by adding a boom like that. Definitely a work smarter not harder idea. I've never worked with a vertical style log splitter. Other that having to work bent over or, as you indicated, on your knees to save your back. Even with the slow cycle times it looks like a pretty good machine to split up a lot of wood at one time & probably not be near as worn out as you might be with a horizontal style log splitter.
@tractortalkwithgary1271

Hi there Gary, I really like the boom mod on the splitter and I am looking forward to seeing it in action. Speaking from years of experience I agree 100% that 22 tons is more than adequate to split whatever you throw at it. Cycle time is the big factor but many times you don't have to fully retract or press forward to split the wood. In addition, if you're not production splitting or selling an abundance of firewood then cycle time isn't all that important. Have a great Halloween!
@tractortalkwithgary1271
@tractortalkwithgary1271 9 месяцев назад
Thanks Paul. These may not have the long life that some of the bigger commercial duty splitters have. But you can buy two of these for less money than one of those cost. I burn a lot of wood and this has split the winter firewood for two households for a number of years. It still looks good for its age. It runs and operates well too.
@timbervisions

That's pretty slick. I like the way you hold it up with the winch until the splitter gets on it. When I used to use my old splitter in vertical position, I had to hold it up against the beam. Not user friendly. Look forward to seeing it in action.
