How To Mount An Anvil - I Didn't Think That Was Going To Happen!
I just received my new blacksmithing/ knife making anvil and needed to mount it. So I made a Mount and forged a knife while I was at it!
This is knife making for beginners. And knife forging for beginners. Im not an expert and this was literally the first knife I ever forged.
About⬇️
Hi, Im Alex, im a knife maker and RU-vidr, based out of southern Pennsylvania and my youtube channel is Outdoors55. This channel started as an outdoor backpacking channel, but quickly grew into a knife/ knife making channel. Everything I do on my channel is family friendly. I primarily focus on knife / knife making videos but occasionally throw in something different. Thank you for watching!😀

Great video. Next stop, Forged in Fire

A couple of tips, flatten the sides of your hammer handle so it doesn't roll in your hand, round the edges of the hammer face, it doesn't leave as many hammer marks. Also, hold the hammer firmly and don't put your thumb on the top of the handle, it leads to wrist problems in the future

That is a great looking anvil! #EveryoneWantsAnAnvilTheseDays I don't think it is a buyers market for used anvils anywhere after forged and fire! Forged in Fire is doing for blacksmith suppliers what Crossfit did to Rouge Fitness Equipment.

When forging or swinging a hammer, I would suggest curling your thumb around the hammer handle. Placing along the handle puts a lots of stress other the thumb and joint increasing the risk of arthritis. Cheers mate

Nice quick knife. Don't be surprised that it hardened since rebar steel is actually NOT crap steel. It has to perform under load embedded in concrete, so crap steel would make crap concrete BUT all rebar is not the same - consider each different piece different mystery steel. When it comes to the heat treat, heat the spine of the knife slowly and watch for colour change on the cutting edge. When you're where you want to be, quench. This way you'll get a softer (relatively) spine that can take more abuse and a hard, consistent edge. By heating the edge (or that close to the edge) it's easier to screw up the temper and it leaves the spine too hard and therefore brittle. When the edge gets to a blue it won't hold an edge well.

Alex, Thanks for making this video. I am new to the world of Blacksmithing and I too took to RU-vid for information. EC is a great RU-vid channel and he is an amazing speaker. I love his videos. I have been doing as much research online as possible on purchasing my first anvil. EC placed the Kanca brand anvil on his list for beginner blacksmiths. I am mentoring with a local blacksmith as well as a young farrier. Everyone has their opinion concerning anvils. There is a Texas Farrier Supply 30 minutes away from me and they offer the ductile iron hardened anvils (TFS Blacksmith). But I continued looking for a dropped forged anvil as well. The only two that I was able to find that I could budget for were the Kanca and the Ridgid-Peddinghaus brands. The Ridgid are around $7-$9 per pound for theirs and the Kanca are at $5 per pound. I, just today about 10 minutes ago, pulled the trigger on a 110 lb. Kanca from CentaurForge. $625, no tax, $30 shipping. I would like to know if you are still happy with your choice of with the Kanca anvil. Thank you for making the video and my next step is to design an anvil stand. I am also in the process of making the propane forge that EC designed. Best wishes and I will be reviewing your Channel as well.

For knifemaking, I have my anvil to be a wrist height, but that is my preference. Also I found using a little bit of silicone caulk under the anvil to be the best way to quiet it down.

I have the same issue here with the used anvil prices. I wanted the 50KG model myself, but it was too costly for my budget. I have the 35KG kanca, it is a huge improvement over the 20lb stake anvil I started out on lol. That little stake anvil was great for small stuff like jewelry and hooks, but I needed something much bigger for knives and such.

Dude - way to use already fallen wood. you’re a better man than me. I got my anvil a little while ago… still trying to find someone with a big oak that needs to be cut, so I can get the perfect base for this baby, generate some firewood and some prime material for woodworking projects at the same time. My neighbor has a good sized oak that’s been declining over the past 10 years and will eventually die. Just a little more convincing and I think he’ll let me take it. Love your videos brother. Looking forward to the projects you turn out on that beautiful Kanca! 😉👍🏼

You seem to be a little bit like me Alex, always looking at expanding your skills and knowledge. Keep on doing it for as long as you can. Me, I am nearly 80 and still trying to learn new things and skills every day (such as knifemaking). The first knife is waiting for pins to fit the scales, then I will make a sheath and look for something else to learn, or maybe make a few more knives? But I am not going to get into using all that fancy knife oven stuff that you have as it would be a waste of $$ at my age.

Rebound isn't important. When you're hitting hot soft metal, you don't get that much bounce. If it's bouncing when you strike it, put it back in the fire! It's too cold.
@ajsbd3815
@ajsbd3815 5 лет назад
Joshua Samuels rebound is important because it makes you strain your arm less when you bounce your hammer on the anvil when you change hammering positions. Rebound can also give you and idea of how hard your anvil is, which is very important in forging
@joshuasamuels4802
@joshuasamuels4802 5 лет назад
@@ajsbd3815 I get what you're laying down, but I've heard from 2 other pros that rebound isn't all that important. Yes, a bounce height of 1/4 inch, for me anyways, is needed for grip adjustments... But having a hardened surface being struck by a missed heavy blow by another hardened steel... you get sharp chips that fly off at bullet speeds.
