Knife making, how to make a machete with an angle grinder and basic hand tools.
In this video I show just how easy it can be to make a knife with basic tools. We do most of the knife shaping with an angle grinder. And heat treat it in a camp fire and kitchen oven. This is a very easy knife making project that can be completed in a day. And you will have a knife that will chop through anything!
The steel that is used is the most important part of this project. 1080 and 1084 are the best steel for beginner knife makers. They are the easiest steel to heat treat for beginner knife makers.
Good cheap angle grinder amzn.to/2UhA5bh
Good magnet on stick amzn.to/2OurtZB
File amzn.to/2YunalB
Round file amzn.to/2FCQFca
Good flap disk amzn.to/2TEI8dZ ( you can find these at Home Depot)
1/16" cut off disk can be found at Home Depot or a hardware store. As well as 1/4" grinding disks.

The best video about knife making I've ever seen. It shows how to make a usable knife using simple tools. I appreciate the US-Boys for that: they don't talk around for long, they just do it. Many greetings from Germany to my American Friends! 🇩🇪 🇺🇸

@@OUTDOORS55 Hi Alex. I want to try bringing out some textures using ferric chloride. How long do you need to keep the steel (1080) in the acid to get a nice result?
@brianwiggins2169

Brian Mansfield the longer it is in the acid the more it will pop

@@brianwiggins2169 Thanks. But is there a minimum amount of time you should shoot for?

Brian Mansfield in about 30 minutes you will get good results but the longer the better. You can really just keep checking back and forth until you get to where you want

I live in Mobile, Al and I haven’t been able to find any place to get knife making material . I’ve heard using leave springs . What do you think 🤔? And glad you did you wood fire so I know I can do this too ! Anything you can share I would appreciate ! Thanks for sharing keep up the good work young man ! Oh by the way I’m a 60 year young wanting to learn ! Who said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks ! LoL Have a great day !

I think it is awesome looking.....my favorite finish. Thank's for the time you took to do it. I really like that pattern......I have been wanting to do a big knife like that but am still developing my skills. One day soon maybe when I get a better forge setup. I could make it the way you did with 1084 but I might wait for a slightly better forge this spring with an electric fan at least....awesome pattern. I do love re curves.

If you have some basic metal working tools like an angle grinder its fairly easy. You won't get crazy good finishes with it but it will make a functional blade. 🙂

i love and hate this video for sooo many reasons. I love it because it shows that despite some of the mistakes you make in your process, sword/knifemaking is a VERY forgiving process. That is an amazing feat, though maybe in some ways NOT what you set out to do. I love your desire and your effort. But when you didnt cut thru your baseball I knew i had to say something. its not a sharpness problem, its a geometry problem. If you really wanna make something that CUTS, not PRY open a surface, use a primary bevel ONLY. Basically its incredibly difficult to make a secondary bevel sharp enough to overcome the binding that happens onthe back side of the cut. Make at least the recurve portion of the blade a primary only and the rounded section of the tip area a convex grind with a 2ndary bevel. I know the video is 3 years old, but if you could address this in a reprise video just to a/b compare the 2 blades, Im sure you will see the difference. PS: the only real reason i hate the vid is simple. You put the blade edge DOWN in the fire. You said it yourself edges get hotter faster than spines. you want the edge to get hot LAST the body of the blade will hodl the heat. Edge down increases the likelihood of BURNING the blade. Small quibble really, but i've seen people eff this up and ruin all that work. overall great video though. overseas we would often tell new contractors to put some death on that hip, meaning get a blade. well done.
