In today's video I will be showing you how I slightly adjusted the screw holes on a window frame to accommodate a new locking stay.
You can buy me a coffee here www.buymeacoff... or become a monthly member to unlock Discord forum membership, exclusive content and automatic entry into my FREE Monthly Giveaway. Thank you SO SO much!!
You can now access my 🛠Charlie DIYte Amazon Tool Store here www.amazon.co.... - where you'll find all my tried, tested and much loved DIY tools arranged into handy categories.
It's so quick and easy to do this, and a great skill to have - as there will be lots of times during your DIY career when you need to slightly move screw holes eg when fitting new hinges to a door, or when you you have a screw that won't tighten in its hole.
So the trick is to take an every day match and simply tap it into the existing hole, and like me in this video (where I use extra large matches) you may, if your screw hole is very small, need to cut one end of the match into a fine tip to help you insert it into the hole.

Hi Charlie, I'm an old carpenter/cabinet maker. I get through hundreds of wooden golf tees a year for this. They are really cheap, pointed for easy start and you don't end up lots of match ends to dispose of. Regards Gary,

Thank you from a grateful old lady. Window fastening was really irritating and to get someone to come was $145 to just come through the door. $25 materials and hey presto, all done and I redid the other windows as well while I was at it as they had been put in crooked by professionals. Many thanks again, love your videos

Professionals are known to do poor jobs at everything, particularly finish carpentry. If you do it yourself, you can perfect it to the n-th degree. e.g. You can prime walls 2-3 times, and put 5 coats of paint on it, plus polyurethane seal, all for the price of only materials and time.

Thanks for this excellent video! My grandad taught me the matchstick trick for repairing stripped threads when I was a child, and I’ve used it many times throughout my life, but I never thought to apply the same technique when you need a new hole in a position that overlaps the old hole!

Yet again, another useful video :) I have used a similar process before on kitchen cupboards where the carcass has been damaged where the door hinges screw into it. Although this was not to move the screw holes, just to repair the damage so the door hinge could be re-fitted, the process is pretty similar. The holes are a lot larger and therefore I drilled out the damaged area with a large bit and glued in a wooden dowel which after the glue had set could have a pilot hole drilled ready for the hinge screw. Works a treat! This process could also be useful for people with damaged "laminated chipboard or mdf" furniture like wardrobes where children have been swinging off the doors and caused damage! Saves scrapping the wardrobe! Cheers

I am VERY Grateful for this video since it exemplifies the Epitome of moving screw holes, just a tad. Old shutters tend to warp due to gravity, eventually making them tough to open and close. Now it feel more than reasonable to lift the screw a whole 1/4". Thanks!

I was faced with the same issue you had (old house, cockeyed kitchen ceiling, as noted below) so I made up shaped vertical fillets to occupy the spaces over the wall cupboards. This immediately did away with those annoying dark wedges of shadow. Emulsioning them gave a 'solid' look so they're much prettier-but they also prevent the build up of hard-to-access greasy grot and insects in the spaces.

I've done something like this in the past when replacing old deadbolts and it works very well - imagine a new lock having a different hole pattern than a 75 year old one? I used small (3/16" dowels) because they are a good hard wood that holds screws very well and the force a surface mount deadbold might face are a lot more than a window lock will likely see..

Great idea, and well explained, now can I do something similar with a wall?, I marked exact, or so I thought, 4 holes to attach neon angel wings to the wall, for my daughter (don't ask) one of the holes is slightly too far to the right, and I thought I might have to start again higher up and use filler for the mess I've made already 😢 the screws go inside a metal tube, then the holes in the wings, then a top that screws onto the tube, so they need to be very precise.

Hi I'm a big fan of your videos. Very informative and done well with tons of great information .I have a small suggestion that you might find helpful. There is an item here in the USA called VIX bits. They are different size drill bits inside of a sleeve that you put in your cordless drill. You put it in a hole such as the ones in your new window locking stays and it automatically centers the drill bit so you have a perfectly centered pilot hole to put your screw in. Keep up the great work!

Not essential, but it helps because once set it's part of the wood whereas when still wet it might move under compression from the screw, but this isn't a big issue.

You're very kind! On a plastered wall I would use a filler like I showed in this vid goo.gl/58WyjZ - which is basically like liquid plasterboard until its set. I love Gripfill but you could also use Tetrion or various other fillers. Wait for it to dry fully and then re-drill the hole. You have a great Christmas too!

Do you have the wait for the glue to dry so everything is nice and solid before drilling.I image the wet glue might make that matchstick wet and soft until it’s properly dry 🤔

@CharlieDIYte 3 года назад
Yes absolutely. And funnily enough in this video that I've just posted bit.ly/3vmaFYl at 10:50 mins in, I made some pegs this time for a masonry wall. You can easily make them yourself this way, and if you haven't already got one, a belt sander is a fantastic way of shaping them. If you can, wait for the glue to set before redrilling for the bolt.

I prefer single slot screws, especially in old houses where phillips types look out of place. Snap On make decent screwdrivers that don't ruin the screw head, and although they're expensive, they do have a lifetime warranty.

+bearwoodcarpentry I recently bought a new Panasonic VXF990EBK camcorder, and splashed out on the Panasonic external microphone because I didn't find the internal one to be that great, and Panasonic wide angle lens for it, oh, and the larger battery pack. I leave the wide angle lens on all the time as it has the added benefit of keeping dust out of the standard lens. It's a year or two old as I don't think Panasonic have brought out a new model since 2016 - maybe this is their last? I like camcorders because they're so easy to use, and with the extra batteries I'm never going to run out of juice whilst filming. That said a lot of RU-vidrs are using DSLRs because you get a much better depth of field. But after doing loads of research I decided that they were just too high maintenance for my line of videos!
