In this video I’m going to explain how to overhaul vintage mountain bike pedals. In this case the original vintage Deore XT pedals that came with my Koga Miyata Skyrunner Carbolite.
A lot of older mountain bike pedals cannot be serviced but are sealed and not meant to ever take apart again. That is not the case with these high-end Deore XT pedals. They offer a similar style dust cap you find on cranksets, with a tiny opening where you can put a flathead screwdriver into to pry it off.
A mountain bike pedal behaves very similar to a hub axle. This means that in this case loose bearings are held into place using cone- and lock nuts.
I've also written a blog post with more information. If you want to read this article go to www.restoration.bike/bike-rep...

Thanks, after watching your video I decided to give it a try and fix my old Deore PD-M650 pedals and it was actually easier than I was expecting. You just have to take your time. I used the small magnetic flathead screwdriver to place the bearings one by one like you did, and used a scalpel to correct the position of the bearings. Tip, I used a small magnet to collect the bearings from the mineral spirit solution.

I have some old Welgo dual flat/spd pedals on my turbo bike and I noticed that one pedal was very stiff. They are similar design to the ones you serviced and I tried dismantelling them but after taking off the locknut I couldn't get the washer off. I needed them back on the bike, so I decided and try again later but when I replaced them, they spun freely, so releasing the locknut must have freed them up. As the bike is always inside on the trainer, I'm not too worried. And I got a PB going round Central Park. :)

What kind of Grease are you using, can i use the same grease for BB, steerin Stem, Pedals, Wheels ?

standard ball bearing grease. You can use the same everywhere. Professional shop owners use anti squeak grease (the sticky blue-white stuff) which does what the name implies and is less likely to be washed away by water.

How does one know that his pedal bearings are worn out?
@restorationdotbike

Wear means material of either the bearing or the bearing race diminishes. This causes play. You can check it by moving the pedal body with your hands.
