Watercolour Demonstration for beginners and more advanced painters. This demo shows you have to paint buildings, trees , water and reflections. / purewatercolour www.purewatercolour.com/
It is the most informative demonstration for me, a beginner in waterclour, that I have come across to date. Congratulation. Incidentally: I am 78 years old, and I took up scetching with graphite and watercolour painting some 7 months ago. It changed my life for the better. I have a new lease on life!
I was introduced to you by Liron Yanconsky, from whom I also love to learn. I cannot wait to wake up tomorrow and start painting Diglis Locks, and to explore more of your website! Thank you for this tutorial. I love this painting!
Lisa Canterbury Its funny how we love something at school drop it then go back later in life. I am pleased to hear your enjoying it any questions please don't hesitate to ask :)
I used to paint many years ago and have taken it up again after having early retirement thrust upon me due to ill health. I enjoy watching your videos as I find them inspirational and educational. Please keep them coming.
Thanks Michael I am pleased you find the videos helpful. I am sorry to hear about your health issues as you know watercolour is a rewarding and interesting way to spend some of your days. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Love the way you broke it down and simplified it, the effect of working in stages like this makes it so much easier... And the overall effect is amazing.. Brilliant video, and thank you for sharing!
Hello Patrick, Your instructions and demonstration are soooooo helpful. So supportive and reassuring. I even like when you recognize a mis-stroke, comment and show how you make an adjustment. I didn't even make a drawing, I just followed your process and had one "ah-ha" moment after another. I've always loved the ephemeral nature of watercolour but never cracked the way to make it more light-filled and fluid. I hated the way what I was seeing and sensing turned out heavy, solid and rigid. I will definitely be following your channel. Wonderful. Cheers, Maggie in Melbourne, Australia
Thank you very much. I found this very encouraging. You made it very interesting to see the detail that make a basic painting so special to a beginner. I'm so looking forward to viewing your other demonstrations now. Will keep me quiet for a good while!
Hi Patrick, This was my first time watching you. You make it seem very easy. Your a great instructor, and you explain ever thing as you go along which makes it easy to follow. Thank you
More than a year after you made it this is still one of my go to videos. I hope that you will keep making some like this from time to time. Like ho to interpret and simplify a scene and also how to choose the combination of colors so it looks OK. Thank you again!
Francoise de Rocher Thank you for your comment. Once you have learnt the basics getting the right strength of colour, colour mixing, different techniques like dry brush and wet in wet it is relatively easy. The secret is just relax and don't put pressure on yourself to produce a great painting every time you sit down, experiment and have fun for me that's what its all about.
Thanks for another beautiful demo! I was wondering - I've noticed for a while that you tend to use a relatively smaller brush, even for larger areas. Why, and how do you ensure the washes are even? I actually tried the same, and loved the fact that I can get a nice variety on larger washes (with a smaller brush), but it's also risky, as some of the wash may dry before you finish it. Thanks again, love all of your vids!
I enjoy your videos immensely Patrick. Watching you work and comment as you do is very helpful and is helping me as I return to painting after a thirty year hiatus. Many thanks!
I like simple! Lol. Especially when it comes to watercolor. Thank u for your kind effort in putting your painting process on video for those who are in need of guidance and inspiration to paint. Best wishes!
Thank you for this Tutorial. I am new to watercolours and approached it as if I were using acrylics, by painting each section bit by bit, now I know that you use layers, I totally love watercolour now and the effects I can achieve and the colour combinations by mixing !! will be following you for more great tips and ideas. thank you again
It was a good exercise in keeping the painting simple but with all of the detail required so our minds could see what was a most pleasant scene ....I enjoyed watching and now to use what has be shown
Beautiful, I love this picture, really tranquil. I love your buildings and skies, and water. All of it . Really enjoy watching. Always lovely colours too.
Nice video to watch. As a beginner is very important to really keep things simple. You encourage me to continue painting 🎨! I'll definitely try this one!
Thank you very much I enjoyed it so much, i have just started painting not yet completed my first. I have found the hardest part is mixing the colours, you guys make it look so easy. Although you keep saying its simple i need more instruction but thank you.

Great video! You have brushes that are almost identical to mine 😄 This inspired me to paint a similar house near Bishop's Quay, here in Ireland. Thank you so much!
I loved this painting demo. it was extremely helpful. I will be back for more!!! I love the way you explain every detail. I am a beginner and your teaching has helped me tremendously. Thank you for sharing your talent.
Mary Caloiaro Thank you Mary. I am pleased your finding some value in my demos , I am even more pleased your going to come back for more :) Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Thank you so much Patrick, another great video. I have been watching your videos throughout lockdown, from simple clouds to scenes like this. It is amazing how much improvement has been made and all thanks to you!!!!!!!! Also you used to live in the Scillies???? We have been going there all my life
Great tutorials Patrick! Thanks for sharing so much knowledge. I usually paint in oil but lately, I have been very curious about watercolor techniques. I feel that I can become a better artist just by practicing with any medium. Somehow watercolor makes me feel that freedom to experiment. Your art is very inspiring, beautiful!
emi smith Thanks emi, I am the opposite way around i love to experiment at times with oils I really enjoy the control you can have over oils. I agree after i have painted with oils when i return to watercolour I have a new sense of freedom again. This is what makes painting such a endless fun. Please check back for more videos in the future.
I don't think you overused the word "simple". By reiterating the word, you are reassuring newbies such as myself; and removing loads of self doubt and fear of failure. Warm regards from Auckland, New Zealand.
Needs a shadow on the end of the outhouse? Light on the post is opposite to that on the building? I like the simplicity of the washes and the minimal detail. Great tutorial for beginners.
Thank you so much for showing your reference material...it makes it so much more enjoyable to watch the process when you know what the end product is supposed to be. Very helpful...tfs Marylin Smith
This has been a truly educational video.. I have learned so much from it. Your simplification of the steps involved, and great instruction and commentary has been invaluable! Thank you for all the time and effort that went into creating and posting it! cheers! :)
Wonderful. I loved seeing the abstract paint shapes become representational. Is there a reason, other than technical, why we cannot see the reference picture as you paint? It would help me see how dark values over basic washes bring the ref picture into focus. Love your videos. Thank you for sharing your talent in this generous way.

harpaint Thank you and sorry for the late reply Just returned from a few days in the New Forest we were lucky with the weather too!! Its really good to hear that you have been able to take something from my videos. Keep watching more coming in the future!
Thanks Laura, it's not that difficult if you relax and accept not every painting is going to be a masterpiece you take a lot of pressure of yourself. In turn this makes the whole process easier. www.purewatercolour.com
Hi Patrick. I've just found you on RU-vid. Wow I love the way you paint. I've just started to paint watercolor. Have you written a book on watercolor painting?
A lovely demonstration Patrick. You make it look, what's the word I'm looking for? Simple! You have a nice pace and flow; unhurried and relaxing and I can learn a lot just from that aspect of your painting alone. Can you please advise if you have a link to the drawing or picture so that I may have a go myself. Best regards.
Hi Patrick, have subscribed to your website and looking forward to seeing more videos! I was just wondering what grade of pencil you use to create your outlines? Also, I'm assuming it has to be really sharp to give the fine lines? Thanks Ed
could you please confirm the brushesthat you use in this demo. i have been painting in oils since retiring but the technique is very different and in this beautiful weather it's not easy to be inside painting so valuable to learn to pain with water colours.
tillygirl56 Thank you very much. I've been out today cycling and doing some plein air painting still have to edit the video . Not sure what it will turn out like!!
Worcestershire is beautiful. Yesterday the sun was shining it was a perfect day for painting outside. The video will be live on RU-vid in a couple of days. 😊

Hi Patrick, really enjoyed watching you paint, I'll be having a look at your other videos! Just wondered whether you stretched your paper, or is it not necessary? What kind of paper did you use? Sorry if you've already had this question! Many thanks!
