Patrick, I love your loose style and the way you talk us through the process. Coming from a technical drawing background I find it very difficult to just let go and not be too scared to make mistakes. Your very kind to give us all your time and knowledge, thank you.

You mentioned a limited palette but at the same time it's very colorful. It's good to see the boats in a painting. And I like the light but not too busy sky. It's always amazing to me how much shadows and a mat add to the finish of a painting. Thanks

+Essie Tangle Thanks Essie a Matt makes a lot of difference so does glass brings the colours up more a bit like when you varnish an oil painting.

Loved this demo. The range of values, variation of edge qualities, and loose style really work in this piece to create a realistic, yet impressionistic voyage of delight for the eye. Best demo ever!

Hi Patrick, just discovered your channel and really enjoy your work, not done a watercolour for 3 years but I think I'll dust them off again, you've inspired me! Looks like you've not done a video for a while, hope you've been OK in lockdown. All the best. Simon.

I don't know if it is where I am with my painting, but I think this is the best demo, and painting of yours ever. This has really taught me so much. I agree with Fiona, that a pdf of the sketch would help me practice this multiple times. Love this! Thank you Patrick.

Hi Patrick, I’ve just watched you paint this wonderful scene and loved every minute of it. Not only are your videos relaxing in their format but I learned so much. I’ll be honest, at first I couldn’t see how the painting was going to work but then, in front of my very eyes, it began to come to life. Thanks again, I shall be an avid pupil. I am new to watercolour and am struggling with all aspects at the moment. I’m also trying to decide what style I prefer for myself - how loose. Lastly, I e just tried a canal boat and I can say that water is the hardest thing to paint! I will look for some water work of yours. Thanks again - excellent work!

I think, quite apart from your own skills, the choice of paper is important, because I've been working on one which just wouldn't let me do (assuming I could of course!) some of the things you've achieved here. Serves me right for buying a cheaper paper (a Fabriano 130lb - although it's also true that different papers suit different techniques and different people, I think). I'm going to watch your video on drawing boats next - because although I live next to the sea, I've never really looked at them... not being a sailor. Learned a lot from this one.
@PatrickLeyGreaves
@PatrickLeyGreaves 7 лет назад
+Robert Jones absolutely choice of paper and quality will have a big outcome on your painting. Fabriano I have never painted on but I believe Steve Cronin another RU-vid artist uses it. He focuses on using a hake brush talented guy. Good luck with the boats it would be great to see your work!

Excellent tutorial. It is amazing that you made sense of all those shapes. I agree with you about the importance of good paper. No way you can do that soft blending on cheap paper. I had to ask a sailing friend what antifouling is since I had never heard that term and could not figure out what it was or meant. No sailor am I !!!

Nice video and great explanations of HOW you are thinking, something a lot of videos do not have. We need to know why you do things, and colors to cool, shadow, blend, etc. Nice job on that.I wish we had that kind of scene here in Italy, where the tide goes way out and leaves the boats stranded.We don't have many of those kinds of boats left.

Oh yes please to Mevagissey. I visited last year and have plenty of photos of the gorgeous harbour but feel overwhelmed by all the detail involved to even begin to start. I would love to see how you tackle this to get some inspiration for my own composition. Love your style, Would love to be a loose as you are without making the painting look clumsy and botched!! Keep painting!

Hello Patrick, I've just got done looking at this video and I thought it was very very well done! I also check your channel and I see you have a lot of paintings for me to look at. I am a beginner and I love your style of teaching! Question what type of paints are you using and what are your brushes? You may have explained that in other videos but I have not gotten to those yet. I am going to subscribe to your Channel with a thumbs-up on this video! Marvin
@PatrickLeyGreaves
@PatrickLeyGreaves 6 лет назад
Thanks Marvin. I use Windsor & Newton and Daler Rowneyork along with Arches watercolour. I use a mixture of brushes Isabey and just mixed synthetic ones. I also like the goat haired Chinese style brushes there great for descriptive work

Thank you very much for getting back to me Patrick and letting me know what paints you use and what brushes you are using! Would you recommend using these high-quality paints as a student? Or would I be better off to use a medium to lower grade paints?
@allarahmcmullin3917
@allarahmcmullin3917 6 лет назад
M Spates if you can afford it my advice, as a long time artist, is start out the way you mean to continue. Better quality paints and paper especially make such a difference in being able to achieve a pleasing result in this type of painting. If money is really tight right now then the most important thing is to just use what you can get your hands on and get started. Let the creativity flow! Happy painting! 😃

Hi Patrick bit of a techie question here if ok to ask. The quality of your sound and video is great quality. What camera and mic do you use, and do you dub the sound or just go for it live ?
@RobertJonesWightpaint
@RobertJonesWightpaint 7 лет назад
It's a damn' sight better than the watercolour demos by Charles Evans, on which (I am a touch deaf, mind) I can't hear a blinking word even with the sound adjusted to the top of the range: and he has his demos professionally filmed, so I think Patrick could pass on a few useful tips (not trying to film in an echoing studio might be a start). I can hear every word of Patrick's commentary so guess which site I visit more often..? And, frankly, I prefer his techniques to Evans', too....

+Martin Stephenson I used to use a GoPro on my earlier videos about a year ago I upgraded to the canon G7x mk2 it takes awesome video and excellent quality stills with its one inch sensor. Audio is straight through the camera. Hope that helps .

+Robert Jones thanks you very much. The new camera makes a big difference. Do you have any of your work online?
@RobertJonesWightpaint
@RobertJonesWightpaint 7 лет назад
Yes, I have a blog and a website, but have horribly neglected the latter thanks to technophobia, and I won't advertise it on your page - but Googlng Isle of Wight and landscapes might turn it up. You refer to Steve Cronin up above: I often watch his demos - I use a hake too, but can't get his results or anything like them on Fabriano; it may be he uses a different grade, but I find the surface so soft that it's fantastically easy to damage it: Arches is a dream by comparison.

+Michelle Martinez I started painting about 30 years ago, nothing formal just from books etc. I work part time 20 hrs a week. My goal is to be able to give up work, teach and paint full time. I wish you all the best with your ambition there's no reason why you can't realise it all it takes is motivation.
