Great job done! But I'm just wondering how to protect the paint if the brake fluid leaks a little bit on the paint when bleeding brakes..? I've seen situations when the brake fluid just ruins the paint.
I'm gonna start doing mines for my mk3 supra but I'm gonna with prep it with 2k automotive primer and bull dog adhesive promoter and 4.1 high solids clear coat
Good job! But I was wondering why you didnt bake the clear coat. Also you are using different VHT some cure at higher temps...you think that could affect the durability?
Thank you so much for watching! If I remember correctly I bake the clear coat off Camera once I painted them and waited a week installing them overall the Calipers held up over time I made a update video that I just posted yesterday.
ERICSDIYGARAGE Yes i use high temp for all products. one more question? How long after painting should i put them to bake and Should i stick to only caliper paint bc i heard using engine enamel wont last long.
Hey thats a nice looking calipers there. I was wondering how many can of paint do you use to paint all four caliper and how long do you wait for the paint to dry before you put into the oven?
Very interesting i myself am a VHT user and plan a caliper pair this summer. One thing may i know the reason why you bake before clear?? After clear do you bake again??? I would paint all and then finally bake so I wonder why you bake before clear thank you
the reason is because the vht paint takes a long time to cure if you don't let its cure and paint it right away you could get a hazy finish. if you look at the bottle I believe it says that it takes a few days to fully cure
Do you need to use the flameproof primer? I cant even find that on vhts website any longer, and it makes no mention of it on the caliper paint can as required for the painting process. Did you use it simply because the burnt copper colour you picked is an engine paint so.. It has a lower max temp rating (600F vs 900F for caliper paint)?
it's not good to over coat things because than it looses the sharp edges plus I had already used two full cans which is a lot of paint. it did not have good coverage that's why I would not recommend this kind of paint
I heard it 's not healty to put them in your regular oven (where you bake your food after). You put the clearcoat after, shouldnt you do that after the colour right away>? Resulta looks good by the way :)
thank you for your feedback, if you add the clear coat as soon as your done with the base coat you run the risk of getting a hazy finish because high temperature paint fully cures in about 7 days by placing the calipers in the oven you speed up the cure time and avoid and any haziness in the paint. I did one side of the brake disc today, can I flip them over to do the other side tomorrow? I am planning to use a heatgun but i am afraid the disc curves up if i hold it to long at a place and to hod a heatgun for 1 hour a disc is a bit to much haha . But you say if I let them dry for 7 days I dont need to heat them up anymore? And before that time the paint gets hard and just the haze? Been quit a work (upload movie next week) so I dont want to mess it up!@@ERICSDIYGARAGE
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE Very good, the same thing happened to me a couple of days ago on the rear calipers. It amost looks like bubbles or froth. I thought it was because I used VHT "satin" finish gloss. I'm not doing to take my calipers off so I will be using a heat gun that I purchased today. Good info and video, thanks.
I put high-temp POR-15 on some exhaust brackets in the oven. After I was done I put the oven in "self-cleaning" mode where it cranks up the heat to max like 500F and just burns everything away for like an hour leaving only a fine dust. Heat destroys everything and so that's what I felt was necessary to avoid residual chemicals in food.
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE Painted accent parts for my drum smoker this AM. Used this stuff a lot. Used the primer, two dust coats 15 minutes apart and then a decent wet coat 15 mins later. Cured in an old oven. Not hating, enjoy the content. This stuff is thin and it must be applied evenly and at a proper rate. I’ve made a mess of it myself. The stuff I nailed is awesome.
Can you paint over clear with base paint? I used the satin cleat just like the one that you have on the video and I think my red calipers look like shit! As the label says its SATIN so the finish doesn't have that wet look I'm going for. I bought it thinking it wasn't going to matter and that's all they had at Advanced Auto parts. It's been several weeks so I know the paint is cured. So I ordered the VHT High gloss clear online and I'm thinking of reapplying the Red caliper paint over the clear, heat it with a heat gun to 200 degrees to cure it with a heat gun. Then finally apply the clear and heat that as well so it will cure and have that WET look, not that smudge like finish it has now from the satin clear. Your thoughts?
i understand your frustration this is why i actually did not use the satin clear cloat instead i used the rustoleum high temp gloss clear. The issue with what you are going to do is that your going to have too many layers of paint and it will eventually chip faster but it can be done
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE LOL, I rewatched your and noticed that at the end and that's what I thought. Hopefully it will last 2 years. I don't think I'll have the truck longer than that. Not sure if I asked you before, how do you clean the calipers for regular maintenance? I use Meguiar's All Wheel Cleaner, microfiber rag and regular hose. If I change my pads and use brake cleaner, I'll clean the area to prevent the chemical to damage the surface. But the VHT clear is supposed to be chemical resistant and all that which is why I chose that over Rustoleum or other clears.
honestly i would try to clean them a wheel degreaser if you let the brake dust sit on the calipers for a long period they will get stained don't ask how I know lol
I've been meaning to do a video on this but to be honest the paint is not holding up well, I would recommend a high temperature caliper paint only and don't use clear coat since it seem to chip off easily
