Studies have shown that just being aware of the biases doesn't help decision making. People need to know that critical thinking is a skill one develops and actually takes consistent practice to actually use in a real life situation. Just being aware is the first step.

Great video. The ending was especially clever! You throw a bunch of obvious biases and tricks for us to ignore, before lowering our guard by telling us that we didn't fall for them. This merely hides the real bias, where you tell us we're in the special 1% for not falling for it :) Then you show great utilisation of a false dilemma with the four options! It's worked, anyways - I have subscribed :)

If you're into the subliminal messaging, his persistence with the e-book although not saying to go read the book, but still showing a glimpse of the e-book will attract you to read in the Ebook. Well first, remember these are Charlie Munger's 25 biases, there's arguably more than these. But if you really want to go further, I would look-up the 103 different logical fallacies. Can there be more than these 103? I'm not sure, but if you discover one then let the world know :)

You could have mentioned the survivor bias. Worst two examples: 1) almost everything we think to know about the middle ages is wrong, since movies repeat the misconceptions over and over again. In more general Terms: fancy things tend to survive both physically, but also in our minds, but they are not representative. 2) Buy my book! If someone like me an get successful, why not you?

I forget what you called it here, but Cialdini calls it commitment consistency. The therapy style called Motivational Interviewing relies on this. It talks calmly with alcoholics until they make some comments about the benefits of quitting and then they simply reflect those comments, making them more available in their mind (availability).

Well I sure hope I'm giving good info and I'm all about win-win. So I hope you don't think of it as losing. Being persuaded into something doesn't have to be a bad thing. If I had a bad smoking or alcohol problem, I wouldn't care too much what method someone go me to quit. I would say at the end the person did a good thing.

(for eventual readers contains questions on your Patreon: how to donate, for me not clear. Maybe can be useful for others) Lol :-) Hi Manuel ( I just discovered your name)! thank you for finding the time to answer. I was checking out your Patreon. I must admit you are the first RU-vidr that made me want to contribute, because basically and simplyfing (too much) you take a deep and stimulating message to the world, YOU seem NOT TO BE AFRAID OF MENTIONING A GOOD LIFESTILE AND MONEY BUT with an ETHICAL approach ( basically part of my projects in life) not mentioning here other interesting characteristics it seems that (I bet) you may represent (_ following your psychic advice to how to try to coldread people ;-)!! ). So I have a question on Patreon: among all the optionsof donation ( eg: 1 , 3, 5) $ and so on) if you select each of them (changing possibility at the end it results a total of 50 $ to pay for each option. I think to have understood that you donate monthly an amount you decide, but why the initial total is always 50%? One more: I was wondering if -for example- I decide to support you with 3$ each video,I am supposed to go backward and so donate 3 $ also for all the videos you already made. _I dont' know if my question(s) are clear enough because I am not native English speaker. Whatever amount I will be able to afford I would start for sure by one of the options that will include the possibility to have and hour of questions and answer with you. And I know already why. Well the reason is not because you are already in my dreams at least not yet ;-)))), but I hope this will happen soon. And I will put it in my short term goals. have a nice day! Giulia

My name is Aaron 😊 Patreon is an on going Tipping service for every time I post a video. You can simply click on one of the rewards on the right like, "Choose 3$ Tier." Then click Continue. Then there is a checkbox that says, "Optional: Set a monthly max on your pledge." You can set this to 1, if you want to limit your budget to support only 1 video per month. But I never make more than 2 videos paid per month. If you want to make only a one time donation, then you can send to my paypal farago316@hotmail.com. Any type of support is very much appreciated.
@giulijuls6424
@giulijuls6424 7 лет назад
sorry for the name, Aaron :-) what does it mean you don't make more than 2 videos payes per month? ( I red you make something like 4 a month more or less right?) can you please make me a concrete example with a number? 1) Let's pretend I would like to support your new videos with 10 $ : so if it's only 2 videos a month I will end up donating 20 $ a month? 2) and let's say someone wants instead to donate 50$ ( youmade me laugh when you wrote "I will become your slave" referring if someone makes you that donation..!!). So in this case someone will end up donating 100 euros per month, considering you said you "never make more than 2 videos paid per month"? ( I havent' get the meaning of it yet-> see my first doubt above) sorry for writing several time but I woould like to understand eventually to choose more clearly. thanks in advance

Refer back to the last cognitive bias, which is the most important. Persuasion happens when enough cognitive biases are triggered at the same time. Reduced crime rates in Germany...hmmm. I sincerely think you did not mean it in this way, but that point is rather contentious. I would argue that he increased it by millions & spread crime rates across several countries. Remember there were murder trials involved. Too bad he didn't extend his care to people, as he did to animals. Thank you for sharing the other points, of which I was unaware.

I don't understand the reward/punishment tendency and i'm having trouble locating information about it on Google.
@PositivelyBrainwashed

What part do you not understand? If you want someone to do something, give them a reward. like food or money. Or you can scare someone. If you don't quit smoking, you will get cancer.

We all wish we could have done things sooner. Like I wish I made this channel years ago. But there's no point dwelling on the past, which is called "sunk cost" in the economics world. It's a waste of time and energy. It's best to move forward so that a year from now, you won't be saying the same thing. 😊

This is a fun video--I seem to be quite resistent to these in general, though I may be too positive ;).
@PositivelyBrainwashed
@PositivelyBrainwashed 7 лет назад
Appreciate the feedback. While some people will naturally be more resistant than others on different biases, I think one of the biggest mistakes is to think you can overcome theses biases. For sure there will be times that you'll be resistant, but there are times when you're just tired, not as aware or you're in a particular mood and the next thing you know you did something you wouldn't normally do. I also recommend my video on the 'Whispers of 10,000 generations' to understand why we fall for these.
@significantvloggers6033
@significantvloggers6033 7 лет назад
Positively Brainwashed Oh, I'm resistent--and at least partially aware--but by no means am I perfect at wading through these biases, nor do I rightfully completely understand each of them (I know them, but that's not the same as fully understanding them). When I'm hungry or tired, I buy 50% more food at the grocery store like the rest of society.

Either you or I am misinterpreting the 1st point. You stated that people tend to run alway frompunishment, correct? And are more susceptible to rewards? So it doesn't make sense that the starting point to making some quit, let's say drugs, would be to highlight the health effects. Wouldn't you want to start by highlighting the positives of quitting drugs.. i.e. "Think of all the money you would save. Or think of The life you could have if you could quit"?. Rather than "stop or your gonna kill your body and your mind"?? Make sense?
@PositivelyBrainwashed
@PositivelyBrainwashed 7 лет назад
I never mentioned in this video which of the two is stronger for most people, rewards or punishment. I also didn't recommend anything about which of the two you should start off with. If you want to know which one to start off with, I would first recommend you figure out first what the person is more susceptible to, which goes beyond the scope of this video.

Love these videos. Been watching em for a while. Can you please use different music? It's great for an upbeat intro but becomes grating and distracting. The music is very repetitive. Love the content tho!
@PositivelyBrainwashed
@PositivelyBrainwashed 7 лет назад
Thanks for the feedback. The way I take criticism is based on majority. So if I get an overwhelming amount of people to say they hate the music, then I'll change it. But the data shows at the moment that there's no reason to. There's more who like it than don't. Perhaps I'll in the future I'll create a version without the music and upload it somewhere else.

What fallacy is it that people screw up the baseball bat and ball question? _If a baseball bat costs 1 dollar more than the ball and both together cost 1.10$ how much does the ball cost?_ It's basic math, but most say 10c.
