The most simple way I could explain how to start pinstriping, it's not the complete howto guide but it should be enough to learn the very basics.
What is not included (or talked about in the video) is the hours, days, weeks and years of practice. It can take a while but it is fun.
Give it a go.
If you need to know more than ask in the comments section below.

Its interesting seeing a comment like this Stan, Im 26 and have been using RU-vid since I can remember on how to learn, how to fix engines, blacksmithing, running a lathe, and now pinstriping. @PaintySniffers
@PaintySniffers Год назад
No need to say sorry mate, you found the video eventually. Painting on chrome is alright, getting it to stick is the problem. clean it really well with a degreaser first then clean it really well again with more degreaser. I use 1Shot sign enamel paint and a little hardener (the hardener is nasty stuff, read the label and all the warnings before opening, it's also really expensive over here). A 5mm line, I'd probably us an English liner brush (give it a google) and for the 2/3mm line I'd use a Mack series 10 in a size OO or OOO. The alternative is to mask the lines using fine line tape. That way you can see exactly what you're going to get before laying down any paint. Feel free to ask any other questions either here or on instagram. Have fun, stay safe and thank you for watching 👍

Really great videos and cool work. I’m practicing with sword style brushes (0, 00, 000 and 0000), and a couple scrollers. I really want to master the swords but I have a hard time controlling flares on my curves. The lines go thin to thick to thin again. I think it’s a combination of clumsy rolling of the brush, and maybe also inconsistent distance from the work surface. I’ll keep practicing, but wondering if you have any tips on how to manage the “rolling” for smoother results?
@PaintySniffers
@PaintySniffers 4 года назад
Hi jay3361, thanks for watching and the question. Advice on rolling the brush.... Try larger radius curves at first, rolling the brush slightly in the direction of the curve and lifting the handle of the brush up so there is less "hair" on the panel. Practice that and then as you get used to it and cleaner lines, try slightly tighter curves. I use my little finger to steady my hand and keep control the distance from the work surface. I may do another video on curves, maybe. Keep practicing and having fun 👍

@@PaintySniffers Hi there...just wanted to circle back with an update. I think I've resolved that the biggest issue is that I don't always effectively match the speed and direction of the brush with the spin. I have a tendency to spin too much, too early. Working on curves of varied length and sharpness of the turns helps--and I find that if I slow down and really watch the brush--watching to ensure that I'm pulling the bristles through the curve and keep the track consistent, I get good results. So your advice is right on. Thanks again. I'll keep practicing.

How do you come up with cool designs? That's what I struggle with learning to pinstripe. I understand basic concepts like mirroring, teardrop shapes, the basic line types, and even understand things like not leaving open ended lines. I can look at pro pinstriping and think this or that design looks cool, but I can't seem to figure out the style. Is it just years of practice coming up with actual designs that have that right feel to them, or are there staples of "good" designs that separate them from the bad that aren't basics?
@PaintySniffers
@PaintySniffers 3 года назад
I wish I knew a quick answer to this, I think you’re on the right track with studying other people’s designs and working out what works and what doesn’t. I take a panel and just free style lines on it, not worrying about symmetry or anything, just making shapes, connections and patterns. Then I’ll look and see if there’s anything that works, lines I like and things I don’t. You can take a while to find your style or you could stumble upon it by a happy little accident. If I think of anything else then I’ll let you know. Thank you for watching and a great question that’s got me thinking 👍

@@PaintySniffers Thank you for replying so quickly. Personally I've been playing with designs on a whiteboard. @@MysticJhn I find that drawing designs doesn't work for me, I much prefer the flow I get with the brush and getting more practice with the brush is a bonus. Great video. Could you tell me what is that black surface that you use? About the stabilo pencil, is it a regular one, like an 2HB for instance? Have you got another name for the mineral spirits? Just because where I live english is not our mother tongue. I reckon it is a fluid with a strong odor that's used to wipe off paint, like you dip a rag into that liquid and then wipe the areas you want to strip the paint off. Is that it? Thank you for this awesome video.

The black surface I'm painting on is called Alupanel, it's a sign making material. It's just like a painted metal panel. Stabilo all surface pencils wipe off easily after the paint has dried with a little water, not like a regular pencil. Mineral spirits, we call it "white spirits" here in the UK, your description sounds about right, I got the following description from Wikipedia.org "White spirit (UK) or mineral spirits (US, Canada), also known as mineral turpentine (AU/NZ), turpentine substitute, petroleum spirits, solvent naphtha (petroleum), Varsol, Stoddard solvent, or, generically, "paint thinner", is a petroleum-derived clear liquid used as a common organic solvent in painting." You would have to research which brushes are compatible with other paints. Let me know if you try it and tell me how it goes. Good luck and have fun 👍

The voice is hard to understand. I just got a kit of 1shot as a gift. I am looking to use for my goldleafing to clean up the lines. What reducer is good?
@PaintySniffers
@PaintySniffers 7 месяцев назад
Hello, sorry about the voice but it is what it is and I’m not changing it now. Reducers, I mostly use chromaflo for pinstriping but sometimes use the low temp reducer when it’s really cold. You can use mineral spirits but I find that makes the paint sort of slippery. If you need to clear over your work, add hardener to the paint and use high temp reducer but be aware the paint will dry very quickly even in the brush. I hope this helps, thank you for watching. If you’ve any other questions let me know. Have fun 👍

@@PaintySniffers hardener to the paint? I thought just clearing over the pinstripe would seal the deal. Im working on my motorcycle tank and added gold leaf after wetsanding the clearcoat again. I plan on clearing it after pinstriping the goldleaf edges
@PaintySniffers
@PaintySniffers 7 месяцев назад
Clearing over 1shot can be tricky, it’s an enamel (oil based paint) and can wrinkle up under the clear coat. Anything that I need clearing over I use a little hardener in it and leave to fully cure for a week (or longer if I can), then a few “dust coats” of clear and leaving to dry before hitting it with a wet coat. It’s solvents in the clear that does it.

@PaintySniffers 3 года назад
Hi, the panel in this video is Alupanel, it's a sign making material. Most sign supply shops should be able to supply you some. Any old car panel or painted panel should be good for practicing on, it really doesn't matter that much as long as paint sticks to it, it's smooth and you can hold it still. I hope this answers your question? Thank you for watching. Stay safe, have fun and Merry Christmas 👍

How long does it take to fully dry?
@PaintySniffers
@PaintySniffers 7 месяцев назад
Depends on temperature and humidity but normally touch dry in about an hour and fully cured in a few days to a week. If you’re painting on leather it can take forever to dry. There are different reducers and additives that can speed up or slow down drying as well. I know right, loads of stuff and no definite answer to your question, really sorry about that. Thank you for watching and taking time to comment, it really is appreciated.

@@PaintySniffers I was having my new 4Runner pin-striped with 3 colors (yellow/orange/red) - slightly wider stripes in a straight line down each side of the vehicle. Just curious how long it needs to typically dry. He was painting one color strip per day - so will have my vehicle for 4 days.

Talk to your pinstriper and ask about drying times and aftercare, they’ll let you know. I personally recommend using a good quality wax after about a week, not a polish. Thank you for supporting your local pinstriper and getting the job done properly.

Is that a 1 inch grid you're using?
@PaintySniffers
@PaintySniffers 4 года назад
No, it's just a centre line with a vertical line either side of it about 1.5-2 inches out and a couple of horizontal lines for reference. I don't like a complete grid, too much pencil to clean up after you've done painting. Most of the time I'll just use a single centre line or nothing at all. Thank you for watching and commenting.
