In this video we cover How To Plan an EV Road trip. I discuss all the tools we use to plan our EV Road trip. We discuss using the Rivian app (only works for Rivian vehicles), we discuss how to use A Better Route Planner ABRP, I discuss my A Better Route Planner ABRP settings for towing our travel trailer, and I also cover using Plug Share to analyze the chargers on our route. I analyze charging stations for reliability, available amenities nearby, and layout which is important when towing a travel trailer.

Thanks very much. This is very helpful. One frustrating thing is that in the R1 vehicle navigation screen, the charge network preferences don't work. In other words, if you try to use the in-vehicle navigation system rather than the Rivian phone app to plan your charging stops, it will select the charging networks it likes rather that the charging networks that you like. Thanks again for the very helpful information.

I would have loved to see approaches to planning round-trip road trips - like to and from a college football game in the same day. How to plan for the situation where there is nowhere to charge at the destination, etc.

Hi Scott excellent questions. You can save your plans in ABRP so in the case of a round trip I would suggest saving that as two plans. They can easily be loaded back into ABRP for the trip to your destination and back. On the issue of no charging at the destination two things. 1) use PlugsShare to identify chargers near the destination or to find lodging with EV charging on site. 2) You could also increase the destination arrival soc so that instead of arriving at your destination with 10% battery you could arrive with 40-50% or however much you choose.

@@ElectrifiedOutdoors Thanks for the response. Does it make sense to just put home->dest->home into the route? I’m not sure if I can specify arrival and departure SOC such that it gives me budget to drive around the destination.

You can do that but it doesn't account, like you say, for any driving you do around your destination. It will also show totals for the entire trip (maybe that's what you want). I prefer to plan them separately and then when I pull up my plans for the return trip I adjust the battery state of charge to match what I have and replan. If you do it as a round trip it will not account for this. Hope this helps.
