I used to play snow hey ohh, i can tell u that it's not that hard, and also Johns Mayer neon, it's a bit tricky the first week but it gets you if u do the right things
Yeah, it can be daunting for us pick-only players, but hopefully by now you mastered it! I already knew how to slap on bass, but even then i still have difficulty with slap guitar. I am learning this ( and Mr. Fujita's other Funk Lessons) just to improve my muting and rhythm techniques, and hopefully be able to tackle Animals as Leaders.
Tomo, I just found out that you taught my guitar teacher at Berklee. He told me you were an amazing teacher, and i fully agree. You’re an incredibly skilled teacher and musician.
I love the way you demonstrate the final piece first. Then you break it down, step by step, start slow and gradually build up the speed. I love your expertise and your passion. But most of all I love the way you inspire me. Your comment that limitation is the key to possibilities struck a chord with me. You are a fantastic teacher. Thank you :)KD
Tomo is the real deal Guitar Teacher. There are tons of similar lessons on RU-vid, but only the way he teaches makes me really understand and actually do it. A real teacher indeed.
I like what you said about the limitations of players and how this can drive creativity to work around them. There have been so many players that tried to play in a certain way/style/technique and by failing to master that approach developed their own style of playing. So rather than to be discouraged one should simply try to find ones own way how to do it and see where this takes one.....great lesson !
I didn't think I'd be successful at this, but I think I'm starting to get it! :) I can guarantee that I didn't wake up today intending to learn the basics of slap guitar, but I'm glad I did. It's fun. I took your direction to hit the edge of the fretboard too literally, and bruised my thumb joint trying to get the thumb slap sound, lol. It's a similar motion as playing a thumb note on a djembe. Hope your daughter is doing well with her guitar practice too.
Thank you very much for this lesson, Tomo. My favorite guitar player and the person who inspired me to learn how to play the guitar is Miyavi. His slap technique is crazy and I’ve always wanted to play like him. I’ve played 15 years of guitar and I’m finally getting around to learning this technique!
If it weren't for artists finding creative ways around their limitations, we would never have gotten to experience the singular beauty of a BB King vibrato.
I'm floored by this demo and instruction on slap guitar. Mr. Fujita, you continually step out and surpass the other guitar instructors on RU-vid. Very creative, adventurous, and different from so many other tutorials on YT. Again, thank you for this excellent instruction!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, I wanted to learn bass for a while, but I only have an electric guitar available for now. This video is excellent for what I'm trying to achieve. Thank you and wish you alot of musical inspiration. :)
Tomo, thanks for your direction to this video today, it answered all my questions. Lot's of right hand work which is not coming naturally to me. Woodshed time!
Never thought the super cool slapping will be this easy. I always thought it is a hard technique and always avoided to learn it. But somehow I just gave it a go today watching this tutorial and wow it just took me 40 minutes to learn it. Arigato Sensei. And also I don't have an electric guitar, I learned it on a Classical Guitar. So classical guitarists don't get offended 😂
Thank you so much for putting this out.. A friend recommand me one of your practice routine videos and i became a fan of yours from there one.. Love all your videos!! Greetings from Germany

Thanks for pointing me over to this video Tomo! I still have many, many more of your lessons to visit, that's for sure! I don't think it was your channel that I first saw someone slapping a guitar... though maybe it was. The gentleman was talking about seeing Victor Wooten slapping on a bass and working very hard until they were able to do something similar on the guitar! Absolutely amazing!
I believed the naysayers that I couldn't art! Now i draw, write Python computer code and play guitar! Gave up in 1979 after a theft of my guitars, couldn't afford to replace them. Very informative lessons in life through guitar! Believe in yourself! Thank you Tomo for Your valuable time, we will!!!
one thing I've noticed while trying to learn the slapping technique is that the angle of your thumb when you're hitting the string can change how clear and loud the slap is. Of course I'm still a beginner to this, and don't know how much that will affect after mastering the the technique.
Gonna have to come back to this one. I don't know if it's that my pickup is right up against the neck but I couldn't do this without hurting myself lol. Thank you Tomo
Not sure if this will help you at all, but I bruised my thumb joint at first hitting the side of the fretboard. Lol. Make sure you're practicing through whatever you're using for an amp. I usually practice unplugged, but I needed to plug in, to get the right sounds. Practice the thumb hit lightly at first and just try to hit the string. Adjust your angle a bit if needed. I'm getting best results by hitting the string above my thumb joint a little bit, between the joint and the tip. (Not sure if that's wrong, but it seems to be working for me.) Your left hand should be light ly muting everything but the E.
I had an album in the early 80s I learned a bassline that used this. Was from fusion band Caldera. Nice fills and stuff. Thanks again all the posts, really great man! This was my Bday present. A bass lesson really, I like to look at them too! on acoustic its not really possible, I get most harmonic sound.
Great video! Thank you so much for all the effort you put on making these videos. As a request I would like to see some more theory lessons applied on guitar just like the two you have already done. Thanks again. Cheers
Hey Tomo, you always accomadate!! You're so clear in your teachings that after watching this I get it, but I don't know how long it'll take to play it? The keys are the hitting the fretboard and the muting , the hitting with the knuckles and the plucking and hammer on. Then it's a matter of practicing! It reminds me of slap/pluck bass guitar like John Entwistle from The Who. In some respects but there are probably better examples in the funk world, I love all GOOD music really! I'm reminded of what the great Duke Ellington said (I'm paraphrasing but something close to this) "There are only 2 kinds of music, good music... and that other stuff." 😂 I love that one and John Raitt , Bonnie Raitts father said the 2 kinds of music were "Zippidy Doo Dah and the Blues" , I love that one too. I guess it's obvious but it's like saying either happy, silly songs or deeper sadder songs. That's how I take it anyway. I love this challenge but I don't know about a week for me. Not to compare but it's not in my comfort zone and I don't feel so bad if John couldn't get it down 😂 it may cause me to derive something else from it! I love how you smile thinking about John saying to your kids who were younger at the time "That's a Tomo song" Of course you should be proud of teaching John and it's so nice to think of this big show and your kids watching it and then after having him acknowledge you... heartwarming story. I really love that you include those kinds of things in the lesson videos. So nice. This is probably going to take time for me, I couldn't play for the last few days and I have to get my finger strength and dexterity back again! I had some minor health stuff that made it impossible to play (my back, I had a surgery and even though it was more than a year ago once in a while it's painful to sit up... doesn't happen often and usually because I did something wrong, but I'm much better today and feeling relieved and happy!!) I'm late commenting too, but I watched everything you put out while I was "laid up" and I'm curious. That guitar with the frets at an angle above the 12th fret that you played...I'm assuming someone thought it would fit the angle of the hand better. Since you weren't playing above 12, I was wondering if you could confirm that that's why, and if it really is a better feel in the hand or does it feel confusing? Probably you get used to it but is it better? Looks like it would give me problems, my fingers know where to go a little bit now right, I think it would confuse them. Maybe even you at first, but I'm pretty sure you could adjust. Either way it looks weird but in a cool way! Glad to be back and all the best to you and your family!! 🎸🎶✌️❤️🙏
Yes, there are two kinds of music! I love good music! Good people! Please enjoy! No pressure! Something you cannot do is a beautiful thing! I love imperfection so much! Thank you so much! I will cook next lesson videos!
@@TomoFujitaMusic You'll cook? Count me in! Maybe you can put the recipe in the comments section! 😂 Yes, imperfections are a big part of music right? I mean you see Jimmy Page or Jeff Beck, Hendrix... whomever. When it's improvised their can't be a "perfect version" it's all those little nuances that make it so authentic and real! Nowadays with autotuned voices many producers try to make it perfect. Even if the singer cannot sing in key they can fix it. I don't disapprove if it's like Cher and her song Believe because she CAN really sing and it's an effect like reverb or echo, but yes imperfection. Like with Persian rugs, there so beautiful but they purposely leave an imperfection for spiritual reasons. To signify that we're human and can't be perfect. I play right thru mistakes or I'd never finish playing anything 😂 What's that thing Charlie Parker said about bad notes? There's no bad notes, you just play the next notes to MAKE it good and all the notes can fit. It's not an exact quote but it's close to the essence of what he was saying. If you make a pizza Tomo, remember to put the crust on the bottom! (Unless it's a second inversion triad pizza 😂) You're so much fun, such a good feeling to be back feeling well and talking to you man! My pleasure and my honor always! 🎸🎶✌️❤️🙏
One of my favourite guitar slappers is Jag Tanna from I Mother Earth. Check out there tune basketball 🏀 from there album dig. Insanely awesome. Thanks Tomo you rock. 😎✌️🎸🎶🇨🇦
