Perfect! I obtained an ostrich egg shell and wanted to see how to prepare it for pysanka. It is so massive and shiny and I know that’s not conductive for dying it properly.

Hi, I've been doing ostrich eggs for many many years, and the first one I didn't even know to remove the shine. Those eggs came out just fine. Since then I've been removing the shine with The Works Toilet Bowl cleaner. These eggs come out just fine. Some folks do sand their eggs, and their eggs come out just fine. So, I'd have to say it's up to each artist and if they want or need to do any of these steps. There's no right or wrong way, just whats works best for you.

Your work is amazing! I want to learn to do this as well as carving eggs. Such a beautiful artform. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge. I know what I'm doing for the rest of the day (watching all your vids) ;)

Thank you Claire. Yes, using an paint brush to apply the hot wax to large areas is much easier, and faster than using a kistka.

As seen in the video I use The Works Tpilet Bowl Cleaner, and you can see how long it actually takes to clean the egg. Some sand their eggs, and others clean and sand their eggs, each of us have to find what works best for us. I'm just showing the way I clean my eggs. There are many others ways, try them all and see which one you like best. Hugs, Lorrie

I love your work, Lorrie! I’ve learned so much from watching your videos. Thank you for sharing them! I’m about to do my first ostrich egg! What do you use to plug the hole?

No Lori the design was just put together as I was working on the egg. The only planned out area was the wavy white area. This egg was for a 50th anniversary, and the husband wanted certain words around the egg. If you watch all my videos you find a beginner's one that will help you get started.

It seems that you use The Works to clean other eggs, do you use it for cleaning chicken, duck and goose eggs too? Does it help duck eggs take dye evenly? Some of my duck eggs seem to resist dye in some areas and I've never figured out why. And some take the dye in very strange ways. thanks.

Lorrie, I think I'll just start with pencil lines. (After I clean it.) Pencil lines aren't too scary!! HAHA! Thanks for your response!

Hi Lori, I am a big fan! Does the works reduce the pits ' size as well? I have done 2 O-eggs, but found they were very pitted. I have another two ready to go, but would like them to be smoother this go-Round.

Susanna. no if you want the ostrich egg smooth you will need to sand it smooth. Thank you for watching my videos.

Lorrie, do you not sand the shell at all? I have seen others sand only. I was thinking of using works to take the shine off and then sanding to smooth out the dimples a bit. But it looks here like you aren't doing any sanding at all. I would love to skip sanding if possible. But wondering if I need to take off more than just the shine and dirt.

Hi Lori! I recently got an ostrich egg and used the works but it seems I can't get the shine to come off fully. Does the egg ever get fully matte? How long do you need to wash the egg with the works to make it matte?
@LorriePopow
@LorriePopow 6 лет назад
Most of the shine should come off. With that said in the past we didn't bother to take the shine off, but found that if there was less shine the dyes took faster. To get it to a full matte, I would think you might have to sand the egg. I don't get too fussy about removing the shine. I go over the ever with a tooth brush and an etching solution then I rinse the egg. Before I put the egg into a dye I first get it wet in straight vinegar.

Beautiful work, Lorrie! I would like to know what type of "heater" you used to heat the wax you used with the paint brush. Been doing Pysanky since my grandmother taught me, about 50 years ago!

Thank you Mark. I use a Melting Pot, it's called la petite warmer. I purchased it at Sally's Beauty Supply. I believe a candle warmer will work too. Thank you for watching my videos.

What brand of dye do you use? I have been having some trouble getting a nice bright yellow on my ostrich eggs. I can get it on a chicken or duck egg, but I can't seem to get the yellow as bright on an ostrich egg.

Hi Anna, I first make sure all the shine and gunk has been removed from my ostrich egg shells. I do this by using The Works Toilet Bowl cleaner. And, before I put my egg into the yellow dye I put the egg into straight vinegar. As for what dyes I use: I like Pysanky Showcase's Brilliant dyes, I still like Ukrainian Gift Shop dyes, and I like Wax Art Supply dyes. However, from these suppliers I like certain colors from each. Hopefully I've been of some help. Thank you for watching my videos.

lorrie , how many minutes do you leave the "works" on the eggshell just to prepare it,. (not have it etched). And.... how many minutes do you put it in vinegar? and How long do you dye in the YELLOW color? thank you for your help.
@LorriePopow
@LorriePopow 10 лет назад
With smaller eggs it a matter of seconds that you have the solution of The Works on the eggshell. You don't leave the egg in The Works. You get the egg wet and rub the grime off, then rinse The larger thicker shells can be in the solution a bit longer, but again this is just to get the gunk off the shell. With the vinegar you just want to egg to get wet with vinegar. You can leave the shell in the vinegar for a bit, but the purpose is just to get it wet. Now about how long you leave the shell in the yellow dye depends how the shell is taking the dye, and what shade of yellow you are trying get.

Forgot to mention that I've had 2 ostrich eggs for years trying to get up the nerve to do something with them. The have shallow divots all over the shells. Is there a way to smooth out the shells? Drawing lines would be a wavy affair if the surfaces aren't smooth.
@LorriePopow
@LorriePopow 10 лет назад
Karen if you've worked on other egg sizes you'll do fine. The ostrich egg just has more surface so it takes a bit more time. Some folks sand their eggs, so far I haven't. I don't find that the dips make one's work look wavy, but lets folks see that the work was actually done on an ostrich egg. Each artist likes to work on different surfaces, so you'll need to decide which will work best for you. Hugs, Lorrie

If I make egg gusy empty after I paint is ok? Thank you for explain , I paint 9 eggs with brosh and is like new art,bcos i dont have this kiska.KISS
@LorriePopow

Totoliciu Areta Ildiko If you paint with dyes you would need to protect the dyes and artwork by either dipping the egg in wax to cover unprotected areas or you can varnish the egg to protect the dyed artwork. Then it's safe to drain the egg from the eggshell. You can contact Wax Art Supply (look for the site that has something about kistka or pysanky), here you can buy different size kistkas.
