How to Quickly Revive a Rusty Beater Gun

I picked up a $50 beater gun at an auction that had clearly been left in a basement or in a truck and had some rust issues and some nasty shit on the stock that made it look terrible. Rather than clean the gun up I decided to make a video of how I clean up abused guns when I get them.
The trick when buying or selling a gun is to try to guess what shape it will be in after cleaning. When selling you want to get the gun as good looking as possible to get the most out of it. When buying you can hope the seller was lazy and sold the gun in a condition like this one that you can easily take care of with 20 minutes and a bit of elbow grease.
The main issues with this Remington 581 is that it's got plenty of surface rust which we need to remove with oil and abrasion. And the stock has some white scaly substance on it which feels and looks nasty so we need to buff it off and see how the finish underneath looks.
The gun also needs a few spare parts but now that we know how it looks under the rust and grime I feel it will be worth tracking them down.
You can use the same basic process to cleanup old heirloom guns that you get from family or beaters like this one that you might find at a pawn shop or auction.
I would avoid using this process on anything truly old or expensive like WWII or older military guns or pre 1900 Colt or Winchester revolvers/rifles as collector value is often tied to having the original patina on older guns.

Old Timer here: l’m 81 yrs. young and by the the grace of God still healthy enough to enjoy restoring the old single shot 22’s and shotguns that I grew up with and love and appreciate. Excellent video. Thanks for showing what a little effort can do for a great old gun. They are so much fun to own and shoot and I find it very rewarding to bring one back to life and put it back in action. Keep up the great work. Maybe you can inspire some else to appreciate these great old pieces of the history of our sport! God bless.

Even with the messed up finish that is one of the nicest stocks I've seen on a old 22 like that.

It is good to see that you have preserved the original stock finish, you have just removed the dirt , some people sand and re finish the stocks and ruin a vintage gun regards from Australia

3 years ago I was offered a 581. Of course, I bought it. After a couple trips to the range despite it's age, 1972, I realized that this fine rifle hadn't even shot enough to even "break it in". I went out and got a bunch of different ammo to find what ammo this rifle shoots the best. Now, I've put two bricks of ammo through it and it's shooting even better than when I first starting taking it to the range. Head shots on squirrels and rabbits out to a hundred yards done easily. The rifle gets cleaned as soon as I'm back home, every time. You'll never go hungry with a .22rf, a lot of ammo in a very small spot. With the right ammo extremely accurate. Something to think about......A .22rf is deadly out farther than the average person can shoot accurately. With simple practice maybe a bit farther. With a .22 you can afford a lot of practice at a reasonable cost. Knocking around tin cans and golf balls with a 22 is just plain FUN. See Ya At The Range. Yes, you guessed it. I really like my 581s.

I have the 582 (tube). Your gun has the best wood I ever seen on any 581or582. Awesome find. Mine is very red but it’s mint. Love it and won’t take a million for it.

I do basically the same thing. Use steel wool and oil to lightly buff off the surface rust, then I will wipe down the the barrel and receiver with oil. Lastly I rub in some boiled linseed oil into the stock if it feels dried out. It keeps the guns looking original and clean.

you mentioned that the bolt is different that most any 22 rifle bolt. That is and understatement. This six locking lug bolt is a very very special bolt being designed for a much more powerful cartridge the 5mm Remingtion that never made it to the sales room to compete with the Winchester 22 magnum round. That is only one thing about this bolt. The Lock time of this bolt is like 600 mil-a-second making it one of the fastest lock times if not THE fastest lock time of any rifle bolt made. "Lock Time" is the time the trigger is pulled to the time the firing pin strikes the cartridge to fire. the faster the lock time the more accurate the rifle will be on a target. Where the locking lugs are located is far back into the reciever letting the bolt head release tension on the round as it locks to the back of it, This lets the round seak its own center position in the bore make the rifle more accurate as well. This is a very special bolt indeed. These rifles 580,581,582 and the 541s are almost always the most accurate rifles you will every shoot 22 out of.

Do you stay with the 1-action screw or add a second action screw and bed so barrel is free floating? Also any suggestions for lighten the 5-6lb trigger pull? Thanks.

It's amazing how little effort some people will put in before selling a gun. I does need a few bucks worth of parts but once it's complete it will be worth at least $100 more than I have invested.

Whenever I have to deal with scuzzy wood, I use 4 / 0 steel wool which I first rub in a can of paste wax. Neutral shoe polish paste wax works fine and is readily available. The steel wool smooths out the rough spots, and the wax rejuvenates the finish. It's very similar to the process you used on the barrel to remove the rust, but using paste wax. Numrich Arms can probably supply the parts you need. Have fun.

Thanks for the video.. I've said the same thing many times over the years. Some people are lazy and simple won't put any effort in something they're selling. I'm into motorcycles as well and have got some very good deals because someone thought something was bad or ruined.. when it just needed some TLC.

Chris try a wire wheel with .005 wire, don't cringe these do not leave any drag marks but do remove rust and make blueing look better. An 8" wheel with .005 wire on a grinder requires eye protection and the wires tend to break when they thin so don't get these near invisible bits in your foot, they will find a nerve. Muratic acid works well on corroded bores. It removes blueing so tape off the muzzle. Rinse with water afterwards. Get your old lever action that shoots 6" to shoot 3" or less. Amazing what it removes. I've used commercial bore cleaners and brushes etc. until I got a clean cloth. Used the acid and was amazed at the gunk it removed and the improved accuracy.

Remington 581 has a good accuracy reputation. Unfortunately the trigger is not adjustable. You can mount scope rings directly on the dovetail on the receiver. Usually a recrowning job also helps improve accuracy and is worth the investment. The Remington 581 stock originally was a birch stock. With one action screw, typically the barrel is not free-floated, but the action and barrel channel can be glass bedded. Or add a second action screw and free-float the barrel.

Steel wool is even WORSE for wood! Use a 3M sanding product, available in many different grit options. Learned this from an heirloom furniture restorer.

Use a penetrant like mineral spirits is used for cleaning or hopes number 9 is a solvent . Hardly use any oil cuz it gets into the wood after years and years and causes the wood to crack . Best thing is to put them away wiped with an old flannel shirt with mineral spirits and mineral oil is actually the best oil to use . It’s all mineral oil and mineral spirits with someone else’s name on it selling it as something else , lol.

A "Big 45" cleaning pad is MUCH safer and better than steel wool. Would never use steel wool on a blued gun. It can remove the bluing.

The sights are around but there is 5 different parts so places want $60-100 for a complete sight assembly. The mags are around for $15 but they are plastic. The older metal ones are expensive and hard to find.

@Jeff Scuderi Like I said, totally new news here. I know of 6-7 other people with the old 788 and they've never had a problem. I will say the only problem I have had is with the safety. It's way to easy for it to be bumped off and pushing lightly releases the bolt and have the bolt fall completely out.Had it only happen once, when I was 12.Had to back track about a mile to find it.After that,I took better care of making sure it didn't happen again..lol
