Radio repair and restoration Model 5808 with 8-S-463 Chassis. In this video we will discus "How to read and understand the proper connections for Electrolytic Capacitors on Schematic" so be able to repair it. Antique Wooden radios are the most beautiful radios in my opinion. Their style are so unique an interesting, still you can find them very reasonable prices.
Modern radios trends come and go. In contrast, antiques radios are always in style. They hold a special place in history that no modern piece can compete with. They always have been and always be in high demand. We will discuss how to repair Vintage Zenith console tube radio.

JZ, I have learned so much form you. You explain things so clear and effective that the new person without electronic background can understand and not get overwhelmed. I watched other RU-vid channels and was so confused since their presentation is focused on individual with electronic background. Thank you so much for taking your valuable time making these videos.

I am happy and glad that you enjoy watching and learning. Thank you very much! I really appreciate your time taking time to send me such an uplifting comment. I am doing this as a hobby with no electronic background, trying my best to create detailed videos to encourage others without electronic background that are new to this hobby so they can understand and not get overwhelmed. So happy to know that is working for you. Have a good day! Regards, JZ

With this design of radio a power transformer with a center tap line it is the common return or negative side called B- . You were supposed to know that if you ever learn about radios back then. Yes it helps to read up on radio design which is VERY important by the way and how to read schematic diagrams which sometimes have errors in them like missing values or with diodes in a circuit they might be labeled in reverse. Caught a few schematics in my time with a reversed symbol for a rectifier diode! Some radios have the chassis as ground (as this radio) but is totally separate from the B-. When mounting the new electrolytic capacitor it is a good idea to mount the values facing towards the opening of the bottom so you see the values plainly as you did Jay. Thanks for sharing this with those who may be new to this kind of repair work.

Hi Steve, happy new year to you my friend. Thank you for bringing that to my attention, I have learned so much from you and other subscriber who have strong knowledge about this. I wished that I had a mentor like you when I got started. I could not find anyone to teach me, it was so frustrating to learn it on my own. My first radio I keep looking under the chassis for over 6 month before had courage to start on it and was another 4 to 5 month could finally fix it. Years later when I got comfortable with it decided to start this RU-vid channel to pass along what I have learned so far to assist others with no electronic background who just got started or interested in this absolutely great hobby. I absolutely appreciate any feedback that can assist those of us who want to learn and do better. Have a great day Steve. Regards, Jay

I have had my channel since 2009 and just now getting close to 1000 subscribers so you have done a lot better than me Jay. Yes indeed always want to check that polarity on that electrolytic or I did reverse one time and Kapow! So polarity is very important. Restuffing the cap is dome by most radio restorers to keep it looking original. All really great work Jay. You are doing great. I would like to see what vehicle you are going to restore sometime.

Hi Larry, thank you for such uplifting message. It is so nice of you taking time to leave me a comments. I wish we both could make some money doing this. RU-vid has tons of add on our videos and making money but they do not want to let go some of it.. LOL. The most important thing is that we enjoy doing this and having fun. As soo as I finish this radio will start uploaded videos on my car. You can see a picture of it on my channel introductory video. Have a great weekend my friend!

I could not see clearly in past videos what was the glue you were using! I just purchased some Aleene"s Tacky Glue, 16oz bottle at Walmart, very inexpensive, I like that it will dry clear.. I have collected a lot of products that you and others have used over the years.. Normally I have used WD40 or 3 in 1 machine oil, but recently got hold of some Zoom Sewing Machine Oil, and that does a great job with its unique spout to get into very tight spaces.. It pernitrate's far better then the other 2... Great explanation on capacitors, things beginners to your videos should learn and understand.. Good Job Robert

Hi Robert, glad that you bought Aleene's Tacky Glue. I am very happy with it that glue and as you know I use it for everything. LOL. Great idea to use Sewing Machine Oil, I have some and definitely will use some of them. I bought Sewing Machine to make some the interior for my 1974 car, planning to make a prototype first to see if I can do it. What can I say I like the challenge I guess. LOL. Thank you for always be so supportive and leaving such a great comments. Have a great weekend my friend. Regards, Jay

Good suggestions Jay. Believe it or not I cannot recall a schematic which does not identify E cap polarities. Not saying it does not happen, and you obviously found one, but I'm thinking it's pretty rare when it does happen. One thing I always do when I buy a new radio to work on I gather all the service documentation I can find while waiting for the radio to arrive. Many times I find that not all the various schematic producers make mistakes. Use all the clues you have for determining which one is correct. Original wiring is usually a pretty good clue unless it has obviously been altered. :)

Hi Doug, thank you for such uplifting message. It is so nice of you taking time to leave me a comments. This darn radio schematic forced me to get better reading schematic.. LOL. Was no tube pin number on schematic as well, glad that I had a book to figure that one.. LOL. Was confused since they had Meg on schematic and was not sure if that was Meg or K, but after checking resistor colors then I knew they were Meg. have a great weekend my friend.
