IN THIS EPISODE WE REBUILD THE REAR CALIPERS ON THIS 1985 TO 1982 RX7 CONVERSION PROJECT. I TAKE YOU THROUGH THE COMPLETE TEAR DOWN AND REBUILD OF THESE CALIPERS AND SHOW HOW COMPLICATED THEY ARE IN COMPARISON TO REGULAR BRAKES.
A TOTAL OF 3 DAYS OF CLEANING, SANDBLASTING AND PAINTING ENDED UP WITH SOME REALLY SOLID RESULTS! CANNOT WAIT FOR THE NEXT PROJECT!

Kudos to you for this video-- the mod at 16:00 that shows making a tool to collapse the spring washers in the vice was brilliant and exactly what I needed to make for a smooth reassembly. Thanks again!

@@keen0515 I had made a tool from a peg board hook. Made a perfect 'U' and placed it in the vice 👍

Nice vid. Theres not a lot of first gen rx7 videos so this is helpful. Also Mazdatrix & Racing beat have a lot of first gen rx7 parts.

Glad you like the video! I was in the same boat when i bought the car. If i can help anyone then its totally worth it 👍 I have ordered from them both but the issue is Im located in Canada so the exchange is not that great as well as the shipping times.

Question why wouldn’t you use your sandblaster if the calipers were aluminum just wondering I have sandblasted intakes with no problems maybe you’re worried about the inside bore ? I would just tape it up really good! Good video 👍🏻 I saw it so I watched it ! Lol

Hey Dan! The blast media I bought for the cabinet initially would have been very abrasive to Aluminum and would have likely ruined the finish of the caliper. Typically walnut shell or something less abrasive would have been best. In this case I was lucky the caliper and brackets were cast 😁👍 taping of the bore is essential for sure, this stuff gets everywhere 🤣

Looking good I'm assuming you going -se front hubs and spindal aswell since the rear will now have a different bolt pattern?

Thanks! You are right, big change in performance and wheel selection. Itll be 4x114.3 from the SE conversion 👍 Thatll be next!

Pretty lucky to find an SE doner for sure. I'm 4x114 as well but with 1" adapters. So I'm stuck with more of a FWD offset wheels.

@@MrSchnarr You couldn't be more right! I was almost giving up on the car and had it up for sale at one point.. Then the parts car just appeared two years later.. Just a very lucky guy :D I didnt even have the money to buy it but just made it work. Thats a bit of a bummer for sure, especially when these cars look so good with deep wheels! Perhaps a parts car will come your way too!

Nice job, I know it takes a lot of extra time to record your work. Your rebuild kit looked like a good one, was it is a special grease you used to lube the pistons and rubber parts?

Thank you! It was a high heat bearing type grease. Thick enough to keep that little pin in place while sliding in the lever 👍

And almost forgot.. for the piston I used just a bit of brake fluid. It is thin enough to have it slide really nicely

Question! is the GSL Rear end lighter than the 84 85 GSL ? I'm gonna say yes. I know the bearings are smaller.

Hey hey! I would say yes as well. If the bearings are smaller then the axles would be too saving you a bit of weight. 👍

@@RustedandBusted I'm a bit obsessed with getting the weight down on my GS. But I want to keep it original inside and not stripped. I think I'm down to 975 kg or so. I never did weight it.

Thats insane! I had deleted my rear dust cover for the brake line and Im sure that saved me a few lbs as well :) If I can get a scale up at the shop Ill try to weigh the complete unit and pass that along. My GS one will be tossed Im sure so maybe i can do a segment on that with the weights of both in a few months
