When you have a bolt that is stuck, use a 50/50 mix of acetone and atf (automatic transmission fluid). Put it in an oiler can and shake before each use. Works great and saves a trip to the machine shop.
That buildup around the exhaust valve in the head is from overheated or bad oil. Most of the heat in the head is on the exhaust side. A good example of why its important to change your oil.
Looks like it should run . Not to say the way you laped your valves isn't good the way I've done em especially on a old head I take some fuel line with a drill and a bit works pretty good too. Can't wait to hear it run!
I have a GX390 with the stage 1 kit Air filter, Loop exhaust, and 50 valve spring The valve lash is.006 and .008. The recoil has super high compression and does not want to pull over.
Great video as always, looked like the engine side cover bearing may have failed on you and caused all the metal shavings, i noticed in the video the crank surface that rides in the side cover bearing looked alittle rough, i believe the culprit was the side cover bearing locking up or spinning.
While you have the head off you should port it. Also, you should have the machine shop deck it. BTW, the plugs to go with on these engines are the autolite's, not NGK.
Luke DeCarlo auto lites suck but the racing autolight has absolutely been my fav plug. I tried an ngk and my 212 ran like shit. Call me crazy but I will never put an ngk in a small engine again. My turbo car yes I like ngk
TI believe the reason you are having problems with the valve clearance changing when you torque the locknut is because you have it bassackwards. The outer nut is the locknut not the inner nut.
Red Beard, I have a gx270 and I want to install the large carburetor from the 390 on to it. Go Power Sports sells the air filter Performance Kit for the 301 401 predators. For the jet selection you should pick the one for the 401 carburetor.? They offer a jet for the 301 or 401 as a selection.
You said to “ get yourself a cheap predator to experiment on”. So what if instead I didn’t do that and bought a custom casted 72mm small block and then also bought a stage 3 head and then accidentally bought 1.2 ratio rockers with a GPS 285 cam and a 59mm stroker crank? It my first build so I made sure to get every single billet part I could afford..side cover included. I now have to build to all up and put it in my Mudstar200 so I can take that 196 and make it into a long stoke monster for my daughters blown 105cc monster moto replacement. Any advise?? 😂😂
Nice! I got a gx240 low hours, what are your recommendations for mikuni carb size and do I need the flywheel key advanced 8° or what degree? Thanks love You're channel.
Did you replace the rings in this project and if not why? If you went so far as to hone the cylinder, it seems like new rings would be best option, especially with some marking...right??? I'm new to this whole small engine thing and just picked up 2 running GX340s for a mud motor project. About to embark on the process of "cleaning" up the bit more used and abused engine and replacing anything that might leak. Have been thinking that I want to do a full governor delete and while I'm in the crankcase. Just curios if I find similar issues as you are showing, what is my best course of action while I'm already in there??? And input is appreciated.
Is there any way you could do a video of you boring out the motor on little red 2.0? I know the go powers sports upgrades do alot but there is only so much power that little piston can make... is there anyway you could do a video of a bored out predator?
Red Beard's Garage like on a predator or a regular motor? Also you should really talk to gopowersports and convince them to make a transmission like a shifting transmission for the motors.
Read beard. My latest project has been putting a 212 on a four wheeler EXACTLY like your sons. The engine fits perfectly except for the muffler. Would it be ok to give the muffler a "gentle message" with a hammer if you know what I mean by that. Just so it will fit
I was gonna tare down my 301cc ..and drill holes in the flywheel to lighten it . .does it have casted tabs ..or does it have the plastic bolt on fins for the fan
hey brother it might be a little late but if you run it nice and hard for a minute get it nice and hot it almost five fall right out for you good luck brother I like your videos they teach me a little bit I'm pretty smart as far as changing to go every little bit helps all right brother
Great video. Getting ready to rebuild two GX270 myself. Did you fabricate the 8 degree timing key for the flywheel or purchase? Noticed it was not listed in the thread. Thanks!
Do you have a specific website you buy from? Just bought a Coleman 100cc 3hp. Don't know anything about small engines and it seems a lot is rusted on the engine.
Would you "or anybody" know if a gx270 clone cylinder head assembly will fit any gx270 clone? I have one branded "gxi outdoor power" and cant find anything by yhe numbers on the engine. I was hoping to just get 270 clone head off ebay or something.
Red Beard's Garage I'm just getting into this kinda stuff. And I'm looking to work on my stuff. I see that you've used mostly easy to obtain tools to rebuild that engine. Is there any tips you could give to watch out for when working on small engines? TIA
I have a question I have a 6500watt generator and the exaust is going out the carb while running.the timing is rite the crank shaft has a regular lifter for the intake and the exaust has a smaller lifter for the exaust..what do you think
Lol if your building it yourself there is never a budget. If you want to do something on a budget buy it used. There's a difference between Built not Bought
What would you estimate the time involved to strip a gx motor, remove the governor, and rebuild with performance parts? For a experienced small engine mechanic, which I am not, so would be hiring someone to do the work. On the east coast of Canada and a high performance gx270 Honda snowblower sounds like fun. Not looking for a screamer, more a solid reliable build that can be ran at full throttle and still last for years. Any recommendations on max RPM for long term reliability ?
Hey Red Beard , i'm currently about to rebuild a gx270 clone which started life as a generator , i have ordered a new crankshaft to replace the original but the question i want to ask is " can i re-use the magneto from the generator " it's a 27 pole stator with 9 different wires coming out of it ? i havent seemed to find out anything about it and havent seen any other stator with 9 wires on it . any help or advice would be awesome . ps your vids are the reason ive decided to have a go a a rebuild for a mini bike and worse case scenario i will just buy another flywheel magneto. thanks and keep making your vids!!
What's your opinion gx270 vs gx 390 I know more torque power but I'm guessing weight to power ratio the 270 ain't no slouch where maybe weight is an issue?
hello! i would like to build a gokart and i almost got all of the tools i need, but i got some questions. what material should i use for the frame? steel? aluminum? or another option? oh and i also need a engine! i really want a predator 212 but i live in europe so its really hard to find a good priced engine that runs well(like the predator). do have any "backup engines you would consider as a good engine for the money? -Cappy:)
Any clue where I can find a set of valves for a predator 301cc Hemi? I ordered a direct replacement but it was too small I'm assuming that is because it was for a regular 301 but I'm honestly kind of lost I need to put this back together soon so I can get riding
I'm New to small engines, my predator 79cc given to me by a friend has milky oil, I've torn it down completely but never done a rebuild, what is your diagnosis my friend, point me towards what parts I need!👍🏻👊🏻😎
@@RedBeardsGarage amazing by the videos and for sharing all the knowledge, in your opinion the engines honda line gx are superior in terms of quality and performance, here in brazil there are several brands, we can say clones of the honda engines, can you take this doubt,
Hey man, I just bought a gy6 150cc adult size gokart and I was wondering if you could please let me know where I can get parts for the motor to make it faster ect performance parts. The way they have it set up the motor revs really high but still goes really slow it only has one foreward gear and it feels like super low gear . Is there governer? Thank you
What if I told you making sure the ring gaps aren't in line makes absolutely no difference. Coming from a mechanic with experience in the field the rings are constantly rotating during operation
Michael Lang I was gunna say the same thing. Especially with a fresh hone. Also a techinican lol but I wouldent leave them lined up if I was assembling an engine that's for sure in theory they should move together.
I have a Honda GX240 and I just removed the governor (thanks for the tutorial Red Beard) and I'm wondering if you know about how to bypass or replace the rev limiter for a higher limit. Any idea how or where to start with that sir? Love the videos and glad you didn't burn up with that one cart that decided to commit suicide.
Aren't you cutting down on your cooling air flow and throwing off the balance cutting those fins off like that? Do you have any other suppliers? Go Power Sports is just too damn expensive.
Robert G I use bmi karts they are pretty close shipping is incredibly fast but that's because they are in Ohio and I'm in ny where as gps is in Texas and more expensive
