yes it definitely depends whether ur doing these tips or not. i find plopping helps for 15mins or i think i might start doing it how u did with the scrunching out when applied products and see if it makes a difference....thanks for tips x

I find it soaks up more because of the actual squeezing compared to plopping. But i usually do have to go in with another layer of gel since it removes product

Thank you for all your work putting this information together for all us newbies and those trying to understand their hair! I've found that since I hit my 40's my hair has gotten wavy, not quite full on curly but definitely no longer pin straight like when I was younger! Diffusing definitely makes it closer to curly than just wavy. I'm currently trying different methods of applying products and diffusing while I figure out what works for me. Having videos like this definitely helps understand my hair and how to care for it. I've watched so many videos but I keep coming back to yours because they seem to be easier to follow and understand. Your videos just make more sense to me. I appreciate all the time and work that goes into making these videos! Thank you so much!

low porosity gal here and you are 100% correct, it takes FOREVER to dry if my hair is properly moisturized (medium density). an hour/hour and a half diffusing until 80-90% dry with high heat, high speed using your plop diffusing technique. and let me tell you, your technique was a game changer for me cause before i always ended up with sad elongated curls and no volume whatsoever so thank you so much!!! i'll try some of your tricks to see if i can cut my drying time a bit 💕

Damp styling always makes my hair MORE defined haha I think because if I have too much water in it, it just weighs my curls down and pulls them out, especially in the areas where my hair is wavier and I have trouble getting definition LOL maybe it'd work better if my hair was shorter but it's quite long at the moment

Yes! I saw a video on flashdrying once, and I was like "give me some of that flashdrying action!" It can take up to five hours to air dry my (short!) hair, and 45 minutes to an hour to diffuse... And the longer it takes to dry, the more the wave pattern goes flat.

Gena, thank you, you have just made sense of something that has baffled me for ages. I have high porosity hair and it takes forever to dry, which didn’t make sense. Explaining that it could be water logged is not something I’d thought of. Well today is wash day and I’m going to try your routine and see how much less drying time I have, thank you 😊

I diffuse my hair the exact same way! I'll place the diffuser on my bed and then lay my hair upside-down right in front of it (with a tshirt underneath ofc so my bed doesn't get wet). It helps with volume and definition, but I mainly do it out of pure laziness 😂🥴

This is very informative- I have 3c/4a curls and coils - great tips that would help all curl types. About the drying tips specifically. I have high porosity, high density hair - so I MUST let the product sit and absorb for an hour or so - then blow dry - diffuse -
@sarahjohnson9026

I tried this method today! I didn’t have time to diffuse until my hair was mostly dry, but my roots were totally dry without having to use the hair dryer. Typically if I don’t diffuse, my roots especially will be wet for hours. My hair looks great! I’m excited to try diffusing to see how long it takes. And I didn’t feel like I was squishing out a bunch of product like I do when my hair is sopping wet.

It's not CG friendly, but I LOVE using AG fast food leave in - I swear it enhances curl like a leave in, and though it has cones, it has really great ingredients that give amazing moisture, slip, and strengthening with its silk proteins. Works better than 95% of curl creams

This is very helpful thank You. So to ensure I’m following this, you shampoo then deep condition. Rinse it out using a comb and then towel your hair for a bit. Then after you ensure hair is still a bit wet and then apply leave in conditioner, mousse and gel. Then you might use towel or else go straight to diffuser. I was doing the leave in immediately in shower on soaking wet hair. No wonder it took forever to dry. I noticed you use a mousse and gel. Why both? And when you shake out the cast, how do you do it without creating frizz?

How do you have your hair cut? Do they do lots of little layers, dry cut it? Dry cutting for myself is too difficult because my curl differs from day to day. My curly seems to start at about an inch and a half from my scalp. And so I tend to get flat at the top. I can do techniques to lift the roots for volume, but I could use a lot more.

Hi Gena! I just wanted to ask you to clarify something - the density chart you show at 15:00 says “around in diameter”. Is it referring to diameter (as in the distance across a circle) or circumference (as in the distance around a circle)?

Hi Gena! I have been watching curling videos for an hour trying to find the best curl products for me. I have 2c-3a thick and long hair and can’t decide what to use. I have been using Shea moisture curl enchanting smoothie which really works well for me and a random mousse. I want to know, do you recommend a gel or mousse? And also, could you point me to some good gel is so? Or good products for 2c hair? I just want a simple hair routine..It’s time to change it up!

Hi Gena! I am still transitioning my hair and now from waves I am 2c-3A curl. I cannot stand Cantu curl activators - no matter how much I use and if I go with soaking wet or damp hair (follow with gel) - I look like I have sad, greasy pasta on my hair. Are there any products you would recommend for helping the curls curl better/tighter that are not full of butters and oils?? xx
@GenaMarie
@GenaMarie 3 года назад
The Curlsmith leave-in I used in this video is my go-to lightweight cream/leave-in! I wish i knew of one from the drugstore to recommend 😔 Every drugstore cream I've tried is on the heavy side with oils and butters. I'll do some research and keep everyone posted, especially for my next Top 10 video about the best leave-ins and creams coming up later this month.
@KasiaZ
@KasiaZ 3 года назад
@@GenaMarie Oh, looking forward for the upcoming video! I have access to Curlsmith and I have even seen like a small, travel size tube of that leave-in so might as well try it :) Today I am awaiting a package of Aunt Jackie's Baby Curls because it looks like adults like it too :) So far I like Tigi Curls Rock Amplifier the most but the ingredient list is not perfect as it contains silicone - but if I follow with a mousse or gel, it lasts until next wash day and doesn't weight my hair down and they are nice and soft). I see these products called 'curl activators' like cantu or creme of nature are just a mix of rather heavy duty butters and oils and that is just too much for me :)

Hi, I tried the not your mother's curl activated mousse, and it made my curls hard and crispy. Any suggestions? I have 3 a curls and I'm letting my hair grow out from a short pixie. So I want to start a new regimen for my hair growing out.
@seretx3
@seretx3 3 года назад
Hard and crispy is actually really good, you won't get frizzy hair that way. If it's too hard you can try applying less product but hard and crispy is really my way to go! Only thing you need to do once it's dry is to go over your hair with your hands to break the crisp so it turns soft (you can either scrunch or just go over it with your hands, for extra volume use a little bit of oil while doing that). Good luck with your hair!

Quick question. My individual strands tend to start curling one way and the the other, kind of like there are 2 S’s connected by a C. Is that normal? Can I fix it with curl training?
@GenaMarie
@GenaMarie 3 года назад
Yes, definitely normal and I have those as well. Curl training can help, but overall it's tough to change the natural curl pattern. Using a brush and creating that tension as you go down the strand helps and also finger coiling.
@emmagavars6385
@emmagavars6385 3 года назад
I would use a Denham brush and brush it then as u go down your hair start curling the brush the way u want it to go as if ur curling ur hair around and around until u hit the end of hair....or all in a similar way that's what I do and it helps put all my curls a bit more tamed.

Plopping is when you have all your hair bundled on top of your head with a tshirt, towel or scarf for an extended period of time (20 min- multiple hours) Microplopping is scrunching with a tshirt or towel.
