wow, two things that make this diff easy are the threaded barrel adjusters obsoleting shims and separating the pinion preload from its depth by way of that plate and shim. I also like how the pinion snout is captured in a bearing, i wonder if they needed to do that because the plate might be weaker than a solid housing?
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad 5 месяцев назад
That’s a great thought. In my mind it’s probably that. But it’s also a benefit because it prevents pinion deflection. It’s all around a more simple axle to gear…and super strong.

9:00 It would be more accurate to not discuss backlash in isolation, because in actuality pinion depth also changes backlash. So now we have two variables that control backlash, carrier bearing offset and pinion depth. That’s where the gear pattern comes into play. That gear pattern separates the two variables so that you know which one to reduce and which one to increase in order to get the backlash back to spec but with a different pinion depth. Because there are many different combinations of carrier offset and pinion depth that produce the same backlash.

Absolutely. It’s definitely something that could have been better explained. But hopefully people realize that when they check their pattern.

Hey Dan, this video series is the best on RU-vid. Thanks for being so thorough, and documenting every step. I have far more confidence in tackling the job, you have answered many questions I had for years. It's 2:00 am , I better go to bed. Cheers from Canada.

Really nice job with the videos. I waited till this last one to comment. You gave a lot of detailed information. Couple of constructive points for you... 1. Soft jaws on the vise so you don't mar your parts. 2. When you're checking pattern, spin the ring gear with a wrench on one of the bolts. It's quick and easy as the pinion has bearing preload and provides resistance against spinning. No need to try and hold the ring gear. You are doing a really good job of diving deep and presenting it well.

Thanks man! I appreciate that. I used to have a set of soft jaws but I lost them when I went to make the video. I just can’t find them anywhere and did want to wait to film. But I agree with you there. The wrench is a great idea. Tbh I have seen others do it…I just never have and always got a pattern. But for the interest of showing people another way…I’ll have to do that on the D60 video. Thanks for the support! Always up for new ideas!

Very descriptive and informative. If I ever have a 14 bolt and want it regeared I’ll come to these videos for step by step rather then pay a shop. Thanks!

Thanks for the support Alex! The Dana 60 video will help people a ton. They are starting to roll out soon. The d60 is basically the same process as a D30/44/70/80.

I really appreciate your instructions. Rebuilt my 2015 14 bolt using these videos. This was always black magic to me and I’ve stayed far away from opening an axle and setting up gears. Had no idea I could do it. Again really appreciate it. Have a sub and some likes.

Great job. I don't like the drop method on the ring gear. I rather roll it in. Slowing down in my old age.

I hear you! It’s definitely easier and safer. I was just being lazy with the way I had the housing positioned and the camera set up to view it. I’ll do it that way with the Dana 60 though.

Heck yea! Awesome! It’s definitely not easy. But doable. The biggest thing is taking your time and just not giving up. But being able to walk away when you get frustrated. Some are easier than others. But super cool that you just did yours!

I see what you mean about this one being easier without shims I watched BFH Garage video on regear and with the shims he putting all in, then testing it and pulling it out a few times till it was right
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad Год назад
EXACTLY! it’s also easier to make pinion adjustments because you can remove the pinion without removing the carrier. I’ll have to do it similar to the way he did when I do the Dana 60. That will start airing next week. I’ll start filming that tomorrow

Nice video. One question. Is there a reason you set up for gears before welding on the brackets and truss? Could the heat associated with welding mess up your gear set up?
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad Год назад
GREAT QUESTION! so I did it this way just to show people later how to weld brackets to an axle that already has gears in it. Lots of people build axles and put trusses and brackets on them without regearing them or pulling the gears to do it. So I’m going to do it to show people that technique. It COULD be a problem on a front axle because of inner seals. But on a rear it’s much easier.

At the 11:00 minute mark of your video here, what made you decide to tighten the passenger side spanner nut three holes past snug? It seems to me that bending your large screw driver shaft do accomplish that can be an indication that you put way too much pre-load on the carrier bearings. But of course that's a guess on my part. My point is, where is it written that instructs the end-user/installer to tighten that spanner nut so tight? And how do you know that wasn't placing too much pre-load on the carrier bearings?
