Today I'm removing the body of my explorer from the frame in my small garage using only a cherry picker! No 2 post lift or hoist! Once the bodies removed I can begin work on the frame to secure this big diesel drivetrain in this 4x4 offroader build. Thank you for tuning in and please consider subscribing to see the rest of the build!

and here's the video where the body goes back on if youre interested, it took a bunch of cutting to fit the body over the cummins!! 😅 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DCKIllUNPo8.html

Looking for information about separating body and frame of my 4x4, and not 20 seconds in there is mention of the Rankine scale! This is probably the fastest I've ever subbed to any channel on youtube!

If you managed to do all that with that much clearance of ceiling you are a very creative human being. lol

That was super sketchy! I would love to see the video of how you got that body married back onto the frame.

Sir , may I suggest you start with something that will be more suitable to the Cummins engine . The 6.0 / 6.4 power strokes could be had for a thousand dollars if you find the right sale where the body of the truck is nice , but the engine is shot ... The Cummins will actually fit into the engine bay and they sell adapter kits for the auto or if your lucky the zf6 standard transmission and even mounts. Also the front differential and springs are more than adequate to support the weight of the Cummins . My other concern is the engine being to free ran due to the light weight and gearing/tire size of the vehicle . The optimum gear ratio and tire size for the Cummins is 3.55's on 35" tall tires .. anything less the engine really is out of its rev range unless you only like running 50mph @ 2500 rpms. I am not trying to come off as a hater, I love what you are doing , my hobby as well is swapping engines into different manufacturers vehicles .. I just notice when people attempt to do these kind of swaps is they end up admitting it was more trouble than it is worth especially without a hoist . All the best !

Thanks for your input! I agree swapping this into a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck would make a lot more sense! I definitely don't recommend people to attempt what I'm doing since it is a bit silly haha. However practicality just isn't what I'm looking for in this swap so I'm going to keep plugging along ;). I have looked into the gearing but I don't think I've put it on video yet. Optimal gearing for this would be running 80 down the highway at 1800 RPM since that's peak torque. The two options I'm looking at are the short term, keep my 3.73's and 31's (they're on my other car) in which case I'd have to run down the highway at 70-75, but this would mean I can get the thing running without redoing both the front and rear end (get it on the road much quicker). The 2nd better and more expensive option would be swapping in the 3/4 ton stuff like the dana 70 and run 3.54's with 33's which would put me at about 2k on the highway which would be about perfect, but would take much more work and put off finishing the project for a while longer (but much better overall). I haven't decided if I'll finish the engine swap before doing the axle swaps, or do it all at once, but I should have a decision made very soon!

How high is your ceiling man? Getting ready to do a frame swap in my explorer and want to make sure i have enough room in the garage
@BuildSomethingAuto
@BuildSomethingAuto Год назад
Just measured, about 7.5' to the garage door sliders and about 9.5' to the actual ceiling. Keep in mind I had the dana 70 spring over axle underneath it and everything (adds like 6" in the rear). To the ceiling I had room to spare but if I had to keep it under the garage door sliders I would say take the tires off and put it on car dollies. Also removing the engine helps, but isn't necessary I was later able to get the body back on with the cummins in the chassis. Again I'd recommend 2 cherry pickers to make it easy, and if you pick it from the side like I did removing that rear door to give more reach and less risk damaging the body is a good idea. If you want to see better camera views of me putting the body back on take a look at this video at the current timestamp. It took some jiggering but over all wasn't too bad. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DCKIllUNPo8.html

@@BuildSomethingAuto thanks for all the help man! Frame is under the body. I ended up removing the rear axle and radiator core support and rolling the frame out from underneath, as i would be swapping the rear axle anyways. It all worked out and i should be finishing up my project this week!

You could get a Dana 44 TTB from a bronco or f150, or a Dana 50 TTB from an f250
@BuildSomethingAuto
@BuildSomethingAuto Год назад
A dana 50 TTB is exactly what I went with 😅. I figured they put em in powerstrokes so it should handle the power. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oyu8b0woLzk.html

How did you attach the cherry picker in back?
@BuildSomethingAuto
@BuildSomethingAuto 2 года назад
I guess I didn’t really show that part. The tow strap went between the rear hatch and the body and all the way down to underneath the body where there was a couple holes I connected the hooks of the tow strap to. I dont know that the rear strap was entirely necessary but I did it mostly to make sure it didnt tilt down too much since I dont actually know where the center of gravity is

@@BuildSomethingAuto Can you show me a picture of the holes?

Where would you put the two cherry pickers if you had them? How would you use tall jack stands?
@BuildSomethingAuto
@BuildSomethingAuto 2 года назад
@@rickanderson3612 hmm.. actually I can, I use to blog about this project on explorerforum but havent in a while. www.explorerforum.com/forums/threads/cummins-first-gen-build-thread-no-really.490429/page-2 Halfway down when Im using a cherry picker to lift the rear I used a very similar setup, same holes, as when I rigged to pick the whole body up at once later on. Just scroll through you’ll see it in more detail.
@BuildSomethingAuto
@BuildSomethingAuto 2 года назад
@@rickanderson3612 also, in a later video when I put the body back on I managed to pick the whole thing up at once so consider watching the video where the body goes back on for doing it with one cherry picker. The 2 cherry picker method would gain you much more height though if you needed it to get over, say if your engine was still in the frame. I managed to get the body back on with the cummins in with one cherry picker but it was a little more sketchy. Either way between these two videos and that blog page you should get some ideas.

Do a straight axle sway get rid of the ttb junk
@BuildSomethingAuto
@BuildSomethingAuto 2 года назад
Youre too late I already swapped that junky dana 35 TTB for a junky dana 50 TTB 😉. Im not scared of a little bit of suspension design and a solid axle just doesnt tick the right boxes for me and my rig.
