This video describes how I went about removing the arm rest from my pull tab style Herman Miller Aeron Chair. Yes it is possible without a blow torch lol. DISCLAIMER: This method is destructive and I am not responsible for damage to your chair or injury to your self. So attempt at your own risk. You will need a hacksaw, needle nose pliers, T27 Torx bit, ratchet, some type of cloth and a hammer.

Thank you very much friend, long live the internet, in a studio I have the model with a wheel and it was really easy to remove the armrests, but at home I bought a model like yours and yesterday I spent a horrible afternoon trying to remove it, thanks once again

Take the back off with an allen 3/16. The inner two bolts are torx T27. The one on the right is a regular thread, so right tight, left loose. The one on the left is a REVERSE thread, so right loose, left tight. That was the cause of all my problems - not realizing that the bolt on the left side was a reverse thread
@andrewgoodwincomposer
@andrewgoodwincomposer Год назад
Hey Yeah I found some information describing that and did do that to, but the Lock Tight on the bolts made impossible to get mine off. Very strange that they are opposite. Glad you got yours off!

Hey man I'm having this issue for removing the seat. Are you talking about those bolts? I got the right bolt with regular thread, hars but got it out. The left one O have already stripped the screw! Do you know if that bolt is y reverse thread?! If it is, this is beyond me why would they do this.
@andrewgoodwincomposer
@andrewgoodwincomposer Год назад
@@santiagomansur1372 hey yes they are opposite thread. And endlessness turning, because of the lock tite. Besides the method I showed, I read some people were able to heat it up enough to melt the lock tite and release the bolt. You could also attempt to drill the bolt out to release it

I used a heat gun to melt the plastic lever, just twisted the whole thing right off :) In case anyone prefers to avoid impact on their wrists or something idk

Thank you so much this saved me so much time and pain from these ridiculously over engineered arms! Took all of 60 seconds with a reciprocating saw but it could have turned out badly too haha

I am watching this video after giving up trying to get the bolt off with hand tools, and I then switched to an impact driver instead of putting the drill in reverse I put it in forward and it manages to break the bolt in half so if you too lazy like me you use a hand saw just use an impact. You could also just drill through the bolt.
@andrewgoodwincomposer
@andrewgoodwincomposer 2 года назад
Cool yeah drilling through the bolt would do it lol! When I got the bolt off I could see the lok tite on it that was preventing it from turning mine was red. Glad you were able to remove them!

As a fellow composer who's been trying to take off my armrests on the same chair for the past 30 mins (all while procrastinating on a cue lol), THANK YOU for making this video!! Now I know I can give up and perhaps try your sawing method on another day. The endlessly turning torx screws were driving me crazy... Any regrets since you removed yours?

Absolutely none! The chair still looks really professional and it’s so easy to play instruments and be closer to my mouse and keyboard

Don't need to cut it off!!! Torch the plastics lever to melt it off. Then heat up the metal nut. Use a piler to hold the nut and turn the bolt with T27. On left hand side it is a reversed thread so turn right to loose it.
@andrewgoodwincomposer

Yeah I kept reading torching it could work, but I didn’t want to buy one and also they don’t like fire at certain areas. Would have been more fun though lol

don't need to torch it, I made a video showing how to do it with just an allen wrench: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S8-YkscTjTo.html

This is so crazy all you need to do is have someone pull on the arm while you turn the screw and the threadlocker that holds it will come apart.
@andrewgoodwincomposer

I mean I had no clue and found no info online how to do this. You should certainly make a video I would have rather done it that way

I had the same problem years ago when I bought a used aeron. Could not find any info and the screw would just turn forever. I called herman miller directly and got lucky the person told me what to do.@@andrewgoodwincomposer

Just had same issue on my 2015 Aeron, read that the previous thumb roll adjusters didn't have loctite and the remastered neither so they can be tightened easily. What a nightmare, I want to keep my arms but what a daft mistake on Herman Millers engineering team. I'm toying with the idea of cutting them off and replacing with the thumb adjuster arms because that is the only long term solution...for now i'm just using cardboard stuffed in to keep them tight, shouldn't have be cutting off and replacing the arms ffs
@andrewgoodwincomposer
@andrewgoodwincomposer Год назад
I know such a pain for such an overly expensive product. Maybe it was a design stability choice idk
@Neo-mw1pp
@Neo-mw1pp Год назад
@@andrewgoodwincomposer Indeed, a pain considering the expense of the chairs. I think HM intention was by using the loctite the arms would never come loose but they didn't consider that the washers will wear in time, that's the issue with mine...one of the three washers has snapped and worked itself free. Ahh! such is life lol 👍

@andrewgoodwincomposer
@andrewgoodwincomposer Год назад
@@ChrisCDXX my guess would be that system is sturdier than a removable option. Their thing seems to be that it’s unbreakable. I guess I felt like for the price they should serve me dinner while they remove arms themselves lol

There's an easier and faster method. Use an oscillating multi-tool with a metal-cutting blade. Loosen the arm lock handle, pry the washers away from the underside of the bolt head, wedge the blade into the gap, and saw away. Takes about a minute to cut through those bolts.

haha chuckled when i got to the end of the video and saw the keyboard on a pullout tray and ua apollo rack interface bc i literally have the exact same setup (only with a universal audio 6176 mounted under my apollo instead of an avalon lol) and realized.. yep this guy is frustrated with trying to play/track guitars with armrests in his way too 😆

I made a video showing an easier way: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S8-YkscTjTo.html TLDR: the LEFT arm rest is reverse threaded, so clockwise to loosen AND it helps to wedge something in the side to keep if from turning endlessly. Video isn't shot very well but it shows all of that and some other tips!

If you left the lever on could you not have just unscrewed the T27 torx bolt and taken the arm off that way without the destruction.
@andrewgoodwincomposer

I’m not sure how much age plays into it, mine was used probably several years and the screw is endlessly turning. I read about heating it up with a blow torch and tried brake cleaner. There definitely was lock tite on the screw when I removed them
@divest6527
@divest6527 2 года назад
@@andrewgoodwincomposer Same here. I stripped the torx screw and cut the head off of it carefully with a Dremel thinking I could buy a replacement part for it. I was livid when I saw the cam and the loctite - it's pretty much designed not to be removable.

I had the same problem as you OP; had to shove something next to the lever to keep the pressure on (hopefully this helps others: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S8-YkscTjTo.html)
