Herman Miller Aeron Fixed Arm Rest adjustment

I adjusted my sons Aeron fixed arm rests to the highest position. I did have to remove the plastic spacer. I am not sure if this spacer is aesthetic or helps keep the armrest from sliding up and down to maintain the fixed position. I guess I will find out. Maybe Herman Miller makes plastic spacers for different height adjustments? If I find any I will post a link.
I am not sure if these are meant to be adjusted this way without the plastic spacer, so just showing what I did. This may void any warranty or damage your chair or cause injury if you try it. So this is not a recommendation for others to try this.

I don’t think many people will know a spacer is supposed to be there. You did a good job macgiver.

Thanks for the video - I thought the plastic fillers were necessary to hold the armrests in place but it doesn’t seem to be the case. Thanks again for making this.

Thanks, I think the plastic spacers are designed to help hold them in place. I did save mine just in case I need to revert back. But so far they are still working fine raised all the way to the top. Have a great day, and thanks for the comment.

Thank you! I just found this video as I realized I need to adjust my arms up. I figured it wasn't adjustable, but after noticing the lines you can see near where the arms attach I decided to look up to see if I could find any information on how to adjust these. After seeing you taking it apart that definitely looks adjustable. I think all these chairs that are the "fixed" ones have the same spacers, mine is the same as that one and is probably around 10 years old. That plastic only appears to be a filler as all the inside I saw in yours looks to be the actual support parts and the plastic only seems to be a filler for that hole. You can see the hole in the ones that have the adjustable arm. Going to mess with this after work as I've had some recent back/neck pain that reminded me I need to adjust those arms so my arms are better supported during the long hours I sit at my desk.

I hope it works out for you and helps your back/neck. My sons chair I adjusted in the video seems still very solid and the arms have not moved. Sitting all day does seem to take its toll on the body even with a comfortable chair. I keep trying to remember take a standup break periodically. Have a great weekend and thanks for taking the time to comment. 😊

Thanks for showing your chair with fixed arm rest. I had no idea they made them like that. My old chair has the dial adjustment. I'm planning to buy a new chair but realized they charge you an extra $60 for fully adjustable arms. The lumbar support is another $60. If I'm not mistaken, these feature were already included in the cost of the chair when they were made. I'm better off with a used one.

I have had good luck with used aeron chairs so far. I do like adjustable armrests over the fixed if I have a choice. I also had to buy a couple new lumber supports and luckily they have new ones on Ebay for under $20 each and are working great. Probably knock offs though, I should go compare them to the real one side by side and see if I can tell. Thanks for posting.

@@MyRandomTechBlog can a whole chair be made of knock offs but pass as the real thing?

So far so good, they have not slid down on my son yet. He likes them at the highest position. (He's about 5'11" right now)

For the price of these chairs and the name you're paying for, it's a bit baffling that they'd make these essnetially "permanently" affixed at one height, when a $45 chair from Staples comes with stock adjustable arm rests😂😂

Can you replace these arms for the ones with adjustable lever?

Awesome! thanks for the great and informative vid. Good to know that it is possible to adjust them if need be. Doesn't look too bad without the plastic caps so i'll give that a go at some point and follow your video. Thanks.

Was going to answer this. Got lucky and mine were the adjustables. With the adjustables, they don't put the plastic piece in at all.

Great point! I just looked at mine with adjustable arms after reading your post. No plastic piece. I should have looked at that earlier. Thank for the post!

@@MyRandomTechBlog No problem. I originally had a B with non-adjustable arms. Broke the seat and was allowed to trade it in at a place that refurbs Aerons. The new chair came with adjustables. They were set in the lowest position and I just kinda lived with it. Thinking I'd just manually fiddle them later. So was watching your vid on how to adjust.

FYI, I have a chair with adjustable armrest and that cover isn't there. It's got railing to move it up and down for a reason.

Thanks, I should have noticed that on my other chair with adjustable arms, but didn't until someone pointed it out earlier to me 🤣. I did wonder if they might help hold it in place from sliding down the way they are notched. But so far it hasn't been an issue and they are working great still and its been a while. Have a great weekend!

That would be a fairly easy part to 3d print. If they aren't already offered, maybe I'll look into doing that.

You shouldn't show every move like taking bolts out it makes the video TOOOO long

the 5 star bolt keeps spinning when i tighten it. It's still tight but uhh.. i tried to unscrew it and it won't come off now.
@MyRandomTechBlog
@MyRandomTechBlog 3 года назад
Which bolt? the one holding the arm on? Or the seat pan bolt? I read the seat pan bolts can be problematic on older models and spin. I did not have this issue on my 1998, but sounds like it might be what your talking about. Its mentioned in this blog under the "Seat Pan" section. whatdoineed2do.blogspot.com/2016/08/herman-miller-aeron-pitfalls-of-trying.html?m=1 "The seat pan's embedded threaded inserts, that particularly on older chairs, can rotate as you try to unscrew the hip bolts to remove the seat pan." This might be what you are having happen.

@@MyRandomTechBlog the one thats holding the aluminum arm of the arm rest to the vertical bracket piece. That vertical bracket then bolts to the back rest. Mine is 2005. You have to take apart the back rest to get to the 5 star bolt inside to either tighten or loosen the arm to the vertical piece. I hope i clarified what i was trying to address hopefully :\
@MyRandomTechBlog
@MyRandomTechBlog 3 года назад
@@Limeayy Hmm. I hope the bolt didn't get stripped. I tightened mine pretty good and it seemed to hold well without any issues. Also the arms have been stable so far with my son using it and not sliding down. Odd you cant remove it. I have had cheap bolts on other products have the head twist off as I tend to overtighten things. But mine was an older model so maybe yours is a little different?
