For part two in this Vintage MTB Restoration Beautiful Builds video, John tackles a seized bullmoose quill insertion with one easy step!
This technique works with seatposts, too; just remove the seat tube bottle cage bolts and spray the bottle inside the seat tube, ensuring that the spray is enough to fill the seatpost itself. If your seat tube doesn't have bottle cage bosses, try pulling the bottom bracket.
After it soaks for an hour or two, you can simply hammer the seatpost from the top to loosen the corrosion and pull it out.

Excellent walk thru! I'm sure we all found ourselves at one point with a stuck part on a frame. Well done getting that out!

Oh man, a fillet-brazed Ritchey!!!! Such a dream! Two "bikes that got away" for me are the 1987 Ritchey Commando and almost any pre-tRek Klein. Things of true beauty. Friend of mine is now a professor of materials science at one of the top universities in the country. Well, back in the day as he was a post-doc at a national lab, he realized his seat post was stuck in his Italian steel frame. Being a material scientist, he understood everything here was to understand about galvanic corrosion, galling and welding. Down to the molecule! So he said, "Ah, this won't be so bad. We've got EVERYTHING at our disposal here a the lab to fix this!" NOT. SO. FAST! Boy was he to be proven wrong! They utilized every chemical, oil, penetrant, acid, base, liquid nitrogen and heat to try to remove that seat post. All in vain. It went into the dumpster. So if this happens to you, just know it can happen to the best of them! Pull that post, remove any corrosion & reinstall with quality waterproof grease and anti-seize every so often (annual, semi-annual) so you can avoid the heartache. PS I learned after the fact that he probably could have salvaged the frame if he had had a machinist with a machine shop at his disposal. There are other mechanical methods to remove a seat post available. Just a hacksaw and careful work can do it as well.

Early 90s GTs had the double quill. Stems painted to match frame. Great looking bikes.

Thats the first time I've seen a double quill, the bullmoose bars I've found all have the quill built in. Rad!

Yeah, the built in quills were used on the "B" bikes and were made by Nitto in Japan. These were all made by Tom for the "A" bikes.

I wish it was this easy when I had to remove a seized aluminum seatpost from a columbus steel frame! After many tries I had to partially dissolve it with caustic soda, what a nightmare!

Crazy! Kroil has worked in most all conditions, including a seized post in a 1981 road bike (and multiple rusted bolts on old cars) - but it had to soak for three days to budge. Once it penetrated, a few whacks with a hammer on the top of the post loosened the corrosion and it pulled right out.

This was a 1991 road bike. It grew so much that it wouldn't budge, and we tried!... I had to hack the top off, repeatedly pour the concoction inside and let it work until the inner hole was wide enough to fit a sawzall blade inside. After cutting a vertical slot it had enough relief I was finally able to free it. All in all it went well, only damage to frame has been some marginally opaque spots on clear coat

It's my uncle's very old watch that he gave me ten years ago (it's got a great patina), and I just treat it like it's meant to be treated: as a watch. I don't take it off except to ride. Vintage watches, like bikes or cars, are ultimately precision tools that ought to be used, not babied, IMO. ;-)
