I just did this job on my 2006 Toyota Highlander. The bracket holding the carrier bearing on my vehicle was much different than the one on this video. To remove it with the axle in place was almost impossible. Since I was replacing the axle anyway I wasn't worried about destroying the bearing. After beating on it for an hour with a 3 pound sledge hammer I finally got smart and used my air hammer. Placing the air hammer directly on the bearing pushed it out in about three minutes. Obviously this method destroys the bearing but it works.

I have a Lexus rx400h, same design as the Highlander. I just spent 5 days trying to pull the stuck rusted axle out with every tool I could find. My neighbors were so annoyed with the banging that they came over to help yesterday. No luck!! All of us went inside frustrated. The plan was to step away from it today to clear my head before I lose my mind. Lucky I came across this video. It never occurred to me to take that bracket off. Even the lexus repair manual doesn't mention it. It just says to remove the nut that goes in the bracket and the pin and pull the axle out with a slide hammer. Thanks for this video!!! Heading back out now. Also I did buy the replacement at 1aauto, I should have checked the video then smh.

If you are a DIY and dont have a lift this may work for you. I recently got this job done by using a pickle fork between the housing and the bracket. Then hammer the pickle fork handle toward drivers side. This successfully broke the bearing free of the bracket. Then it was easy to finish the job using the hammer pulley, but i could have just used a hammer and chisel to finish the job. The hammer pulley did not work by itself until the pickle fork broke the bearing free. This done for a 2002 V6 model the bearing would not move until I used the pickle fork. No cutting or bracket removal was needed.

Good job. Thanks for the info. I would have hit those races with a stiff wire wheel on the end of a drill and got them cleaned up better so the bearing would be a slip fit. But you got the job done. Car probably will be junk it needs an axle next time around.

Heads up! If you have a hybrid with a CVT, you will lose a quart of Toyota ATF WS fluid from your CVT when you take your CV axle out. So either place a pan underneath to collect it, it will pour out. Or, drain your CVT first. Then repace your CV axle. Remembering to fill your CVT fluid after. Another thing to take note of is that the Hybrid CV axle is much beefier than the standard Highlander CV axle. So make sure your auto part store gave you the right one!

what happens if you just angle grind cut that circle piece in 2 places. think it would come loose. then replace the mount? I have a rusty ceased C clip and it wont pop loose and not enough room to slide the mount out with the axle like you did.

Can you explain the missing piece at 14:39 that is on the shaft between the two boots. Sort of like a small piece that is missing on the 1A Auto part. I want to buy but am concerned about the missing piece. Thanks for posting!

Nah the sienna bearing carrier won't come out like that. You might have to cut the axle with a sawzall if its rusted solid

This is a poor design, from a service perspective, by Toyota. I've spent hours fighting pass. side Toyota axles over the years. They should of made it a solid half-shaft that sits in the transmission & carrier bearing, then, give it splines on the end where a short axle could easily slide on and off. Difficult to explain but easy to service! Mitsubishi does this on some of their models if I recall correctly.
@danielm3835

Totally agree man.
@stevenw2866

Yes, I agree. My son’s Malibu has the half shaft design and it’s easier to replace its cv axle than this Toyota design.
