In this LeatherSeats.com Tech Tips Video Eric shows several ways that our installation dept. leverages thermal convection from both a commercial upholstery steamer and an industrial heat gun to quickly and efficiently remove wrinkles and improve the overall fitment on our full replacement custom leather-trimmed seat upholstery kit for a 2015 - 2019 S550 Ford Mustang. All Elite automotive upholsterers know the power of heat as it pertains to achieving the best results when working with a wide range of materials used in a variety of automotive upholstery related jobs and tasks. Whether you are new to automotive upholstery or a mechanically inclined Do-It-Yourselfer considering your first aftermarket leather kit installation you should find the information in the above video helpful. The commercial grade upholstery steamer and industrial heat gun are not considered "required tools" for most aftermarket leather-trimmed upholstery kit installations, but they certainly will make the job easier and if the tools are used properly will help even a seasoned DIYer to achieve much better up front fitment. It is not shown in this video, but after the factory upholstery is removed and before we start installing the new upholstery we steam the factory seat core foam to make sure that we bring it back as close to the original size as possible. We also use the steamer to heat up the seat upholstery kit by applying steam to the inside of each cover just before it goes on to soften the leather and make the cover easier to work into the optimal final position on the seat frame and foam. This video shows how effectively the same steamer and heat gun can be at improving overall fitment after the basic installation work is completed. As Eric states in the video, if either of these tools are used incorrectly by an inexperienced installer they can do A LOT of DAMAGE to leather very quickly and should NEVER be used on synthetic materials such as Vinyl or Polyurethane. Also, as a part of Keep in mind that in many cases leaving your seats sitting in direct sunlight for a 6 - 10 hours on a HOT summer day is just about as effective as using a heat gun and much less risky! The Sun does a fantastic job of slowly heating the leather, causing it to relax and adapt to the seat foam and frame without any real risk of damage to the materials. For the heat gun specifically, we recommend that you seek out formal training from an experienced automotive upholstery technician before using this tool for fitment improvement. If you do insist on trying out a heat gun for fitment improvement on an aftermarket automotive leather-trimmed upholstery kit and you can't acquire any training we would highly recommend that you make sure you know what parts of your interior are safe (real leather ONLY) for heat gun and that as you work those parts you are VERY conservative with the application of heat experimenting and testing at lower heat settings before moving up into the higher heat ranges!
