How to repair a leaking transom on an inflatable dinghy

Our dinghy transom leaked huge amounts of water. In this video I'll show you how I fixed it for £10
I used Sikaflex 291i. 70 ml was more than enough to seal the transom.
The 70ml tube, comes with it's own "corned beef tin" key that is used to squeeze out the sealant.

Well, I would recommend to remove the transom and reglue the whole thing with the appropriate glue (whether PVC or HYPALON glue depending on the material the dinghy is made of). Thus the fix will last much longer and will not be subject to all the problems neoprene fixes are subject to especially when the weather is really warm. Morevover, any repair shop will charge you a lot to clean up a fix made the way you propose. It is really messy to clean up the seal you made. This is just my two cents!

Hi Jean Thank you for your comments You are quite correct. The best repair would be to remove the transom completely, clean and re glue . I’ve seen a video on you tube showing how to do this . I suspect it would take 3 or 4 days of work We were going to scrap the dinghy , hence the attraction of a 10 euro repair to extend the dinghy’s life. Especially when it was only 1-2 hours work. The dinghy was sold for 50 euros the following season as it burst a seam in the Mediterranean sun

Would this work between the rubber transom "mounts" and the tubes? Mine have come away completely. I was hoping to use PURAFLEX 40 or CT1.

Pull the tape while the glue is still wet, then you don't have to score with the blade and risk exposing wood to the elements.

Hello, Wonderful work, congratulations. But can I ask you please, why didn't you sand the wood little bit just before application the sealant for having a clean surface? Thanks a lot for your sharing. 👍

Hi David, thank you for your comments. I did give the wood a light sand with 60 grade sandpaper to clean it a little. Then I blew out the area to remove the dust. It looks like I didn’t include that in the video. The seal surface is big about 3 cm each side and sikoflex will stick to almost anything. But like you say more prep is always a good thing

Hi David Thank you from Poole England If I find out how to do something that isn’t documented on RU-vid I do a video to help others, like this one, to save people time I sold my share in that boat ( moonshine) and I’ve just bought into another boat share in Greece and we are going out in a few weeks Really looking forward to it
