My blower motor was squealing, especially in very cold temps. I also had no blower at all on the lowest setting. This video shows how I troubleshoot these issues and replace the parts associated with it.

New Blower motor resistor and new blower motor. Had to modify the insulated shroud for the motor in order to not kink the electrical connections. I installed this in Feb.
Summer update: It's now June and both parts installed are working flawlessly. I'm happy with the parts I used and feel I got my money's worth out of them. I expect them to continue to perform well for many years.

A little tip on that rear screw. Take it out first. When reinstating, set the screw inside a socket and turn socket by hand. I reused the shrink rap on the wires. Thanks for this video, made life much easier.

Thanks Troy for great video on how to replace blower motor resistor. This evening 15 degree and snowing here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I went and bought blower motor resistor $49.99 for my 1999 dodge Ram 1500 at Autozone. I'd installed it and now I have heat.... 12/16/2016

Your instructions were spot on...that rear screw was a mutha...both ways...now my issue was it was making that squeal n I would smack the outer casing n it would quiet down until I did it n heard the blower come to a complete halt...today I put in a new blower...and now the fan only comes on at its highest setting and no cold air..the AC motor engages cuz you can hear it but that's it....suggestions?

Great vid! Very detailed period of instruction!! I have a 01-Diesel and soon i will be changing out the heater core and dash. While i am doing that, i plan on changing out my blower motor and now that relay/resistor. Recently I lost the 2nd & 3rd blower selections.

+Matthew Johnson while you're "in there" also check and consider replacing the bushing for the blend door (hot/cold selection). I just had to do mine. Possible without pulling the dash but MUCH easier if you are already there. Dealer only part and only about $12. You'll love that truck! Awesome! 👍🏼

Thanks. My 2000 Ram blower motor squealed and now doesnt work at all. Time to replace it and the other temp part. I replaced the heater core last summer and that was a big pain, but saved myself a lot of cash.

+harkness10 I dealt with it for a whole winter season. Miserable to say the least! It's a fairly cheap fix to have a heater again! PS go ahead and keep the snow up your way I have no need/want for the stuff! 😜

DIY Home and Auto now just out of curiosity as my blower does not whine, would it be more likely that the resistor is out and blower is fine?

+harkness10 the resister is super easy to get out. Pull it and see if it's cracked. You may also be able to direct connect the wires to test the fan (may need to consult someone else to ensure that's safe to do). I'd put money on it being the resistor though!

DIY Home and Auto ok cool. I got $400 to play with and don't wanna replace parts that don't need replaced. Need to do front brakes and obviously the heater issue but was contemplating going to an led conversion for my interior lights as well as my fogs as you did in one of your videos.

So I replaced the resistor today at the expense of $65 at local O'rileys, ran great through all the blower settings for quite a while. My wife and I pulled up to my parents house (maybe 5 miles away) shut truck down, and when we went to restart the truck we bot noticed a burning smell, like plastic or electrical. I reached under the dash and felt the leads to the resistor were warm so I unplugged the lead. I then heard the sound of the screeching blower motor. So I guess my question is, do you think the smell came from the resistor (hopefully not melting) or the blower motor that has made itself apparent that it is out?

Thank you! I have a 99 Durango. Mine barely works. Its loud and if I bang on the housing lightly it starts working. I bought a new blower motor and without watching this video I'd of thought it was going to be just as hard as replacing the heater core. That was a horrible experience. Now it -10°f here in Alaska. Argh I gotta pick the worst possible time to do this. Again Thank you for posting this video. It should be very helpful for me to get going on my vehicle.

Good video, thanks. Don't know if I would have known to look for that third bolt if I went out there blind. OEM motor lasted 415k miles and 19 years. Hopefully the replacement will get half that.

I'm in the same boat. Have a new motor and resistor, just waiting on better weather and hoping it doesn't completely fail before spring or I get chance to replace them. Right now, mine only runs on high and the motor howls like a banshee.

Good morning sir, thank you for the comments and links for the dash and dash bezel. Hey my dash is cracked pretty bad all the way across up by the windshield. Will that cover still work?

A friend of mine tried to cover his that was cracked. It ended up cracking worse over time and he ended up replacing the entire dash later. Cost him extra in the end. Once they crack they don’t stop cracking! I replaced my entire dash and it’s been amazing for years. No hints of cracking anywhere now. I’d suggest biting the bullet and replace the entire piece. 🤷🏼‍♂️

If my 97’ ram is making that whining sound but the heat works, would adding lubricant help? I think something might have fell in if that’s possible.

Yeah a lubricant would help unless there's just too much play in the motor. But I'm sure it wouldn't hurt. I recommend www.planetsafelubricants.com. Get some AIM Lubricant. Use it anywhere you normally would use WD-40, no smell and it works a lot longer. When you are in there look for leaves etc. Mine get's small leaves in it from the neighbors tree all the time. Keep the vents clear that are near your windshield wipers to avoid having them drop down in there.

DIY Home and Auto I took it apart and some leaves fell out lol. Sprayed it down and put it back. The sound is still there but more quiet compared to before. Just gonna replace the whole fan. Thanks for the video.

kunu98 I'd just replace the motor. That squealing or rough sound is typically the bearings going out. You could replace the bearings, but given the price of a new motor and the work required to replace bearings, well, it just makes more sense to put a whole new motor in.

Here’s a link to the dash bezel - amzn.to/37AC5zZ For the dash itself you have options. There’s an overlay that you can glue on over the top so you don’t have to pull your dash apart (amzn.to/37xR4ut) or the full direct replacement (you’ll have to search LMC Truck for that one, but it’s not cheap and def not an easy replacement).

+Wayland House Sounds like you are going to need to chase wires. He must have cut something. I'm assuming you've checked the fuses of course. Always start with the easiest solutions first. Sounds like fun though.

Future reference for anyone having issues with the blower motor, move the carpet and take the back one off first.. It sucked otherwise. And put it back the reverse order to make it easier

I didn't record it, but took several pictures. The blue bezel piece I got from Amazon and painted it with rustoleum metallic blue here's a link to that: amzn.to/2TeIB8e The dashboard itself I got from LMC Truck cuz mine was cracking and parts were falling down inside the dash. I have the same truck my name is zorena Ash I like your video I need a new dash to my dash board was all cracked up so I ripped it out and it looks really bad where did you order your dash from and how much was it ? Was it really hard to install?

It was a serious job to replace! Have to pull the entire dash about 18 inches out and some of the screws are hard to locate. It’s doable but not a fun job. I’ll see if I can find a link and post it here.

I’ve still got mine too. Love the Gen 2 Rams! It was many moons ago, but if memory serves I got it from LMC Truck. Hope that helps. It wasn’t a super fun task. But I’ll tell you one secret.... ratchet straps! Use them to support and hold the dash assembly’s way from the firewall while taking out the old and putting in the new. I would also consider replacing the heater core while you’re in there. It’s RIGHT there anyways and you do t want to have to pull it apart again in 6 months. Just sayin! 👍🏼 Good luck brother and thanks for watching! 🙌🏼

Can the blower motor get jammed by debris? Twigs and such?

Yeah when you drop the blower motor you will likely find some evidence of debris. In a bad case it could get clogged completely.

Nice video, but I think you forgot the gasket that goes between the blower motor and housing, with that sealed you may get a little bit better performance out of the whole system. The gasket has to be reused from the old motor. ...you may of replaced it and I just didn't see it

I have a 98 Cummins and the same problem is happening in my truck. Do I need to get the resister in order for the blower motor to work? Or can I just replace the blower motor and be ok?

+Justin Gough replacing the motor should be enough. I was missing some of of the speed settings. So as long as that part is working fine no worries. The resister isn't very expensive and is super easy to replace when needed.

+Justin Gough Sounds like you are making progress, that's awesome! It's not a must have but see if you can modify the housing to allow it to still work. Similar to how I had to cut the plastic to make the electrical not be bound up. If that's not possible just make sure there's some air flow getting to the motor. That vent is to help keep the motor cool. You got this Bro! 🙌🏼

In the little research I was able to do, it looks like the resistance might be in the switch assembly itself. Try going to www.rockauto.com and select your vehicle. Then under the section "Electrical-Switch & Relay" choose the blower switch. It's $9 and they will ship it right to your door. You might also have something going on inside the blower motor so you may also want to replace that as well. Wires that are getting hot is not a good thing! Whatever you decide please be safe!

Blower motors bad Can be resister or selectors but most the time you got noise, limited air flow, or your speed selection is limited your motor is bad.
