I had the cart queued up to buy a new blind for 1 broken slat! Woot! I just saved 60 bucks --by switching to Geico-- watching this video and performing the fix.

You saved my security deposit! The blind got stuck with the window lock and it tore two slats as I was opening the window. I could already imagine the landlord claiming hundreds of dollars in "repair costs" Luckily the blinds were excessively long for that window so he won't be able to tell (and it doesn't ruin the aesthetic) if a few are missing from the bottom.

YAY!! I did it. I took them apart. Gave them a long overdue wash and and reassembled them and replaced the busted ones with two off the bottom. Thank you. 🙏❤️

Thank you SO MUCH. We are watching someone dog and they just tore up the blinds. I purchased measuring tape and was doing the measurements of the window in order to buy new blinds and I was looking for a video to replace the blinds and your video saved me so much time and kept me from buying new blinds. Well, when I undid the knots at the bottom of the blinds I didn't realize I was going to lose the stings completely. I have the blinds that retracted and now I went from trying to replace 2 broken slats to replacing the entire blind set. Side note: if you have the pull down blinds only untie one string at a time and have someone assist so you don't end up having the string completely retract into top of the system.

Amy - I'm sorry that happened! Those cordless blinds are spring-loaded and the strings will retract completely when they are untied. When that happens, there's no way to fix them and the blinds will have to be replaced.

A thought: could it be possible that after taking it up high enough, could you tie it around another part of string in order to hold it in place until you're ready to re-tie it at the bottom?

Great video and super easy!! I was so nervous because I’m staying with my brother for a week and my baby got ahold of two slats and ripped them off. 🤦🏾‍♀️ I for sure thought I was gonna have to buy new blinds but you saved me and I didn’t even have to tell him lol 😉

my dog broke the picture window blinds which is not covered by warranty. I called the specialty blind store where I bought my blinds. they told me there was no way to repair my wooden blinds that cost over 500. this video was so helpful thank you ❤❤❤

I broke a slat this morning trying to close my window through the blind... I knew I'd break it but it was early and I was tired. So glad I found a video to demonstrate the repair. I think I'll mark on the string right above the undone knot so I can retie it precisely where it was in order to prevent needing to retie the pull cord.

*IMPORTANT NOTE* Do not undo both pull string if it is a 'cordless' mini blind. I learned the hard way, save yourself an hour of work and do ONE SIDE AT A TIME!

@@xensut In my case the pull strings did not fully retract so I took down the whole set of blinds and fetched them from the top of housing. Hope you were able to retrieve

Use a piece of tape at the end of the string it will help alot feeding the string through the blinds

@@CondensedComments yes! But doesnt have to be perfectly round can be square shaped too. Basically just something to help feed the string with some rigidity on the end for easier feeding it through the blinds . Hope that helps

Watching your "How Blinds Work" and then this "How to Replace a Broken Slat in a Mini Blind" after you referenced it if your wood blinds have holes that the lift cord is threaded through gave me the confidence I needed. And it all worked: marking the cord where the knot needed to go, wrapping tape around the end of the cord to create a threading needle, and using the bottom 'extra' blind as the replacement. I should have read comments first‼️Mine completely retracted and the string is gone! Now I found out it’s a lost cause and have to buy new blinds 🥹. P.S I have the cordless blinds. So do one side at time and finish all the way through and knot, then start the other side.

ty, my blinds were too long, so I need to know what to do with the extra slack after taking out unneeded slats. I'll try and find it on another video.

Carolyn - Are you meaning the extra slack in the lifting strings? If so, just pull them through the blind and then cut them to the desired length. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Well I undid the bottom plastic and cut the knot then the last blind fell off the sill and fell to the floor leaving dozens of scattered slats falling out. My problem now is that I can't find the string that is used to hold the slats together. I heard it slip, sounded like a zipline but I have no clue where it went! Anyone know where it's. hiding?

Hi there, Sounds like you have cordless operating blinds. Do you just push/pull on the bottom rail to raise and lower them? Sounds like one of the strings that lifts the blinds up retracted into the spring-loaded motor in the top of the headrail. When that happens, it's time to replace the blinds. There's no way to repair them.

I was set up by the previous occupants and went on my patio and came in the door and my hand hit the end of the blind and two of them came off in my hand. I will be trying this tomorrow. I was nervous about letting the rental office know. Will update.

Do you have a video on how to replace a slat in cordless blinds? I can’t get to the knot at the bottom to untie it, looks like it has a clamp or something on it..

Hi Sabrina, We don't have a video for that. Sometimes, slats on cordless blinds cannot be replaced. Be careful untying the lifting strings. If the string isn't held down, it will retract into the spring-loaded mechanism in the top of the blind and the blind will be unusable.

Took me a while longer than the video due to some arthritis. But it was really simple. Just tedious. Helpful hint. I used tweezers to help me remove the string from the slats they made it easier to grab the string. 😊

I love this EXCEPT I can’t free the knots at the bottom of the very cheap cordless mini blinds in my rental house! Cat snapped a slat trying to see out the window. Was hoping to not have to replace the whole darn thing!

Replacing slats in a cordless blind is a different type of repair. Once the lifting strings are loose, they will zip up into the spring-loaded motor in the top of the blind if you don't hold them tightly. Once that happens, the blind will have to be replaced.

Bummer! Yes, once the lifting strings retract into the motor on cordless blinds, there's no way to fix it and the blind needs to be replaced.

I tried to shorten a new-style cordless blind doing the same thing and of course had to get a new blind. I don’t think there is any way to replace a slat on the cordless variety!

Omg the string that goes through them got sucked up all the way at the top ☠️☠️ Can you please make a note in the video to do 1 string at a time or else it will retract if all strings are untied. Now i have to replace the entire thing

My blinds are like these and strung through but they have the plastic clips wrapped around the bottom slat that you use to pull the blinds down and push up and open. There’s no free strung for me to untie

Hi there, The type of blinds you have are called cordless blinds since you don't pull on cords to operate them. If you untie the strings inside the bottom rail of the blinds, the lifting cord will retract into the top of the blinds where the spring loaded motor is. If that happens, the blinds are ruined and will have to be replaced.

Hi Esperanza, Are the blinds you're working with cordless? (That means that you don't pull on strings to raise them; you just push/pull on the bottom rail to move them up and down.)

@@fixmyblinds Yes, they are cordless. As soon as i took one of the middle strings out and it slipped from my fingers it went up and i can’t get them down. Do i have to take off/detach my blinds in order to get them??

I'm sorry to say it, but once the strings are retracted into the mechanism in the top rail, there's usually no way to get it back out. You may have to replace the blinds altogether. I'd take them down and see if you can see the end of the string in the top rail. If you can, you may be able to pull it out and rethread it. Otherwise, you'll most likely have to replace the blind.

That's correct. Cordless blinds have tension on the lifting strings. If the lifting strings are removed from the bottom rail and let go of, they will zip up into the top rail and into the spring-loaded motor. Once that happens, it's time to replace the blinds.

Yes, you can replace the very top slat. It will just take a bit longer to restring the blind.

Depending on what you paid it's less hassle to just replace them . I broke a six dollar blind and spent an hour going nuts. It's on me I know 🥺

Alan, sometimes it can be easier to just replace the blind if it's so inexpensive. Some blinds just aren't worth fixing.

BTW, there is an "up" side and a "down" side to the blind. It's curved. I forgot.

Hi there! Yes, on some blinds, there is an up/down side. It's important to put the slat in at the same orientation as the others so it will close properly.

On cordless operating blinds - which is what it sounds like you have - once those strings get sucked up into the mechanism in the top rail, it is usually impossible to get them back out. You may have to replace the blind.

Hi Diana, After you untie the knot in the bottom rail of the slat, you pull out the center lifting string from the slats all the way up to where the broken slat is.

What are lift strings? Are there other strings that are not lift strings? My blinds do not look like these. I am going to look for another video that is more helpful.

The lift strings in this video are the strings that run in the center of the slats. The strings on the outside of the slats do not lift the blind; they tilt the slats opened and closed. What type of blind or share are you working on? Did you find another video that showed what you need? What is wrong with your blinds?

I suggest you define terms so as not to confuse people. I watched several videos; I am tired of buying new blinds only to have my cats break the slats within a day or two. I untied the strings, pulled them out, replaced the slats, put the strings back, and the strings are too short. It will have to do.
