Thank you for this information. The unit I was working on was a Trane model but they were similar enough that it got me through, much appreciated.

This was a very helpful video for me. I have a Bryant system but it looks like it probably came off the same exact factory line as Mr Cool does.

2:30 what lubricant did you apply on the new fan?
@MManv84
@MManv84 5 лет назад
Most of this applied to my model (DIY 18k) but the casing covering the fan motor (@1:45) on mine was completely different, it was a larger piece that included a metal plate that was also was screwed into the coil (also the plastic was gray; there were a lot of small differences like that). It took me hours & not a small amount of swearing yesterday to figure how to get it off and -- far more difficult yet -- to get it back in. I don't know if there are different manufacturers of this is a newer model, but IMO what's shown here is much more intelligent design (but if this is new, mine was purchased from Costco less than two months ago, so it can't be that old). Also @2:15 it said remove the screw -- I would not do that, I would just loosen it, it would be very difficult to get it back in (it's hard enough to just reach it to tighten/untighten). Finally, the video ends by saying reverse all steps; the first time I reassembled it, I had the fan motor shaft pressed too deeply into the fan blade (as in all the way), when I powered everything back up it made a horrible whining sound. Shutting it off & disassembling everything again :( :( :( I saw signs of the gray plastic of the fan motor casing having rubbed against the end of the blue fan blade, which helped me diagnose the problem. So moral of the story: when you tighten the screw to hold fan blade on the motor shaft (i.e. literally the step beyond the end of this video) make sure the fan motor shaft is not pushed as deep into the blad as possible, try to "center" the blade a little bit inside the space.

Wow, Thank you so much for posting this. I had the exact same problem as you, and I was banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how to do this. Even with your help from this comment, I struggled getting that darn plastic cover on the fan off. But I eventually got it off and replaced the fan. Great tip on the centering the fan before putting all back together. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the detailed information. What was the model number for the indoor fan motor?
@wschurchman
@wschurchman 5 лет назад
MManv84 thanks for this. What was the symptom of the bad fan? Was there an alarm? My indoor unit stopped working and will just beep and flash 88 incessantly. I replaced the control board but now they are telling me it may be the motor. Any info appreciated!

To add to this, i have the DIY 12k, and in particular my unit's radiator(the large metal thing) did not just come up nice and easy after removing the left screw like in the video, it took a lot of finessing. that, and the access to the fan set screw is not at all the same as this video, there's a black fan guard where the air get's blown out the bottom of the unit which you remove to access that cutout in the fan blade to the set screw. and like you said the motor casing takes a lot of cursing to get out and back in again. pay close attention to the Entire perimeter of the casing, as there are little things that have to match up to the metal parts of the radiator for it to actually snap back into place.

I have the 18K unit too and have been trying to get the dam fan motor cover off. Got an E3 error code last week, they said most likely a fan motor. They were good at sending one out, but unit is 8 months old, seems too early for failures. Anyway, video does not match like you say. Called Ingrams and Tech said you need to raise the coils up about 2-3 inches for clearance. I was fearful of putting too much stress on the lines, but did it and its now back in action. Don't think you need to remove the metal part for removal, I did, but put it back first when installing new motor.

So the conception of what’s going on is standard. However the practical application can vary greatly. Areas where screws need to be removed in areas unknown because the unit models and mfg vary greatly

I purchased the diy 24k model January 2021. It came with indoor unit DIY-24-HP-WMAH-230B. Soon after startup it started making a sound almost like the clicking of a mountain bike when you're not peddling, but it was a little quieter than that. Mr. Cool diagnosed it as a bad motor bearing and sent me a new motor. FYI - this instructional video is not quite accurate for my model. First, there is no cutout in the blower wheel for the motor set screw. The set screw is under the motor fan cover and has a metal collar...a better design IMO. The biggest pain with this job is getting the fan motor cover off. Its held in place with 1 screw and a clip at the top. Remove the screw and push in the clip. It comes off with some wiggling and downward force. As some other commenters have suggested, pay close attention to all of the attachment points for the motor cover. Take photos if how it's supposed to be before removing it. Much quieter now. Mr Cool - You need to do an updated video for newer models especially as this seems to be a common problem. with your product.

Thanks for the tip about the set screw. My DIY 18K model from July 2020 also had a set screw under the motor fan cover. I couldn't figure out how to remove the motor fan cover (it clearly wasn't designed for easy maintenance), so I drilled some holes through it. Should make future cleaning much easier! I posted a video on my channel if anyone wants to see how.

I went ahead and took the cover off and used a brush to clean all the dust off the wheel . Since my unit don't have a set screw . I used a form cleaner made for removing dirt and dust for ac . It stayed like new and I was able to regain full air rotation . Much ease then taking all apart and missing up something if not carful

If your model doesn't have a set screw visible like in this video, the set screw is under the motor fan cover (see another comment thread here). I tried using foam cleaner, but couldn't get everything cleaned out in the first pass. It's not easy, but you can drill holes in the motor fan cover to access the set screw and then remove the blower wheel for cleaning. See a video on my channel if you want more details.

I cannot for the life of me get the fan motor cover back on from my 12000 BTU DIY system. Was shipped a new fan motor and it took forever to get the cover off and now that it’s off, I can’t get it to both attach to the coils and be in place so it clips to the plastic parts to the point that I can screw it in. I tried making an HVAC appointment but they don’t work on mini split systems. At this point I have no idea what to do with my less than 1 year old system. This video made this process look much easier than it is and the most difficult part is always getting everything to fit back in place.
@shawnpitts001
@shawnpitts001 4 года назад
yeah you cannot do this with the newer models due to a certain screw being inaccessible because it is being blocked.

Hello, good video, I have to test an engine like that, the equipment has an E3 error code, because the plate had the R60 burned, which is the one that delivers the 15 Vdc to the engine. the query is, once the R60 is repaired, can the motor be tested without the outdoor unit? Cheers

I turned on my 12k unit and it made a grindy sound for a couple seconds, then nothing. The fan does spin freely so I assume the motor is hosed. I predict this painful process is in my future!

@@MrcoolComfort that wheel blower gets so nasty and it smells SO bad if you don't clean it. I tried cleaning it in place, but it's impossible to clean it really good due to the shape of the blades. that thing needs a pressure washing. as an advice, it would be nice to have an ability to remove wheel blower easily.

I have a DIY 18K and the fan on the inside unit is making a squeaking/ squealing noise. It is in time with the fan speed. Is this caused by the motor or something else?

I cant get the squirrel cage off the motor shaft after removing the set screw. It moves off the shaft but stops before removing all the way, seems like there is a bur or something on the motor shaft. Will the squirrel cage come out the motor side (right side) of the unit? It's a mr cool 12 BTU unit.

Most common faulty is from the bearing of the motor , the size of 608RS you will save alot of money than changing the whole motor . Just opinion 😊
