Mr Silva, you are a genius sir. Was having difficulty figuring out how I would predrill each baluster hole with the correct angle so that they're plumb. Thanks to Mr Silva I now know exactly how to do it. Pay no attention to the other clowns and their comments about this video, just listen to Mr Silva. THANK YOU again for this amazing video and keep up the great work!!!

This book was a great resource for ideas, practical advice ru-vid.comUgkx-b91_bYU48sOwHX-XC49tRRXRxcnOmZm and pro tips I purchased the plans for the 10'x16' colonial and used them for the basics and made my own modifications. I built my shed for storage and lawn equipment, but decided to sheath and side it in case I ever wanted to add insulation and turn it into a shop or bunkhouse. I poured over this book all winter while I planned and found it to be the all-around best shed book out there.

I've been a carpenter/contractor for 30 years...I don't mind doing deck rails but; for interior stairways with the newels and goosenecks and volutes etc...Screw that! I always subbed those out to guys that do it all the time...Straight runs were never a problem, like we have in our rowhomes in philly but; those mainline staircases are masterpieces...Oh, no, not me...:)...

At the bottom of my stairs, I have planned (and already purchased) a curved, circular end railing, that will hold a few more balusters. The old stairway didn't have this, so I am very concerned! if you drill a 1/4" hole for the lag portion of the railing bolt and then drill a 1/2" hole for the threaded portion in the other piece of wood, you have some "play" so that the two holes do not have to align perfectly as you can move one of the rails to the exact location prior to gluing. Tightening the nut still kicks my butt.

Or simply drill a 1-inch deep pilot hole into the handrail end, then cut off a 3/16th profile wafer where you just drilled the hole. put that wafer against the other handrail end to use as a guide where you need to drill a matching hole. So easy.

I have the same setup I've put off completing for years. This helps. but... 1- I can't find spindles long enough ( because the spindles on the back of the tread must be longer than standard length) and 2- spindles are tapered so the ones on the back of the tread will require a smaller hole at the rail? If anyone knows of a more detailed video of landing spindles on treads I would love to see one :)

I'm doing mine at the moment and I bought all my balusters together, the same length. As I cut each to fit, the ones going up the stairs are of course shorter, and since they are cut lower from the top, they give they Wierd illusion that they are much thicker at the top. Which they now are! The lowest at cut to 38, while a couple are 32. Should I have bought different size balusters, also that when I cut to fit they look better to the eye? I don't think I'll get an answer in time but maybe it'll help someone else
@zcarfanatic
@zcarfanatic Год назад
Keen observation. I never thought about that. I am doing the same and also bought my balusters already. Likely no one but you would ever notice. i can see it above now that you point it out. That would be a great argument for cutting at the bottom vs the top.
