How to Install Handrail and Stair Spindles (Staircase Renovation Ep 4) - Finish Carpentry

I didn't understand how to install handrails and stair spindles, so I hired a professional to coach me through it. Doug Watson from Country Lane Woodshop (www.countrylanewoodshop.ca) has a lot of experience with this and you will see how we installed the handrail. After some coaching from Doug, I continued with the work to install the stair spindles.
The installation of the old handrails was done by the builder of our house about 15 years ago. The installer fastened the top end of the angled handrails by drilling a hole in from the top surface and countersinking a screw, before inserting a wooden plug to hide the hole as best as possible. I didn't want to install my newly finished handrail the same way as the wooden plug would always be visible, and I wouldn't be happy with that quality of work.
Before Doug arrived, he asked me to have all the parts ready and to order some hardware. I made and installed a shoe rail, which is the bottom board that has a groove for the spindles to sit in. I also made fillet strips that would fit snugly in the groove and flush with the surface. I also the underside of the railing so the groove would allow the stair spindles to fit in snugly and I made matching fillet strips for the handrail too.
The hardware I ordered was for the angled railing to be secured to the newel post. I used Zip Bolts:
Amazon link - amzn.to/2EAqlQu
🇨🇦 Canadian Amazon link - amzn.to/2IPwdKQ
note: purchases made with this link help fund our video production
Zip Bolts are designed specifically for this. I was impressed with how well they pull in the handrail to the newel post. When finishing the last few cranks on the bolt, the railing actually lifted up at the bottom end from the tension.
The stair spindle installation would have been difficult for me to figure out without Doug's coaching. The most challenging part was determining the length of the spindles on the angled sections when they were plumb. I ended up making an extendable spindle jig that I could put in place, make sure it was plumb, and then lock it to length. I then transferred this jig to a spindle to draw my cut lines. The jig needs to be centered on the spindle, so by adding measurements on each end, it became easy to center the spindle.
Once I had the stair spindles cut, I could put them in place with a fillet strip in between each one. This let me see how the start and end of the run looked so I could get equal spacing between the spindles and the newel posts. Once I cut my starter fillet strip, I was ready to install the run for stair spindles. I glued them in place with carpenter’s glue and if the spindle wasn't a snug fit, I also drove a finishing nail through the spindle into the handrail.
This was a project where I learned a few new things. I enjoyed working with Doug and learning from his experience. This would have taken a lot more time (and likely more material) if I had to figure out how to do this on my own.

How did you find the angle for the handrail from top to down end to fit perfectly and also the angle spindles? Having a hard time and not much room for mistakes
@HomeImprovementWoodworking
@HomeImprovementWoodworking 4 года назад
Hi Gary. Yes, this can be a stressful few cuts to make to avoid making mistakes. Here's how to work out your dimensions: - Determine the hight of your handrail - measure and mark the height at the top and bottom on the newel posts. This gives you reference points to work with. - have some help holding up the handrail (or clamp blocks to the newel posts to hold it up), then measure the angle - trim the top end to that angle so you can test your work. Hold it up and confirm you have the right angle - hold the railing in place, mark the length of the railing and make the final cut I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have another question. Cheers. Scott

Most turned spindles like these are designed so that the lower squared off part of the spindle is longer than the upper square part I.e. I would have left the bottom at three inches and the top at two but it's your staircase so it's up to you.

Yes, the Zip Bolt was for the top end of the railing and a screw for the bottom end as you can easily drill a pilot hole and dive in a screw there. In my miter saw, I use a 64 tooth, 10 inch saw blade. Does that answer your question? Scott.

Scott at 11:01 regarding the spindles and jig. Wouldn't the spindles be the same length as you move along the angled portion of the stairs which is why you mentioned using the stop block so that you have consistent cuts for all the spindles. Trying to understand if the jig was meant to establish the length of just the first spindle or whether the length of each additional spindle actually changes?
@HomeImprovementWoodworking
@HomeImprovementWoodworking 4 года назад
Good question Matt. I used this jig to layout the top and bottom cut marks on one spindle. I wanted to make sure I centered it the way I wanted. This was my way of figuring out how to do that. All the spindles were cut to the same length using a stop block. Does that answer your question? Scott

@HomeImprovementWoodworking
@HomeImprovementWoodworking 3 года назад
No, stairs aren't on a 45 degree angle. You need to measure the angle using a level as a guide for your particular staircase.
@greennation323
@greennation323 5 лет назад
hi whats the degree did you cut the railing?..
@HomeImprovementWoodworking
@HomeImprovementWoodworking 5 лет назад
I didn't write down the measurement, but if memory serves me correctly it was 41 degrees. It can be different for each staircase. The way you figure this out is to lay a board across the stair treads going up the stairs. Then use a level to get a level line and measure the angle between the level and the board. That's the same angle you want your railing to be. Does that help?

Using formulas is going to leave you with a pile of parts cut at the wrong angles. So: Place the spindle where it goes, next to the angled facia at the bottom. Put a level on the side of the spindle and plumb it. While holding it plumb, scribe a line across the bottom of the spindle (or a story board) along the top of the angled board. There's your angle. Leave the math book, calculator, and the triangulation formulas on the table. Use a level and a pencil. That's how you do it correctly so all the spindles are straight and plumb.

It makes me SO ANGRY when people screw down straight through the handrail! Especially in hardwood. Such a DIY/Rookie move. You should not be able to see any fixings like that on a finished staircase - it is such an important visual feature/compliment to a home, like awesome furniture. If you had absolutely no choice, at least fill with a matching wooden pellet so it looks intentional!

Not the best way to do spindals and definitely the wrong way for fillet on the straight rail I do this for a living everything from curved rails to volutes

If your wall is out by doing the fillet that way your spindals will be also upstairs

Put top rail on level each spindle inside of rail and pin nail them in place measure/mark the size of each fillet and number them for miner discrepancy also next time glue and screw your nosing down underneath where the spindles go then use spindle dowels and screw the in that way you can use screws under your post to perfectly level the nosing so your post sits flush and straight and your nosing is also flush to the flooring

You didn't set the spindles at 99mm 4inches which his the maximum gap. To stop infants trapping their heads. You should not be giving advice if you don't know the regulations.

If that guys assistance is what you are calling a professional, you are screwed before you even start. There are so many things he was telling you that are wrong, it isn't even funny. The fact he uses the end of the tape measure to measure off of versus the 1" mark, goes to show the lack of experience right there.

@@HomeImprovementWoodworking I'll reply later today. Just as an FYI, I am a professional, high-end custom cabinet maker/furniture builder of 29 years and I've been self-employed for 23… so u don't think I'm some Butthead talking smack on the Internet who doesn't know what he's talking about.
