Thank you for the no nonsense, easy to follow, and wonderful video footage of replacing an alternator. I followed your video and was successful with the job. All the other YT videos were very inferior to your level of excellence!!! By the way, What does "non pd" mean?
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 8 лет назад
Thank you :) Non PD means that this engine is not "Pump Düse" as later models had, but still common rail. A bit different fuel injection system. Earlier models of Mk4 1.9tdi had common rail system. On PD engines alternator is more at the top and has to be removed from the top. Now VW/AUDI group giving up on PD and came back to common rail, like my VW Sharan. Hi.my friend I have an audi a3 tdi 55 reg . It needs a new thermostat and temperature sensor . Do I really have to get the alternator out? The thermostat is kind of behind it Secondly I also have an oil leak. It seems to me that the oil is coming downwards from behind the engine where the turbo is. I don't know whether is it head gasket or the valve cover gasket which is between the engine block. It also seems to me that the driver shaft seal is prbably leaking too. Its either the drive shaft or the main seal inside the gearbox. What's your take on this
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 2 года назад
Hello Mumtaz. I'm afraid I won't be able to help you. Recently, I've lost all my VAG manuals apart from Skoda Octavia Mk3, so I have no idea what the thermostat situation is on A3. As for oil leaks, it seems like it needs to be seen by mechanic that can tell what's going on. Meanwhile, I can recommend a website with Audi manuals that come from manufacturer: erwin.audi.com/erwin/showHome.do

It depends what 1.9tdi you have, they were different - common rail, PD engines. Like on my 2005 Audi 2.0tdi it was done from the top. In my experience - it's either from the top (if it's meant to) or bottom, I don't think there will be choice - it's pretty tight.

I did this on my Golf 4 ALH engine (looks identical like the car in the video) and I can say that your video really helped. I had some issues dislodging the alternator from it's original position (pain in the a*s). I managed to take it up from the top by removing the tube that goes into the EGR valve, moved out the way the hydraulic pump like in your video and also I removed the hose that goes into the thermostat. The oil dipstick and it's sheath had to be removed as well. Was a bit annoying but I managed. Hope my subscription help, keep doing what you are doing :)

Nice video - my battery light was intermittently coming on. Turned out to be voltage regulator which is inside the alternator. I also removed the fan on the right side of the car, and the alternator just fell out. The fan comes out with 3 Torx 30 screws. No need to unplug the electrical connector. Just let the fan hang down out of the way. You are thorough and organized. People should take a look at your show notes on your website. Thanks for the video.

Hello mate, Great educational video, thanks for that. Just quick question. I'm having a problem: In cold day started the car drove very little journey 3 mins, stopped at shop, then tried to start wouldn't start at all. Called breakdown Engineer, who came and jumpstarted the car, tested and turned out the alternator wasn't charging hence drained the Battery, but when he put rev up little higher something around 1500rmp or above and let it go on idle running it started charging. he told me there's intermittent alternator problem and left. I have tested since then few days with multi meter and every time before starting Battery read at 12.6v (which is perfect), when started and engine running 11.5-12.6v (wasn't charging) but I revved up and let it go starts charging at 13.5-14.2v. My question is: is it brushes? How do i identify where is the problem? Whether Alternator brushes or there's any cable connection problem such as break between battery and alternator? My car VW Polo 9n 1.4 diesel 2003. Having seen your video (too many other videos) I've come to conclusion that my problem is with brushes. Is it possible removing V regulator without removing whole Alternator( looking your second video abt brushes replacement it looks as though it could be removed while alternator is intact and attached to bracket. Sorry for lengthy comment and questions. I really appreciate your help and advice on this.
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 6 лет назад
If alternator is sometimes charging and sometimes not charging, likely it would be a sign of worn out brushes. Broken or disconnected wire tends to be permanent problem. The other sign - if it's not charging, if you wack it (don't break your alternator though ;) ) brushes may catch a contact and start charging again, but when brushes worn out a bit more wacking doesn't help. If I was you, I would take voltage regulator out and had a look at brushes. Whether it is possible to take it out without removing alternator - I don't know, it depends on car. On my Sharan it's pretty much impossible, that Golf in the video - not sure, didn't try it, Polo no idea. If you are able to do it - good for you, if not take the alternator out. Also when brushes rub against copper rings on alternator's central shaft, they also wear it out a little by making grooves on them. Those rings are also replaceable, depending how bad are they. There must be videos on RU-vid on how to replace those rings.

WheelsAndMotors Hey man, you're a Star. Thanks for taking your time and explaining in detail. I'm new to this and never done in depth car mechanical works except basic maintenance. Hence i am bit afraid trying to remove the alternator and ending up messing everything. Reason i asked is that i dont have a garage and proper tools suck jack standing or professional tools(getting rachet and socket tools not a problem, will buy them). I had a look few times under the bonnet and to me looks ok and doable to remove it from above ( under the bonnet) perhaps just V regulator I'll try remove only if not then whole alternator. I forgot to add another symptom which might give more idea. Battery light doesnt come on at all. Usually when u turn the ignition it should come on and disappear unless alternator broken Battery warning light should remain on when engine running. Right now, even when i rev up and alternator starts charging I don't have Battery light on at all on both ignition and when start the car. Does it say anything to u? Thanks again
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 6 лет назад
Not sure about no battery sign and why is that, sorry. Normally, red battery sign comes up, when engine is running, but alternator is not charging. I wouldn't say that removing alternator is such a big mechanical job.. But again, it depends on car and how tight it is under the bonnet. That Golf in the video is pretty simple, although you need to have proper gear to stay safe under the car. Please never get under the car using jack only! My Sharan was a bit of struggle last summer, I had to move compressor out of the way (didn't need to disconnect pipes though) and some other bits.. but once you get on it, it doesn't seem so complicated - just put it back as it was before. Don't be afraid of your car :) I know someone with 1st gen of Mercedes ML - they have water cooled alternators, to remove alternator he had to disconnect coolant pipes.. Crazy :) Anyway, if you like to start DIYing on your car, I can recommend you really good software/manuals called Elsawin. It's manuals originally produced for dealerships of VAG (VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda). Really good - will tell you step by step how to remove alternator on your exact model. Just search for Elsawin on eBay.
