How to Replace Front Differential GMC Yukon Chevy Tahoe Suburban Avalanche GM GMC Truck SUV

In this video, I show how I replaced the front differential in this 2011 GMC Yukon. This truck has around 110,000 miles, and had a loud whining noise coming from the front differential when the transmission was set to "auto" mode. Setting it to "2wd" would make the drivetrain whine go away. This problem happened because it was kept in "auto" mode its entire life. If the truck was kept in "2wd" mode instead, the front differential likely would not have worn out. So after this repair, it will be kept in "2wd" and only switched to "auto" when the road conditions deem it necessary.
This procedure is likely very similar for many GMC and Chevy Trucks, Tahoe, Suburban, Denali, Avalanche, Escalade, Silverado and Sierra.

Great tutorial have to do this on my escalade. how severe would you consider the frame rust on the shown vehicle? Does it affect the structural strength? Are the gmt900 frames known for any rusting out parts?

THIS IS THE BEST ON YOU TUBE! THANK YOU! DID YOU REPLACE THE BEARINGS AND SEALS?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 года назад
Thank you! I didn’t replace the bearings or seals. I just heaved the whole thing in and drove it. That being said, it may be smart to do bearings and seals as long as you know that the diff itself is in good shape. It would suck to put bearings and seals in and then find out the replacement diff is junk.

Thanks for posting this video. Did you end up using a jack to lower the diff or to raise the replacement into place?

Great video. I have an 07 avalance that was doing the same whirring noise when I left off the gas, got up to certain speeds. Mechanic told me put in 2wd. I just changed the fluid, it's better but the noise is still present. My questions are 1. is a junk yard dif worth it 2.would leaving it in 2wd cause also cause quick deterioration like being kept on auto 3. Why would leaving on auto cause the front to just go bad, not the back as well? 4. Could you fill the new dif up with fluid before mounting? Seeing how much of a pain it is to fill? Thanks in advance!

Did you have to put the vehicle in neutral to remove the front driveshaft from the front diff? Also, did you spin the cv axles as you were loosening the 6 bolts on their flanges?
@WiringRescue

Sorry for the delayed response - I actually don’t remember what I did because this was a while ago. I may have spun the axles and driveshaft, but I just don’t remember. :/

I had to put mine in neutral and then pry the end of the u joints out with a pry bar. 1a auto has an excellent video tutorial, i looked up 02 tahoe frint driveshaft removal and it was the first google result. Helped me a ton - 2002 tahoe 5.3 4wd

Dealer says there's PLAY in my front dif. Truck drives fine tho. Can I go forward with underneath rust remediation and spray before fixing front dif?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 года назад
Well, it depends. If the front diff isn’t making a bunch of noise now, it could start soon, or maybe it won’t. If you are paying someone to fix it, you may want to get an estimate to fix it just in case it’s more than the truck is worth (depends on the trucks condition and if you are getting a new vs. used diff). If the repair is an acceptable price, go ahead and have the rust situation done. If the repair is going to outweigh the value of the truck, rust repair would be a bad investment.

I just did same thing on my 2012 silverado with 8.25 but im having a problem, the front wheels seem to spin faster. Why would this happen is i swapped it with anothee 8.25 front diff?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 года назад
It has a different gear ratio. The external housing can be the same, but with different gears on the inside. You’ll have to swap yours over, or get a different front differential altogether. Sorry about the bad news. That’s a bummer.

Honestly I’m not sure. You would probably need to keep the axle ends going through the hubs. So you make need to take the axles apart. But it seems somewhat doable to me.

love how Americans describe the metric-size bolts 13 mill bolt 15 mill nat 21mill bolt how you call the Philips head metric bolt or flat-head metric bolt what happens if you need stud is 13 mill 15 mill maybe 21mill and where you going to find 13mm bolt or 15 or 17 or 19 or 11 or 9 WTF got your self CALIPER this is just simple hardware
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 3 месяца назад
The video is about swapping a front differential, and I’m telling people what size the heads of the bolts are so they know what sockets they need. I am not talking about the stud sizes because those don’t matter for this job. Vernier calipers have no use in a front diff swap.
