1A auto is honestly the best. They taught me how to time my 05 civic as my first dabble into an engine bay. If you’re new and stressed about not knowing what to do, watch this video a few time before going at it and watch it while you go. You got it no issue.

Got me about to go out here and show both my Husband and my Uncle they're just being big babies about drum brakes😂 I got stiffed with "I don't even want to talk about it" and "watch a video bet you'll change your mind" pfft. Coming from someone whom has always ENJOYED taking things apart and putting them back together? This looks easy as hell. Lol there's a reason 1A is my go to for everything. Thanks y'all!

after sitting here with my drum brakes for all day and feeling just like your husband, i can promise you that youtube videos make things look easier 100% of the time. drum brakes are one of those things that were invented solely to infuriate ppl

I am usually a big fan of A1 Auto, but not today. I am now texting friends for rides to the hardware store bc I couldn't get the top spring with the pliers and now I can't get the horseshoe. It's a free video, so A1 doesn't owe the world anything, but man, a bigger disclaimer on tools would have saved me the stress I am in now.

Excellent video. It's incredibly helpful to see this before tackling the job. However, there's one important step that was missed. Before re-installing the new shoes, clean the backing plate good with some brake cleaner. Then apply some brake lubricant to the six contact points where the back edge of the shoes slide against (there are bosses on the backing plate). Skipping this step could cause some noisy rear brakes as the metal surfaces will be rubbing against each other.

Yeah brakes are mostly all similar. But this is for 01-05. Why would you watch a video for a car you don’t have?.. there are videos for 08 here..
@johnwireson115
@johnwireson115 6 лет назад
The two difficult steps are removing the top spring(even with vice grips) and undoing the horseshoe retaining clip for the parking brake lever. Video makes it easier than it seems to remove the top spring and was surprised he did not pop a wheel cylinder boot and squirt out brake fluid in the process. Probably safer and much easier to use a spring tool.

Is there a special tool to get that one bolt off from the inside of the brake wheel cylinder? I used a 10mm open end wrench but all it did is round the bolt and I camt get a closed end wrench in there to grip the bolt better because it's so close to the spindle

Hi there. So I watched this vid and was comfortable enough to try a hand at the job. All was well until I noticed that 2 of the 4 back brake pads had an extra post on them. If you put them on a certain way the post got in the way of the arm that attaches to the brake pads. Does anyone know what the purpose of that extra post is and if it suggest a particular orientation of the pads? That was a bit of a curve ball, and I kept thinking I was doing something wrong. Thank you! - Phil

i bought my 2001 new and its a new model year, my parking brake lever would never snap down, the dealer didnt know what was wrong with it, after finally replacing the rear shoes 20 years later i found the problem, i used some snap shots of your video of the parking brake cable spring and i originally thought the bracket should have been crimped on the spring but stopping your video at times i noticed the bracket was not crimped and my conclusion and the problem was the spring is too short lol no recall on it, you can remove the parking brake arm without needing to compress the spring is slides back and forth lol

Pretty sure a 5x1.25 inch bolt will fit into the drums holes and push the drum away from the hub and then you won’t have to beat on the drum and “ square”it just my opinion and also I woulda used mechanics wire to hold the piston together

Just saw your comment but it's probably too late at this point. The same thing happened when I did both rear drums after watching this video. My pedal felt very mushy so I bled the brakes from both rear drums and both front calipers and that fixed the issue.

That's is the easy part. Try getting the rear brake line off the wheel cylinder and the brake hose when the brakes haven't been changed for years. The nut won't budge after lots of lubricant overnight, hammering the nuts to crack then free. The line just twisted off/broke and it won't come out of the brake hose or the cylinder. Any ideas?

You keep covering the work point with your hands, not allowing the viewer to see the nuance of your connecting parts and steps. 😢 I wish your knowledge of the process would translate to a better camera angle view, for close up instruction. You explain well. As an older shade tree, with memory challenges, I had to stop and start dozens of times. If you chaptered your steps, it would help immensely. I do have memory damage, which makes the simplest procedures complicated and confusing for me, so, I need videos to hold my hand. I hope you take my observations as positive feedback, because, I am truly thankful for your work. I'm just frustrated.

There is no "E" brake on any car ever made what he called E brake is a PARKING brake. Failed to use brake lube on any of the parts that need it, will likely squeak. Did not check to see if the wheel cylinder was leaking brake fluid. For the untrained installer it was an informative video, not professional.
