How to respond to someone who is insulting you

I would remain cool, calm and collected. and whatever you do, don't let this person know that they have gotten to you. Instead, focus on being positive, and not getting defensive. Remember, they are trying to bring you down to elevate themselves.

This is great advice if you are dealing with reasonable people. There are some people...you just need to slowly back away from and never make human contact with again. lol

People who act like this toward others are looking for some sort of reaction from their targets, like a reflection from a mirror. If you don't respond to what they say, or at least throw them off by giving an unexpected reaction, they will eventually leave you alone and look for more willing victims.

If a person is rude and disrepectful remove them from your life immediately,if you don,t they will bring chaos and drama to your life. They are eventually going to bring a lot of trouble your way.

You start laughing at first. Most of the time those people won't really understand why you're laughing, and at some point that misunderstanding will make them stop laughing. The best way to deal with them is to give them a straight look in the eye, and to fixate your eyes on the guy/girl who said the insult and as said in the video, ask them for the point of their statement. Most of the time I find myself in a situation like this, I ask them to elaborate it. When they ask you what do you mean, you can always say something like "You've just said an opinion of yours, which doesn't make it a fact". They may try to sound smart and say "Well, it is a fact, you're that and that", and in that moment you respond with something like "A fact needs arguments to make it valid, you didn't state any argument, you've just stated your opinion, which doesn't make it valid at all". After that, if you've left them speechless, if you're for example sitting with them in a bar, you can always stand up and leave the place. They might call you names as you leave, but that shouldn't touch you, because in that situation, you outsmarted them, and the only way they can think of getting back on their feet is to continue throwing insults at you, but you should know that it's because of their weakness. :) All in all, you shouldn't be paranoid of these situations, but you should always be prepared for a quick response if it happens. Don't let it come to you, think of an smart answer for their insult and you'll be great.

@@lovelyjubblu by watching some videos, i discovered a shorter way instead of arguing with them that what they said is an opinion not a fact, just say “i can accept your faulty perception of me” or “your perceptions are your perceptions”

I was verbally attacked by a family member, she dressed it up as advise and that she cared for me. I beat myself up for months because I felt I did not stood up or defended myself. I even told her I liked that she said what was in her mind. (what is wrong with me?) I read somewhere that some people process slow to conversations that are uncomfortable to them. When it comes to family members it seems that I don't know what to say back when im being disrespected, is like I disconnect myself from the conversation, then I think about it word for word and is too late to say something and I start to hate myself for not saying one darn thing to defend myself.

j lo yes that's because you felt so embarrassed you couldn't focus on giving a good response and they know this about you. When we're Caught off guard it's hard to think.. Next time just tel her to shut up and stop being so rude in front of many people. I guarantee other Members will be glad you told her her this. I'd often get my revenge on these people when they're alone and no Audience to inflate Them.. If anybody loves to pull you up on stuff with a room full of people, then usually they don't operate alone very well. Next time Just say I'll get back to about this in private... Nows not the time BIG MOUTH. And write down all your answers to the hurtful remarks I guarantee they won't make a habit of doing this again. Knowing full well you'll get them alone and nag them to death about being an Oxygen thief 👌 Good Luck sweet girl.. Greeting from London

Or they laugh and change the topic which actually can lead to a decent convo. We’ve literally reached the point of general passive aggressiveness as a society, like everyone either talks overly nice to everyone or rude to everyone publicly. Also, with how aggressive we are regarding character on a societal level, light teasing between friends are welcome. -the opinion no one asked for 🤗

Thank you so much for making this video, Marie. I am currently being verbally bullied at school by a girl (who shall remain anonymous). Everyday this girl will spread lies and insult me, and then claims that she's the victim. I have tried telling my parents but they say that it's not bullying, it just being mean. Hi Marie, I do agree with you that some people don't deserve that we spent our time to answer them, but sometimes it can be understood as we are cowards, and we shouldn't always leave people disrespect us.So sometimes we should face the impolite people and force them to show respect .

Inconsiderate people want a reaction that why it's best to ignore them. Or smirk or roll your eyes. Or say excuse me lets keep it polite and mature. It's best to keep it polite and respectable and mind our own business . To avoid inconsiderate people. People are inconsiderate because they are not thinking about people's feelings. And they are less respectful and sympathetic and more self focused. And act like it's all about them. It's best not to take them seriously that's what they want. Think whatever who cares it's their behaviour and it's their problem not mine. We will be less stressed if we care less.

Hi Miss Dubuque, I want to say Thank you very much. I learnt that anolgoy of life is like tennis. If you play tennis you could understand that, there so many people would try to pull you down by insulting the cool people. Additionally no matter what theres people that are always going to put you down. So now it is your choice wether to be nice or just as nasty as them. So back of the anolgoy of tennis, when your oppenent hit the ball hard, you gotta hit the ball soft with a follow though and eventually it will mess up your oppenents big attack. So in conclusion, it is your choice to choose to be rude and to hit the ball agressively or kill them with kindness with a soft follow through. :)

It's probably easier to walk away from or ignore someone putting you down in text messages or over the phone. I should have just ignored their texts and shut off my phone

i did this today and I felt so empowered. My friend said 'capricious much' when i told him that I forgot I had something else going on and I had to cancel on him. I was feeling pretty insecure at the time. I wanted to explain my actions and apologize until he told me he didn't mean what he said.I wanted to tell him "I'm not capricious! what do you mean capricious!" I wanted to tell him that I didn't want to deal with his insults because I was feeling insecure but then I realized that probably would just escalate the situation more. Once I actually realized that it was an insult and not actually about me and about how he felt, things started to change. I looked up the definition of capricious and realized that in his eyes it was partially true so I just agreed with him and said "yeah, i'm probably capricious." best move ever. and i don't feel insecure anymore :D

My feelings were so hurt that I went outside into the bathroom and I balled my eyes out. I didn’t want him to see that It got to me but it really hurt my feelings. When my friend came and talk to me and said that my audition was great and then I did a great job. And the joke was on him because I’m doing a trio with two other girls.(The one that was auditioning after me was in the trio). Later he apologized to me, and then I felt really awkward. But all my friends told me that I did really well and that my audition was great and I was very happy that I’m now in the trio.

But I feel like the reason I get angry is because this is unacceptable behaviour. I feel like I'd have the same reaction if the person was insulting someone else. I'd think, that person is not very nice and shouldn't be insulting that other person. They shouldn't let their own insecurities bleed out and bring others down, to make themselves feel better. It's like stealing; like a lazy person stealing from a hard working person. And so I'd be quite stony faced around that person in future; I'd be short with them. I definitely wouldn't want to show that person any signs of fondness or efforts that I care in any way. I'd just be cold and professional with them in future. Maybe that's not the best way to deal with someone you're angry with, but it's the best method that works for me, for now.

Andre, it really is OK not to have a best friend, actually a good thing. Because you get too dependent on a best friend and don't branch out. And I bet a lot of kids don't hang out with other people outside of school because they are really busy with sports and homework. Try to get involved in the school as much as you can. Join clubs, sports, intramurals, whatever they offer. Smile and wave to the nice kids.It makes you look approachable. And ask questions about homework, tests, etc.

My bad experiences leads me to find this video. I was so sad to see this video in late. My story is I visited my boyfriend's house, everything looks so positive..people love to talk to me and pay me attention. And then the positive atmosphere turn into negative suddenly when people always love so much to pick me many details and then had gossip behind my back. A sister always mock at me, look down at me, disrespect at me. As a calmed person, I never responded her even though I feel uncomfortable with her impolite behavior..I rather to stay calm and not act like her....you know..it's very hard time to be with a unquestionably rude person. I know this comment is 7 months old, but I feel compelled to answer cz You're responding exactly how I did towards a rude person. I wasted my time thinking why instead of "WHY NOT?" because people have different value systems. They're probably intimidated by you, your youth/beauty and have some level of contempt because their family member/brother likes you a lot. They care so much to put you DOWN because deep down in their minds you're in this elevated pedestal. You need to understand that people don't care about those who they think of as non threatening. It's those who trigger their insecurities that bother them... you are triggering their insecurities for some reason...but that's not your fault, but you need to speak up loudly and firmly that you're NOT going to put up with insults or ill treatment and NOTHING they say is going to bring you down.

I would rather just ignore so that they feel silly being ignored.

But that could also backfire and they could assume that you're not good enough to think of a comeback.

What if someone tries to put you down indirectly in a crowd, she pretends talking to them and tries to say for example how old fashioned is to be like you,

I wish I knew this when an ugly male co-worker tried to do this to me, when I refused his advances and love interest. Sigh. I was fired because of this (the bos liked him, not me). I was naturally friendly, and being taken advantaged by this ugly old guy. Sob. Thanks for your youtube site.

Marie, I'm tired of a male coworker who is negatively obsessed with me. I joined 3 months back and he instantly started talking about me being rude (I'm quiet and shy). He's loud and got his team to be cold to me. He stands right near my chair and makes bad remarks about me and everything I do. I once was putting lipbalm on and he stared at me creepily till I moved away. I don't like negativity, I don't like him. I feel I'm his negative sexual obsession. The more I'm ignoring, the worse it gets.

I don't think people are always intimidated, they do want to elevate themselves, but they have a need to cause waves, or they need what all the narc videos call "supply"... don't give it to them. But, this does not mean you have to remain responseless... I am working on perfecting a look, a laugh and an "OK". This sends a message that you are not going to take the bait and the laugh (not a forced sarcastic or fake cackle, but as though you are authentically amused at a one liner from a sit com, like Cheers) the laugh and the OK actually works to subconsciously diffuse other possible responses you might otherwise have. Although if the person is particularly snide another response might be in order, like saying something really off the wall and totally unexpected, especially if others are in ear shot... "that reminds me, I'm supposed to pick up a bag of My Nanas on my way home." Hopefully, they heard the interaction and might find that funny... some people really appreciate that kind of humor and it does not take much wit, or quick thinking because it's all about being off the wall.

I found this video, watched it and now I'm like ok maybe I should have watched this earlier because today one of my colleagues insulted me by saying that I only have my head for getting my hair cut. In other words: You are too stupid to thing straight. She was doing so because I promised her to do sth for her but totally forgot about it. Although it was pretty important. I told her I was sorry. Then she was yelling at me telling me I would just say that to save my own Ass and I should Stop talking and that she did not want to be responsable for solving my mustakes. She also insisted that she is going to tell our boss.

I was talking to 2 guys I kind of know i'll call them 'James' and 'Dave' one night when I was talking to 'James' as he was leaving to go he said 'I probably wont know you next time I see you' and his friend 'Dave' the guy I sort of know said 'oh you will you’ll recognize her nose'. I'm not the most confident person and its people like him that have me the way I am. It sort of hurt my feelings. I haven't spoken to Dave since. Am I right not to talk and ignore him after he said that comment.
