I've been fishing Pennsylvania for many years. Like 50. I use a double surgeon knot on my tippet materials. And only a sixth turn improved clinch. They don't fail me. You're so pretty bomb-proof
This guy doesn’t care about teaching us about a nymph rig. He just wants us to see what a total badass he is at tying knots.......and it’s totally working!!
And letting his trimmings litter the river. It always amazes me how the people with knowledge and experience teach the new anglers it's ok to leave your trash on the riverbank
John, it’s good to see you at home and out in your element. You have a knack for explaining and describing the elements of hunting and fishing. I recall back in the mid eighties, while under your expertise, I learned to hone the art of reading and running technical whitewater; based in large, on your natural technical skills and ability to communicate. You should put together some more instructional videos on the craft of fly fishing. Enjoyed!
Just would like to comment that you might be sitting down in this video but you haven't been sitting on your duff the last 30 years. You don't need a third hand, either, when you got a mouth as ambidextrous as yours. Great video, but one has to watch it several times to get the drift of sorts. It's the lengths that are very specific. You've got it down, so It's very worth while information that you are sending. I have never used an indicator, nor have I ever fished nymphs very much. I really like surface action, but realize I'm missing out on a lot, so this video gives me some very good information to utilize. Thanks.
Brand new to fly fishing, this was a fantastic tutorial. I had no idea THATS how you have multiple fly's going at once. Very cool. Does this work with a nymph and a streamer? Or maybe an emerger with a nymph behind it?
im confused with all the line you put on all i got is tapered leeter and some flys and a pole please help idk how to rig my pole i dont have all the line and didnt undertsand why you put so much line that double fly set up at end made sense thoe
It's a good idea to use one otherwise you won't really know when the nymph is being inhaled by the trout. Artificial flies are quickly rejected by Trout. Nymphing is a fishing by sight approach since you can't feel it in the rod. Without the indicator you'd have to pay attention to the end of the fly line. However, once your skills have been developed you can fish without the indicator. But even very good fly fisherman use an indicator just because it makes you so much more efficient.
This is a great video. I'm relatively new to fly fishing and sometimes it hard to decide how to rig a line from top to bottom. Some of the reviewers here are pretty unpleasant people. Many ways to skin a cat and most of them aren't "wrong" because someone else says there's another way of doing things. Just subscribed to Blackfoot River Outfitters and look forward to more great videos. One question: what fly line were you using? Thanks!
Watching this was intimidating. Think I'm going to shore cast on the lake some more before I wander down to the river. It's been almost 15 yrs since I fished with passion, best not jump into this and lose my flies and patience. Thanks for the reminder.
+Dustin Thompson no way dude just go for it, gotta practice and youll figure it out. it seems complicated at first but it really is an easy set up once you try it.
Ya man, a yr later and I'm quite a bit more comfortable with knots... not there yet but I understand terminology waay more and have an easier time computing what I see into a left-handed practice.
I have a question, where did you get red fly line? I've been looking everywhere! Just keep finding it in a eight weight Pike. I need a five weight line. Much appreciated.
This fine and well said, but I vastly prefer to fish without weight. I almost never do. I do agree that building your own leaders is the way to go. Check out A.J. McClains formulas for leaders in his great book.
Great video, with some great ideas; I'm going to start saving my old leaders. This saves money an eliminates some of the non-biodegradeable mono material that we anglers generate. My only concern is that it appears that you are dropping the clippings on the bank; let's leave no trace!
As a beginner, I'm starting to realize by the time I'm done ying as these leaders, tippets and flies... I could have at least caught a fish by then. I regret getting into fly fishing. It's more complicated than it seems. I get the concept but doing all this for one fish. I don't know anymore.
You can certainly just tie a dry fly to the end of a leader and go fishing. Don't get discouraged. This particular video is describing a technique that takes more set up time than the single dry fly method.
Not as practical as a 9' tapered leader ending in 4x, especially in smaller streams. I add about 2' of 5 or 6x depending on conditions and nymph being used. Yarn works well as an easily adjustable indicator.
What's the advantage to using a fly rod when fishing weighted baits like nymphs? It seems like it would be more effective to use an ultralight spinning setup. I fish small, tight streams in the southern appalachians and it's hard enough to cast dry flies with my fly rod.
No way youre going to cast a nymph anywhere near as far with a spinner set up. Nor will you be able to watch or mend the line like you could with fly line
Not to try to sound like a know it all but when I am overwhelmed by too much information which this video is definitely for me, I save it to watch later and make sure I watch it a few more times. Also having my rod handy and running through what is being demo'ed is a big help.
Well the first place you'll want to begin is by returning to the fourth grade. Ask your teacher to help you learn to speak English; e.g. ask the teacher what punctuation is, and how to spell basic words such as "leader" and "though". Once you speak and read English, you can do a google search and read some articles to answer all the questions you just tried to ask.
Wrong, never tie one fly to the bend in the hook of another. Tie that Surgeon's Knot but don't clip both ends, tie a fly on the tip of the extra. Someone did a video about it.
This is bullshit. Buy a Hanak french leader and loop it to your backing. That's right!-- backing. You don't need fly line with a proper french leader. Buy an inline floating indicator that has tippett rings on the tags. This is a contraption he's making here. Waste of time.
Always interesting to hear other perspectives, though we tend to keep things a little more friendly. We switch to different methods through the day and we have had a good amount of success with this. Glad you have a way to fish that makes you happy (well.. not happy) but have fun out there!
