Thanks for watching!
Started two or three cuttings of my new Lemon Basil that is medicinal and also GENOVESE & Nufar Basil in a quart jar but I use Crystal GEIZER water because the city water here is very chlorinated. I actually do the water method outside on my front porch area with fig cuttings off my trees, bluebird hibiscus cuttings, etc. and then I just pot them up in potting soil. I even use rainwater. But you do have to change out the water.
Give Kim a big thumbs up and click the like!!! I am growing a cinnamon basil this year that I am really enjoying. Thanks for this guide for basil cuttings!
Hi OGNC - glad you enjoyed the video and your basil. I've never tried cinnamon basil - sounds like a winner. Hopefully you can grow some on your windowsill this winter in North Carolina! Thanks for watching!
I had no idea basil could clone without cloning powder. Thanks Soo much for this advice! I watch your videos often and I love the approach you take to inform and entertain your audience. 👍
Super easy, Peter, no cloning powder needed! Try it with mint too, it roots even faster. Rosemary will also root in water, but it takes a little longer. Thanks so much for your feedback, so glad you're enjoying the videos!
Hi my name is Alayna. I am 10 years old. I am home with Covid😢 and bored so I watched your video. I am going into mommy's garden right now to make some basil plants for our kitchen!❤❤❤❤❤
I kept some grocery bought basil in water that I got from the store and i accidentally made it grow roots lol so now I am here to figure out what’s next! Thanks for the helpful video!
I'm thrilled to hear you found the video helpful for starting your basil in water! It's a great way to get them going before transplanting. When you're ready to plant them in pots, remember they love well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight. Enjoy your basil growing journey-it's so rewarding to have fresh herbs at your fingertips! Happy gardening! CK
Thank you so much. I’ve watched endless videos about rooting basil from cuttings. Yours is the only one that specified the sunlight conditions. I’m glad I found you when my cuttings were only sitting in direct sunlight for a couple of hours. 💋
Depending on where you live, let your water stand for 24 hours to allow chylorine to leave the water. I use a bottle of spring water,no chemicals and the bottle is perfect for placing that cutting in.
Hi Lulu, mint is just about the easiest herb in the world to grow and root! Just make sure you grow it in a container, as it is very invasive. You'll save so much money by growing your own basil and mint! Thanks for checking out my store, I have an Herb Seed Collection to get your herb garden started. Take advantage of my weekend sale: 15% off all CaliKim Seed Collections and CaliKim Smart Pots with the code “SEPTEMBER” at calikimgardenandhome.com. Sale expires Monday, September 16th. I just discovered my hobby is gardening and plants in general and this helped me a lot! I didn't know this worked and is that easy. Thank you very much! I''m going to try this right now since I got one buuushyy basil probably just waiting to be propergated :)
I gave our mint plant a huge haircut and thought it wouldnt come back so i put some cuttings in a cup......😆 it no only came back...the cuttings a huge now and the plant is bigger than ever.....MINT FOR YEARS!!! Lol thank you kim!!!
Thank you so much for your video! All the information was super helpful and straight to the point. To add, I'm glad you showed us how to care for basil in the most basic way- without root growing supplements, etc. Again, thank you!!!
I just did this last week...by accident! I took a long stem of my outdoor basil plant and stuck it in a mason jar of water because I was going to cook with it. I left what I didn't use in the water and before I knew it, there were roots forming. I didn't even know basil would do that. Super Excited about it!
Hello Patty - that works too! If you live near a Trader Joes, they have large basil plants for 3 or 4 bucks. Plant it, then take cuttings for future windowsill basil. Can't beat free! Thanks for watching!
Just went outside and cut some basil and mint from my garden and placed them in a jar of water! Thanks for the tip! Been doing this with coleus for years. Never dawned on me to try herbs. Thanks for the tip!
Hello, Ma’am, which direction would be the best facing window? North, East, West or South? I know that South facing windows get most amount of sunlight but I’m not sure if that would be direct sunlight compared to what you said should be “indirect?” Thank you!
Oh Thanks heaps I am going to try this as my husband cooks all the time with Basil & here in Oz it seems to die back quite easily. Cheers Denise - Australia
I find it dies easily in Victoria (Aus). I had a basil plant bought from Coles in early spring and I put it into my hydroponic windowsill planter in the kitchen, added some Seasol and root stimulant to the water and the baby leaves on the bottom died off. I kept the grow light on it and persevered. As soon as the warm weather kicked in the basil took off!
I came across so many videos about propagating basil, mint and rosemary in water easily. However, my herbs has been in water and I have been change the water very a couple days. Not root yet. Leaves looks perky and green. Some herbs’ end turn a bit brown. Would you think of any reason why? What can I do differently next time? Thank you.
Great video👍🏻 my mint is doing wonderfully, but my basil has been in a container of water (water changed out every other day) for two weeks now & still no roots 😢
I've got roots on my basil plant and I'm about to plant them but in the UK it's not very sunny at all so I'm not sure if they will survive or not. Great video
Thank you🙏 I was successful to get a new basil plant Can i use a metal can instead of a glass jar for the rooting step? I have a few small Marvel Insulated Stainless Steel Tumbler that my grandson when he was little that i would like to use. Thank you
You are welcome. Glad to have you watch and comment! Yes you can. Here are a few tips - clean the tumblr really well. Be sure to rinse and wipe out any remaining soap residue, etc. Maintain Hygiene: Keep the tumbler and the water clean to avoid bacterial or fungal growth. Monitor Light and Temperature: Ensure the cuttings get adequate light but avoid direct sunlight that can heat the water too much. What a lovely back story - Please keep me posted, as well. If you have not already, please thumbs up the video and subscribe (I can't tell if you are or are not) - CaliKim
Hi. I put my cutting in water to root. It rooted & I wasn't aware of mistake u mentioned in this video by putting them in a window with direct sunlight. And it withered. I put another one in soil after rooted & all the leaves are gone. So wat did I do wrong?
That’s a great thing that you posted here. I’ve been afraid to have basil ever since a grasshopper laid an egg on mine and their little babies ate my basil all gone in about 1 day. LOL. I think basil is very popular with grasshoppers. Therefore, this video gives me hope that I can keep the basil away from insects. Is it a good idea to wash the basil on the leaves before bringing it indoors and put it in the jar water? Will it hurt it to do so? Thank you so much for the video. This is a good one.
Hello Deanna - oh no! Those grasshoppers are so destructive! Get yourself another basil plant, (if you live near a Trader Joes, they have large basil plants for 3 or 4 bucks). Plant it, then take cuttings for future windowsill basil. I don't wash the cutting before I bring it in, but you might want to inspect it for any insect eggs or creepy crawlies and remove those. Thanks for watching, keep me posted on how your basil cuttings grow!
I watched Kevin from Epic Gardening do this a while ago. I didn't grow basil this year; but, may try it in the future. I have tried rooting tomato suckers using this method and even with changing the water out every other day or so, they just turned to mush. Could it be the water? Maybe I should try again next year with distilled water or some other type of water.
Wow, first timer here.....bought a sweet basil pot, about 3 inches diameter x 4 inches high, and, it has 6 sweet basil shoots. I just took the whole thing out and put it as is in a 6 inches diameter x 8 inches high pot. Is this correct or should I separate the Original 6 shoots in 6 DIFFERENT pots? Help.....cheers from Toronto.....
Thank you for the video, I have a question. Can I combine 2 to 3 rooted stems together when planting them in a pot ?! Do you think that will help the basil to get healthier and stronger?!
I love your garden tips 😊 ugh.. I picked bunch of basil, put em in the water... Their roots were not growing much for almost 2 weeks now. instead, their leaves changed light green. I wasn't sure what I did wrong.. I had no idea what I was doing but I added root enhancer and tiny bit of fertilizer.. Leaves started curling inwards and their color got even lighter 😟 I changed water without any solution in it last night. I feel like they will end up dropping all the leaves soon. it is supposed to be simply and easy and I'm so screwed this up 😬
Happened to me twice and I learned that using non chlorinated water really helps as ever since I switched to rooting in rain water, I've had so much success
My basil cuttings in water wilt and die after 2-3 days.... no roots. What am I doing wrong? No leaves in the water. Close to window :( No direct sunlight.
I did that 30 minutes later the leaves drooped, the roots were well established, so I put it back in the water and now it's fine, what am I doing wrong?
Morning calikim I harvest one squash on Monday and the next day my plant started drooping is she done or can I ad some thing to bring it back I did add some compost. I was wondering should I spray some milk on the leaves. My husband notice red ants on the stem. Is this a problem.
Hello Kim! thanks! my mint keeps dying not sure why? it is the second time I bought a small mint plant and it died off... what could I be doing wrong, with water or sunlight? thank you
Consider using a solution of willow tea. Willow tea is made by soaking willow branches or leaves in water, which releases natural rooting hormones like indolebutyric acid. To make willow tea, simply soak a handful of fresh willow branches or leaves in water for 24-48 hours, then use the resulting liquid to water your basil cuttings. This can help speed up the rooting process and increase the chances of successful propagation. Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching and commenting - CK. You are welcome that is awesome!!! Thank you so much!! and I look forward to more of your comments on videos! And please click on the LIKE button on the videos, as well! CaliKim
Thanks for that info. I'm just a beginner. The basil I grew and enjoyed for awhile was eaten by some insects or slugs or snails. Can you help me with what I can do. I have mint growing too and that is suffering the same fate. I've bought some more basil and will try again. I think I'll try this cuttings in water and see how I get on. I really love basil and I love mint tea. I took lots of cutting off the mint and some of them took off but now I see they are begining to be eaten by some bug
Hello Fionnuala - sometimes gardening can be challenging - sorry about the pests eating your herbs! Fortunately, there is a solution! Watch my video on organic pest control for more details, bit.ly/CaliKimOrganicPestControlVeggieGarden. Appreciate you stopping by!
Hey Kim, PLEASE HELP! I have 10 potted Basil plants and about 4 of them, the main stems look like wood, the leaves are not bright green, tiny leaves and I have been so careful not to overwater, I pull them from direct sun at about 1 PM or so, I don't leave them with "wet feet" at night, what am I not doing? Some were transplants from the local nursery, some I created from cuttings.. It's my favorite herb and I want to do them well. Thank you my friend. PS What time is your live stream today?
Hi Ru, sorry to hear it. Make sure you don't put them in direct sunlight, it's just too much for them. Once roots have grown and they are well established in a pot, put in a sunny window, or harden off, and put in sun outside. Good luck on the second go around! 🍅Please visit my seed and garden shop, calikimgardenandhome.com, for CaliKim Seed Collections, fabric containers and signed copies of my book, Organic Gardening for Everyone: Homegrown Vegetables Made Easy.
