Jim is a total legend and his videos are superb. I couldn’t have done my sash window restoration without his help.

I also pry off the casement hatch cover where the weights hang,use a shop vac and hose to suck up the dust collected at the bottom

One of my favourite things to do, been a long time since I’ve overhauled sliding sash windows. This is the way I was shown how to re-cord (many many moons ago) But I figured out a slightly different way which is handy if your ‘hank’ of sash cord is getting short. Re-cord one side starting from the inner pulley and then straight back up to do the outer pulley, and then cross over and repeat on the other side. Saves a little bit of time too.

Wow, fascinating, thanks for sharing this! I’m trying to re-attach a rope to one window, still not sure how to do that though. But appreciate this video, it did show me how the whole system works, thank you!

Hi Brian, there are many ways to do the same thing, this is just an example of the way I do it. Sometimes I make boiled eggs sometimes I make fried eggs.😋

Hi Jim. Subscribed. Great collection of videos and extremely informative. As I understand there are a couple of different sash rope sizes (diameters) available to use when roping. Can you advise the difference between them please. I have some rather large sash windows requiring re-roping and can only assume the size difference to be based on the window size and weight? Many thanks in advance.

I don't know much about sash windows but i do know using the customers basin as a shelf and tool box is a big no no

Great video . Did my first full window rope today , using loads of Jim’s tips from this video and others. Any tips for making the sashes run a bit easier ? I think due to age of house everything is a bit screw-whiff . I took us much old paint off as I could but still not as smooth as I’d like. Cheers !

Traditionally, rubbing a wax candle along the running surfaces worked. You could try using beeswax spray or silicone spray from time to time after all the painting is done.

Dear Sir, i must say that i am baffled with the crisscrossed of the ropes !!?? why? in order to use 1 weight per side? It doesnt look like the ones we have in america .

All roads lead to Rome! It was taught to me 50 years ago. Once you get the hang of it its a faster method of roping up and minimises wastage. All the methods of doing something will achieve the same result in the end.

Hi, Can you please advise what type of rope you are using? I want to hang some sashes with original victorian cast iron pulleys on the stiles (Im not replacing them with newer brass ones due to the cost), what sort of thickness and type of rope is best for this? Thanks
@jimsear
@jimsear Год назад
Generally, 6mm waxed sash cord will cover most jobs. On very heavy sashes you might want to use 8mm.

@@jimsear Thanks, and what sort of material? polyester, nylon, or would pure cotton braided be ok to ensure it doesn't stretch? which one did you use here?

If people follow this it won't work, because you didn't show the removal of the parting bead.

@@jimsear if you could include some solid examples of how a parting bead can be put in (and out) it would be great. I dont think I've ever renovated a window in which the channel for it actually functions as it should! They certainly never just tap into place and I've always had to drill and nail into place which is not optimum! Also include how to handle the water damage point that always gets the bottom of the parting bead channel!!!

"And that's all there is to roping up." Wait! What? That's NOT all there is. You've now got all this rope going up and down and criss-crossing and you still have to tie on the weights and the sashes. I don't see any advantage to this approach vs. feeding the rope and tying the weight and sash one by one.

Hi Bill, thank you for the comment. I've just realised that I've never done a video of the whole process. I'll correct that in a mini series very soon. The reason I rope up the way I do is because i find it's overall faster, cuts down on wasted motion and is less wasteful when the cord is on a 100m roll. Both ways work, and of course it's down to individual style. Why not make a video and post it up to show another way to do it. I'll happily link to it
