Poinsettias, also known as Christmas Stars or Christmas plants, have become ubiquitous during the holiday season, with their brilliant deep red and green foliage. But most of us end up tossing these plants when they begin to fade once the holidays are over. In reality, these beautiful plants are a type of Euphorbia and can be easily maintained throughout the year and even brought back to their beautiful, colorful glory next winter, with a few simple steps.
Here's what I did to my Poinsettia to prep it for Spring's growing season, and what I will do as the year marches on in order to regain those beautiful, brilliant colors next Christmas.
What are your tips for maintaining a beautiful Poinsettia?

Yes! Its leaves should be fully grown back, but all green. 💚

Thanks for the video. I always keep my poinsettias after the holiday too. The only problem I have is that come Spring, they always get bugs flying around them. Any suggestions or ideas? Thank you.

Depends on the bugs, but a treatment of neem oil might help. If they were fungus gnats, there’s a few things you can do including bottom watering and putting mosquito bits all around the top of the soil. Hope that helps!

@@FreePlantsForever Thank you. I was thinking that it might be the soil. I’ll try repotting my plant in new soil. Hopefully that’ll work 🙂

I saved mine, it was so green in summer and autumn, then I brought it indoors again because of the freezing weather and it started to die(not yet dead but almost...), not sure why because also had some mean soil flies 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. They don’t like cold weather, so it might need to come indoors earlier. The fungus gnats are annoying for sure. Doing only bottom watering can help, as well as putting mosquito bits on the top of the soil. Hope that helps and hope it survives!

I love poinsettias but have cats and have always heard conflicting stories if poisonous or not, so I err on the side of caution and don't buy them... :(

It's true, they are in the Euphorbia family and do have toxicity - how toxic are they? Possibly not too bad, but also probably not worth taking a chance if your kitties like to nibble plants.
