How often should you season a wood humidor? 1-2 times a year. And please don’t use the wipe-down method on a humidor-it doesn’t work. Learn how to season correctly by just using Boveda for Seasoning packs.
(If your Boveda pack is overwrapped, remove that clear plastic before using. DO NOT OPEN the brown packet itself.)

Listen… to say the wipe down doesn’t work is silly. It’s obviously been done for generations before Boveda. Now … is there a better way ? YES !!! But those old methods obviously worked for millions of cigar smokers in decades past. It’s not how I would do it now, because it’s so much easier to put a 84% Boveda in there . I never had mold in any humidor I’ve seasoned in the past, and never had Beatles. Even before Boveda.

I’ve done the “throw the large 84 Boveda seasoning packs in“ - add 2 additional digital Bluetooth hydrometers, 1 for each level and walked away for 6 weeks for a 150 stick Humidor. Added thin sheets of Spanish cedar between Cigar layers. Added cigars a bit at a time and switched to 69s. Never an issue.👍

Good morning, Even though I have 2 electric humidors, I am new to cigars. I first purchased a Needone 300 capacity heating & cooling unit. I went by what most people suggested to do as far as seasoning goes, so I did leave the unit running the entire time. I did use the Boveda packs to season it. I believe I started putting sticks inside at the 1-week time frame. Fast forward another week, and everything seems to be fine. I removed a stick yesterday from the Needone for the first time, I used a Cigar Medics thermometer and it read 67%. So I believe that is a good reading. I also ordered a 840 capacity Newair heating and cooling humidor. personally, I like the features better than the Needone even though the Needone seems to be working just fine. I started seasoning the Newair 2 mornings ago using Boveda packs. I started with 2, size 320, 84% packs and yesterday, I received the 4 pack of the size 60, 84% packs, so I threw them in as well. After watching this video, I unplugged the Newair and will try it the way you recommend. Unfortunately I already ordered over 500 sticks for my Newair humidor, and they will be arriving today, earlier than I expected. So I just ordered several airtight Tupperware containers, so hopefully they will not go bad. I will also use the Boveda packs inside the Tupperware containers. Thanks for your videos, I am learning a lot from them.

Me too. I’ve been using Boveda packs for maintenance, but gonna take these guys’ advice with a grain of salt as it seems they may be employed by the company whose product they recommend so strongly. Also don’t care for the condescension.

I mean Boveda exist from a few years. Wipe down the humidor was The Way since forever, or you put water on it in a bowl if you was scared about wet the wood and you are sorted. Than I use Boveda now especially their travel bag but I understand how people that always wipe or use the bowl are happy with that, Boveda is a clean solution and I’m happy with that but let don’t said that other methods don’t work or are wrong.

@@stefanotattifrongia3612I season with bovedas because I can‘t fail and It’s super easy. Just throw them in and set a notification on your iphone thats it. And if you have a new humidor you might want to return and refund if it leaks too much I would also use boveda since there aren’t any traces from the seasoning process.

I wiped down and it didn’t work I kept losing humidity and had to re wipe about once a week I had no leaks or anything with boveda I have yet to keep seasoning the humidor weekly boveda actually works I’ve had the 84% in for a week so far and RH has been on 70% daily I got 1 more week to introduce my cigars

I think i messed up... I'm half way through seasoning my first humidor and used the wipe down method with distilled water but also used Propylene Glycol with it to prevent mold (I mixed a 50/50 mix). I want to use the Boveda 84% sachet to continue, can this be done or have a I messed it all up now by using the PG? Due to using Propylene Glycol the Boveda 84% will not work correctly in the seasoning process as any humidity over 70% and the Propylene Glycol will take it in won't it? Thanks

Did you know that if you do the wipe-down method to season your humidor, at the most, you’ll provide 2 to 3 grams of moisture to the veneer of your humidor. (Think of it like staining a piece of wood with water.) You’re also introducing 100% moisture to the surface, which can warp the wood. When you use Boveda 84% RH Size 60 for seasoning, each one releases 35 grams of moisture into your humidor. To fully season a 100-count wood humidor, it needs about 100 grams of water. I have an active moisture humidor that has a 1 gallon reservoir. Will the bovida packs help? Its Oak with Spanish Cedar. Its the size of a night stand

We don't recommend mixing two types of humidification, the Boveda will only absorb the humidity from the reservoir. Best to switch 100% Boveda if you're having issues, no mess, no worries, enjoy!

Thanks for the advice! One more question. Yesterday was the 2 week mark for following your directions on how to season my new humidor. I took the 84% 60 gram packs out and put all the cigars in along with new 69% packs (also 60 gram, one for every 25 cigars the humidor can hold). It's been about 24 hours, but the humidity is hovering around 76% in there (I have hygrometers that I calibrated with boveda). How long will it take for it to get down to the 69% which is my ideal? What can I expect on a time frame for coming down from 84%? Thanks again for all the info.

Great question, @traydahlthejugtimeragband5138. No need to be concerned. The Boveda 69% RH are working to bring the humidor and cigars to equilibrium, however, depending on how the cigars were stored and at what RH, it can take time. So wait at least a month. Also, _when_ did you calibrate your hygrometer with Boveda? Even after calibration, hygrometers can have a 3-5%RH accuracy range-adjust (if you can) using the dial on your hygrometer. And then re-calibrate the hygrometer for 24 hours to see if it hits this new reading. In the future, remember to re-calibrate your hygrometers every 3 months for best results. I have a winador running without any power turned on, using 65% packs it holds firm at 69%, i have sealed the drain hole, the packs last indefinitely, question is should I leave it sealed or have some air flow through the drain hole?

So I have a coolidor with 65% packs but the RH always sits around 68% and 68 degrees. Not sure how to get the RH down a bit. With 69% packs it used to sit around 71/72% RH

The Humidr is at 65%RH but the hygrometer is not reading exact. This is very common, as you mentioned with the 69%RH Boveda the hygrometer read 71/72%. Very common for the digital hygrometer to read 3-5 points off, always. It's just what happens with these devices.

You all talked about having a smoking humidor and a cooler humidor for storage that doesn't get opened as often. But I would like to know more about that. If I only have one 3 drawer humidor, is it ok to open it two or three times everyday? How much humidity will get lost when you open it? Is the whole thing pointless if you open it too often? I usually keep around 75 cigars on hand but never know what I will be in the mood for.

Yes to opening your humidor several times a day! How else are you supposed to dip into your cigars? That's the benefit of using Boveda in your humidor. Every time you open your humidor, you're either letting in more humidity or losing humidity. Once you close the drawer, if needed, Boveda starts balancing the humidity back to the ideal RH. Some smokers age cigars or acclimate new cigars in a cooler or Large Boveda Humidor Bag and then move them into their wood humidors. Personal preference. If you're happy with the way your cigars are smoking by keeping them in your humidor, keep doing you. Just make sure to replace your packs every 3 months for optimal cigar protection.

So, if it's 1 60g pack/200 cubic in... and my humidor is 630 cubic in.. would it be recommended to use 3 or 4 packs? Also, is it OK to just toss them on the bottom of the box and stack cigars over/on top of them..or will that cover them up too much not allowing the pack to push moisture around effectively?

Use 4 Boveda Size 60. You can never overhumidify your cigars using more Boveda packs, using that extra one will make all the packs inside your humidor work more efficiently and therefore last longer. (Plus, Boveda comes in convenient 4 packs. Use them all at once.) Good question!

Yes, Scooter. Remove the 84% packs and dispose of them, they aren't reusable. Since you're using 75% RH in a glass-topped humidor, you need 2 packs to maintain the RH in a 50-count humidor. To maximize the efficiency of Boveda 2-way humidity control in your humidor, you should replace the packs every 3 months. Hey, I have a question. I didn't notice and by mistake, my humidor ( small humidor for traveling) went up to 90RH ( with cigars inside). can I insert an 84RH Boveda pack into my humidor with my cigars and after 2 weeks replace it with a 65RH Boveda pack ( I have Cuban cigars) ? will it save my cigars from over humidity?

I too have that very same humidor. I installed the 320 with 72% to upper lid, just as the humi depicted in this video, and I also added a dual 60 cedar holder with two 72% 60s to the bottom of the tray! Consistent 70-73% readings upper tray and lower chamber. Good to go!

I always use a Tupperdor, I recently purchased a Humidor and when I brought it home I closed a dollar bill in the lid and the dollar bill pulled right out with no resistance will that improve after being seasoned will the seal "Tighten up" ?

Thanks for reaching out. Seasoning may help that seal a bit as the wood absorbs moisture over the 14-day seasoning period with Boveda 84% RH packs. Not sure if you're using a Boveda Starter Kit for Humidors. If so, after you're done seasoning, replace the 84% packs with the 72% RH Boveda that come with the kit. After three months if air is still leaking out of through the lid, you might have to switch from 72% RH Boveda refills to 75% RH. Have you recalibrated your hygrometer lately to make sure it's giving you accurate readings? You should recalibrate it every 6 months. I’ve had my 84% in for a week now and my humidor sits at 70%-73% my hygrometer is calibrated I have a front analog and a digital inside they both read the same with the analog off about 2% is it normal to be at 70%-73% in a week ? You guys say it doesn’t matter but that’s what’s confusing, you say it can bring up humidity to what’s on the packs in 20min in a closed environment but yet wait two weeks so the wood soaks up moisture. Aren’t you good to go when the humidor reads 70% to put cigars in no matter how long it takes or is that a false reading ? Is there even a point using a hygrometer with boveda or just trust the wood has what it needs to keep cigars fresh as long as I keep rotating boveda ??

Hi! I used 3 packs of the 84% for two weeks in my 68-count (totally dried out) Adorini humidor. I measured the packs before and after and it shows that my humidor absorbed 37 grams of water. Is that enough or should I season it longer? There's still a lot in the packs (50, 51 and 54g.) Maybe it won't absorb any more because the wood got what it needed in this 14-day timeframe?

@@DBUCK_ I removed them after the 14-days, and put 4 pieces of 60 gram 69% packs in with my cigars. Works totally ok, they maintain the 69%, very stable. I think the wood absorbed enough water and the seal is great because it uses little from the packs. Every month or two I check the packs and the lightest of the 4 (typically 48-54g) I reload.

@@DBUCK_ Put the pack in an airtight container. In the container put a small container and fill it with distilled water (I bought it at a pharmacy) close the lid and wait a week or two. (The warmer the room the less time it takes.) You can measure it before/after. For me it took about two weeks to get 50g to 60g. I know if you soak the packs it's faster but I don't like it, it's too aggressive method for me. :)

Great question. Ambiguous answer. Some say keep the cellophane on when you store cigars in a humidor. Others say remove it because the cellophane is typically used to protect cigars during transport. Therefore, it isn’t necessary to keep the cello on when you’re storing a cigar in a humidor. It’s really personal preference. okay so i know we want to throw out the whole distilled water method and just go with boveda. But scientifically speaking, i just purchased a new 23L/150CT Needone ThermoElectric humidor. I also purchased a 84% seasoning packs. Now my question/theory would be that with your seasoning pack you recommend placing it in the humidor and forgetting about it for a week or two until the humidity gets to where i would like it right around 69Rh then swap out the seasoning pack to the corresponding boveda pack i want to keep it at. Now my theory is that if i wipe the wood down with distilled water and sponge and place a small amount of distilled water in a bowl or on the sponge and place it in the humidor along with your seasoning pack. Shouldnt it make the seasoning time significantly quicker. I mean why wait for the boveda to take 2 weeks when you can help speed the process and the boveda will sort of fix any mistakes if i do wipe it down too much etc.

Why don’t you tell us how many Boveda packs per cubic inch of internal space up to the brim. We can measure our humidors. For example, if my humidor is 12.5” x 8.5” x 3.5”, it is about 372 square inches in volume. How many Boveda packs? Thanks.

I undertand that the fine folks at Boveda have great products. But you cannot say that the distilled water wipe down method definitively "doesnt work". (And they are mocking that method in the video). Ive used that method for probably 15 years without issue. This topic doesnt need a 48 minute video. Dont overcomplicate it, do what works for you. Gotta educate as well as show and tell! Seasoning with Boveda does come down to 1 step. Add the 84% RH seasoning packs into an empty wood humidor, leave them there for 14 days, remove them and throw them away. DONE! Replace with Boveda 72% RH.

The WIPE down method DOES work. My humidor maintains 69-72 % for over 8 months! This guy lies jus to try to sell the Boveda packs. The difference is its a headache wiping it down 3-4x a day for 4 days, thats the difference about wipe down or using boveda. Using boveda does work & its NO HASSLE but the wipe down process DOES work.

Thanks for your comment. It gives us a chance to explain the wipe down method's shortcomings. At the most, you’ll provide two to three grams of moisture to the VENEER of your humidor. (Think of it like staining a piece of wood with water.) You’re also introducing 100% moisture to the surface, which can warp the wood. As you season a wood humidor with Boveda, you’re filling the environment inside the humidor with water vapor. We call that the free water. Boveda scientists found to fully season a 100-count wood humidor, it needs about 100 grams of water. Each Size 60 Boveda 84% RH can release about 35 grams of moisture. We recommend using four seasoning packs for a 100-count humidor and two seasoning packs for a 50-count humidor. In the end, those Boveda 84% RH will have raised the moisture in your humidor to about 65% RH-without disturbing the integrity and the geometry of the wood.

@Bovedainc I was NOT trying to bash boveda bc that's all I use. I'm jus saying the WIPE down process DOES work, it did for me then after I seasoned it I threw boveda packs in it. That's all I was trying to say. No disrespect to Boveda, I jus HATE liars!
