How to Setup and Pour a Concrete Staircase (DIY) 

When I become a home owner and ever needed work I’d want to hire a contractor like yourself honest and does a great job

Anybody can slap down some concrete and create an eyesore but that is a work of art. A proper craftsman there, got the timing spot on knowing when to work it.

Those pre-done trailers I've used many times here in Phoenix growing up working for a contractor most of my younger life, lol. The pre-done trailers here are open top and have a mixer on the axle, so as you drive it mixes, but being an open top, don't slam on your brakes or you will have a cement coated truck, lol. but those trailers are perfect for small 1 yard or so jobs.

5/8/22; 2day: 4 hr, narrow, 3-step job: Yes! Another fine job David..always enjoy your video production style: quick verbal overview then switch to combo of Voice-over+FF & normal speed video while explaining the reasons for design, choice of wood framing...moist Horse hair broom finish...etc. All good info on what/why & how to do this job. Nice job, David! I'm always amazed by concrete work. I poured my own sidewalks, 20x4 feet. The skill is..... impressive. Happy to report, 4 years later, still no cracks on the main run.

Great video, I actually liked that the steps were made of a rougher material, that way if I walked out with my flip-flops on a rainy day I wouldn't end up on my back needing spinal surgery. As far as the tacos go my favorite is tripe and lengua,

Now this is good. One question...how did you figure out the pitch of the stairs? That is, to make sure the stairs are not "flat" so that rain water flows away? I know it's common to use a 1/4" per foot drop. Did you factor that in? Would like to see videos on exactly that...figuring out pitch as it relates to free standing concrete stairs. Thanks Man.

With those grittier mixes, I use a wood float a lot more to bring the cream up. Then when I trowel it, I find if I leave a light sweat finish on the first pass, it seems to have a better finish in succeeding passes.

I love watching your videos. I'm all the way in Chicago and I watch your work to get some understanding of how beautiful concrete work looks and should be done. Your work has become the standard of what I look for and learn from so when I have work done I know what to look for. I wish you were in Chicago - I would sure love to have you do some work for me. May I ask if you don't mind - in your location - what is the price range one should expect to pay for a job like that? I'm sure it might be different here but I'm just trying to get ideas of it all (concrete process, materials, expected time to complete concrete work and pricing as I watch and learn. Thanks again for your very beautiful and informative videos. Also, have you put any videos up on the color of plain concrete - how to know what color (no color added -just plain concrete) it will be once it dries?

Question - Why did you not use Rubble under the major space under the top step/doorway so you wouldn't need so much concrete??? Very nice job.

How is the concrete soft enough to pull the cream out but doesn't slump when you pull the forms? The timing and know how all that works is what I would like to learn.

I always have wondered, how do you know when enough is enough when rubbing on the concrete(or whatever you call it), I see a lot of guys going over the same spot somebody just got done doing. Seems like a good job for somebody with O.C.D. ..lol

Couldn't you just make i from cut Cinderblocks filled with concrete?

I would have threw all my kids toys on the top level.

Seems pretty basic to me... unless that's how they liked it, I would add some patterns or colourful stones or glass to give it that art deco.
