How To Setup Parental Controls On Chrome
In this quick tech how-to video, I’m going to show you a couple of ways to set up parental controls, blocking adult and malicious websites, on the Chrome browser. This will also work if you’re trying to protect a Chromebook as well.
To get started, open Chrome and make sure you’re signed in.
Next, head to google.com/preferences. This will take you straight to the Chrome search settings page.
At the top, you’ll see Safe Search Filters. Check the box in order to enable SafeSearch.
You can click the link, Learn More if you want to read about how Google uses safe search in order to protect your browsing. When you’re done, make sure you scroll to the bottom and hit Save.
Now an important thing here to note is, while Google does its best at filtering adult or malicious sites from the search results, it is not 100%. This is where you can add another layer of protection through Chrome extensions.
Head to chrome.google.com/webstore. In the search bar, type parental controls, and then select extensions underneath that on the left. You’ll see a bunch of results in here, I know a lot of people use one called Blocksi. Scroll down and select it when you see it.
Next on the Blocksi extension page, select add to Chrome. On the pop-up window, select Add extension. It will then add the extension to Google Chrome.
In the next steps, choose continue to go through the setup wizard. First select install as a standalone extension. Choose the Children preset if you’re setting this for your child. On the next screen, set your admin password so that it can’t be disabled. Once you’ve entered it twice, hit verify. You will then be good to go.
If you want to check out the children preset from here, on this page select skip wizard on the top right. Next, enter your password and sign in. You will then see all of the settings here that you can adjust.
To test the parental controls now, head back to Google and do a search. You’ll then see the web blocker has kicked in.
And that’s how you turn on and set up parental controls inside of Google Chrome.
