HOW TO SETUP SHOCK/SPRING COILOVERS

I get this question about 10 times a day, so I figured id show you how I setup separate shock and spring coilovers. This setup is much better than true coilovers on the BMW's as well as some other cars for many reasons.
These are BCRacing-NA.com coilovers on a E46 Bmw 330.
If you would like to order custom coilovers spec'd for your particular car message orderdriftparts@gmail.com.

One of the best tutorial I've seen, great work! 2:28 that is not safe at all, if the lift fails and the lift lock is still opened (since you didn't get it down enough to check) that would be a really bad day. There is another way the rally dudes set it, I can put a link to the YT video if you reply on this, the video is on BC coils for an e46 drift from UK.
@chelseadenofa
@chelseadenofa 4 года назад
You can hear the lift pop as it’s going up. So basically what you’re saying is don’t use any tool that could support the weight of the car under it ever? Trans jack, deadman post, etc? I’m good. Also this isn’t rally, we’re not setting preload and spring height, we are maximizing the cars stroke for balance on asphalt for drifting.
@ichimeduard6188
@ichimeduard6188 4 года назад
No man you got it wrong, I admire and subscribed to what you are doing, you are a pioneer in the industry, I’m not sure if drifting is mature yet as a motor sport. Of course use any tool that was created to do the job, I didn’t hear the lift pop going down, and you went under the car, I’m not absurd or making fun, all I’m saying is to keep safe because we need more people like you, you are inspirational... I would never be able to share this kind of knowledge, I don’t have the opportunity

Thoughts on lowering car by removing preload? Converted my shock/spring setup to true style on my 350z. Though I'm maxed out and still have about an inch and a half gap (265/35's 18x10.5). I dumped it in the past by removing the preload and rode around for a bit without any issues but didn't really like the idea of it.

thanks for the information about how to set the shocks correctly. I will have to see if my ones are set correctly. Could I ask you some other questions about spring rates and rear toe? Currently I have a 7kg spring in the front of my e36, and a 9kg spring in the rear. The front shocks are rather set up stiff, the rear rather loose. I have about 1/4" total toe in in the rear. The car has good grip as far is I can tell, but it likes to straigthen really fast when Im off the gas, slow transitions are rather difficulty to do proper. Are the spring rates front to rear okay? The Car has about 350 bhp. Should I run less rear toe ? What rear toe would you run? The Coilovers are D2 ones. Thank you very much and good luck in FD !!!

@RbNetEngr
@RbNetEngr Год назад
@@DirtyCruze. I saw that. But that is not adjusting the ride height, that is setting the shock length to maximize compression travel. As he said toward the beginning of the video, SPRING LENGTH determines ride height, not shock length. So basically, without the ride height adjuster paired with the spring, the ride height is dictated by the spring length and how much it compresses under the static load of the chassis.

Having changed coilover springs by myself in 15 min an hour. I agree with not putting the load into the shock pickup having adjustable corner weights is imperative. You only need an inch or so to do so. to adjust corner weight. Though coil overs do allow far more ride height adjustment. I see these coilover kits that have front springs 2-300lb too soft and rears 100+ lb too stiff. Running wheelspacers to simply widen the track is plain dumb. It simply softens the spring rate and causes huge guard issues. The only real reason is using wrong offset wheels or slim ones to give calliper clearance etc. They are never ideal at the best. The more scrub radius on the front makes the car bloody dangerous as it tries to take the wheel out of your hands on kerbs and bigger bumps. And overloads axles and bearings on the rear. And at times accentuates rear steer that swing axles have.
@chelseadenofa
@chelseadenofa 4 года назад
Wheel spacers are a tool to reduce side bite on our school cars and make them easier to drive on our track. So we run a 17x8 ET 15 offset after the spacer. Scrub can actually by tuned to help self steering capabilities and low offset front wheels are a necessity for 65 degrees of steering angle.
