How to Sew an Ironing Board Cover

I made an ironing board cover back in 2018 ( • Making an Ironing Boar... ). Not only was it poorly made and didn't fit well, it's also gotten quite dirty.
Well it's time to sew a new cover for my ironing board and I did it by repurposing a thrifted curtain valance. Yes, I just learned what a valance is ...

I'm mainly a quilting sewist so my ironing board is scrap half inch plywood with scrap wool batting and quilting cotton It was a cheap beginner option but I'm salivating over those wool pressing mats. They give everything the besttttt press

I like your ... scrappiness :) However, a wool pressing mat! Thank you for teaching me something. I've never understood why ironing boards are always so long and thin.

Your ironing board cover is beautiful. I need to make one and had bought a heavier cream material. Now I wished I had used a prettier fabric. Thanks for another great video.❤️

Thankyou for the honesty clip at the end. I felt huge shame when I put 6 button holes in a hoop skirt waistband. yes the hoops were in and I thought I was done. But nope, I thought about undoing all my and sewing.... then I just asked my husband to help wrangle it as I sewed. He only made one pirate joke.

What a restrained husband you have. I wouldn't have been able to resist. But also good they helped you with the skirt. None of us are perfect and so it's good to share the less glamorous I say :)

The darts are critical for a nice fitting back around the corners. May I be so bold as to suggest using elastic casing around the edge next time. It helps with where to put the dangling string ends. Nice job, it looks good. A pleasant work space isn't necessary to complete projects, but it definitely helps.
@CorneliusQuiring
@CorneliusQuiring 3 года назад
Be bold! :) I had elastic at the ready and was going to add it into the corners but I found that the draw string was doing all the work I needed them to do. Thank you for the suggestion. As for a pleasant space, it just makes like as a whole great.

Good job on your cover and making use from window coverings. The end of my ironing board holds all kinds of contraptions and I’ve been thinking about making bag that hangs off the end. Happy Sunday from a fellow lover of thrifted curtains for garments.

It sounds like you've got one of them fancy ironing boards then. I'm starting to get the sense you've got a real kitted out sewing room ... and I'm a bit a jealous.

@@CorneliusQuiring no high end board. It came from a thrift store. 😉On the wide end at least 18” is topped with all the crap I use in ironing and construction; pins, tape measure, chalk, markers, etc. This is only possible because I don’t have to collapse to put away. I would love to build a rectangle one like Lindsey @ Inside The Hem did on her channel. Hope your new place is coming along. I’m deciding on bathroom paint colors and bathroom humor art. 😂
@CorneliusQuiring
@CorneliusQuiring 3 года назад
@@k3of5ks Well the space alone to not have put it away is a luxury and I'm happy for you. I hope to one day to have a dedicated studio myself. The place is coming along really well. I did a bit of furniture rearranging yesterday. I'm waiting on photos to come in for frames, but otherwise the place is basically done. Bathroom humour is key!

Very nice! The little tucks give it a form fitting shape, no bunching. A small detail but that is what good couture is all about. This looks trim and lovely. I must change my ugly ironing board covers. Why do they only sell such bland and ugly things? I'm going to paint it a bright color and make a matching fabric cover with thick felt padding below. Thanks!

Love your content Cornelius, I had a question - is it possible to design a trousers/pants that's baggy or almost drop crotch at the top but slim/tapered at the calfs? Idk if it's possible but would love your thoughts
@CorneliusQuiring
@CorneliusQuiring 3 года назад
Anything is possible! :) I would start with a standard pants pattern. Then bring the bottom of the crotch down as far as desired. Next, I would put in extra on the side seams to give them the bagginess. I would of course keep the waist to fitted size. Lastly, I would taper the legs. I would do a sample pair and then adjust and update until I got it how I wanted. I imagine there must also be plenty of tutorials right here on RU-vid. Hope that helps.

Ironing is my least favorite chore. I can spend 30 mins on a garment and it still wrinkled,even using steam or water spray. Is it me or the cheaply made iron? What do you think about spray starch,is it still fabic safe bc I like to keep my clothing for years. Thanks a bunch 💐for the tutorial, it was great.I'd like to make a cover for my mini blouse board.
@CorneliusQuiring
@CorneliusQuiring 2 года назад
I have never actually used a spray starch so I can't speak to it, but I also don't have the fanciest iron and it works great. I like ironing :) I find that for me, the key is to make sure the heat is high enough for whatever fabric I am pressing. Higher heat makes quick work of it. But not too high as to not burn or scorch the fabric. Good luck in your make.
