Just a bit of information; if you guys get contamination in your jars continue to let it colonize get a new grain jar ready and a sterile environment or, a still airbox you're going to want to first take some of the grain that is completely colonized from the grain jar and put it into the new grain jar because this fully colonized piece is fully colonized the possibility of contamination is going to be very very low as mycelium does a pretty good job at taking care of any contamination and it's vicinity

Is it normal for the mycelium to bruise dark blue/almost black after shaking? I was about 25%-30% when I S&B, then around ten minutes later I noticed little specs of blue and black on my rice. I only noticed this after I shook them. I'm just nervous because it looks uncomfortably similar to trich.
@ghz24
@ghz24 3 года назад
Lots of comments on stalling after shaking. There are two reasons this could happen. Contamination that was hidden that was spread by shaking. Or it could be competition between rival substrains. Before the shake there was a war but it was on a single front shaking a multistrain culture makes the war spread to multiple fronts and isolates strains from themselves. A shaken monoculture only finds itself and can reform the mycelium network when it meets itself. Just like putting different strains on the same dish usually causes a line of uncolonized agar to form between the two only in 3 dimensions all through the jar with multiple substrains.

@ghz24
@ghz24 Год назад
@@djsuess2007 What does it smell like, because some bacterial contaminants just make your grain look slimy or even be unnoticeable at first till it starts getting a grip on the grain. Carefully try and see if it smells sour thats a dead give away for bacterial contaminanation. Don't stick your nose to close or down in the jar, gently waive your hand over it to blow a little out to sniff. Also don't sniff obviously moldy jars.

@PhillyGoldenTeacher
@PhillyGoldenTeacher 3 года назад
when you shake you're breaking apart mycelium structure, it will take time to rebuild itself. whereas a jar that hasn't been shaken, already has the myc network established. but typically shaking will allow the myc to spread out much quicker than letting it colonize from one corner of the jar to the other.

@thorjor1
@thorjor1 3 года назад
Liberty caps are VERY difficult to grow indoors for a variety of reasons. They are cold loving at the tops, warm loving at the bottoms, do not enjoy fruiting light sources, and need a ton of fresh air exchange when they fruit. They also love manure and LIVE grass substrate. They are very symbiotic with their host environment, which is super difficult to replicate indoors. I live in Oregon, so I'd rather just pick them in season, as they grow everywhere, if you know what environments to look in.

Nipha Ahtlantashah all that nonsense about smaller jars colonizing faster is bullshit, I myself have tested it and there’s a plethora of forms on shroomery debunking it. A single quart of rye colonizes as the same as two pints. Colonization speed is mostly dependent on inoculation points, and nutrients. Quart jars are always the way to go, like the other guy said, your just opening yourself up to twice as many chances for contams.

Liquid Culture is a liquid based inoculation device that somehow (i forget the exact process) uses live fruit/myc to inoculate. Spore syringes are self explanatory, they are syringes of spores, which is completely different to a liquid culture. They both have benefits and cons ofc. Shroomery is a good place to look up if your interested in growing your own mushrooms :)

just did uncle ebens and come here for your next level. GRAIN. it seems to me that if you are shaking all this grain around against the lid that you are bringing that food source in contact with your air ports if modified lid and against the rim if unmodified and that increases likelihood of contamination? ye? no? thank you sir
